Note 9 - ELECTROMAGNETISM With LAB
Uses of Electromagnets:
1. Doorbells
2. Sorting materials for recycling
3. Moving containers on the port
4. Loudspeakers
5. Magnetic relay (an electromagnetic switch found in vehicles)
6. Fire alarms
Uses of Magnets
Magnets have many uses at home. They are used for holding objects, in electrical
appliances with motors, in loudspeakers and electric doorbells.
Magnets are used in industries to record information in audio and videotapes, to
separate iron and steel from other materials, to lift heavy objects made of iron and steel,
to remove splinters from a patient’s eye and in Maglev trains.

Title : Constructing a simple electromagnet
Aim: To construct a simple electromagnet.
Apparatus: battery, electrical wire, iron/steel nail, paper clip, masking tape
Diagram:
Method: 1. Wrap the wire tightly and neatly around the nail.
2. Tape the two ends of the wire to the top and bottom of the battery using the masking tape.
3. Place the nail near to the paperclip (made of steel) while pressing the top and bottom of the
battery and record the observations.
4. Remove the tape and wire from one end of the battery and observe what happens.
5. Record all observations made.
