Task 1: Graduate careers, professional skills, and you

(LO1, LO4: 1000 words)
In this task, you will research and discuss a potential future career pathway that your degree
programme could open up for you. You will explain your interest behind your choice of degree
programme and career and will explore the key professional skills that you will need to acquire
during your degree, and then use on the job.

This task is a reflective piece of writing, and you are required to respond to the four subheadings
below.

1. Career Research
Using the prospects.ac.uk website, research and describe in your own words a
graduate-level career pathway that is of interest to you. Explain what the career
pathway involves, including roles and responsibilities, and how your chosen industry
promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace. You should include
references to some of the concepts and theories found in iLearn lessons 5 and 7.

2. Career Motivation
Explain your interest in this career. What attracts you to this role? Consider and discuss
the potential long-term implications of your career choice. This may include job
stability, work-life balance, and the potential for personal and professional growth. You
should include references to some of the concepts and theories found in iLearn lesson 3

3. Degree Choice
How does your degree programme relate to your career choice? Is your current degree
programme the best option – or is there a degree that is a better fit? You should review
iLearn lesson 2 when writing this section.

4. Professional and Digital Skills

Graduate-level jobs require a wide range of professional and digital skills. Discuss what
you think appear to be the two most important professional skills, and one digital skill
needed for the role you have discussed in this task. In Task 2, you will be required to
evaluate the same three skills.

Example 1

2
Upon researching through prospects.ac.uk, I have delved into the realm of data
analytics as a graduate-level career pathway that significantly intrigues me. Data
analytics involves the collection, interpretation, and utilisation of vast sets of data to
derive valuable insights for decision-making processes within various industries. In
this role, professionals are tasked with responsibilities such as data collection,
analysis, visualization, and interpretation, contributing to informed business
strategies and initiatives. The data analytics industry promotes Equality, Diversity,
and Inclusion (EDI), by fostering environments where diverse perspectives are
welcomed and valued. This is crucial as it enhances innovation, problem-solving,
and overall organisational performance.

My interest in pursuing a career in data analytics stems from its dynamic nature and
its pivotal role in shaping decision-making processes across industries. The potential
for continuous learning and growth in this field is particularly appealing to me.
Moreover, the long-term implications of a career in data analytics include promising
job stability due to the increasing demand for data-driven insights in today's digital
age. While the field may pose challenges in achieving a perfect work-life balance
due to the nature of handling complex data sets and projects, the potential for
personal and professional growth is immense. As discussed in iLearn Lesson 3,
theories such as Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs emphasize the importance of self-
actualization, which aligns with the opportunities for growth and fulfilment that a
career in data analytics offers.

My current degree program in Computer Science closely aligns with my career

choice in data analytics. The foundational knowledge and technical skills acquired
through my degree program provide a solid framework for understanding data
structures, algorithms, and programming languages essential for data analysis tasks.
While other degrees such as Statistics or Data Science might offer more specialized
coursework directly related to data analytics, I believe that my degree in Computer
Science equips me with a versatile skill set applicable across various industries and
roles within the realm of data analytics, making it a suitable choice for my career
aspirations.

Two crucial professional skills essential for a career in data analytics include critical
thinking and effective communication skills. Critical thinking enables professionals to

3
effectively analyse complex datasets, identify patterns, and derive actionable
insights, while strong communication skills facilitate the effective articulation and
presentation of findings to stakeholders. I need to also have digital proficiency in all
areas, as the role is technology heavy.

Example 2

1. Career Research:

I looked up a job on prospects.ac.uk, and I found something about data analytics.

It's about analysing data or something. I guess they use it to make decisions in
companies. I think they might promote equality and diversity, but I'm not sure how.
Maybe they have policies or something.

2. Career Motivation:

I picked data analytics because it sounded cool. I like working with computers, and I
think it's a job that pays well. I don't really know about the long-term stuff. Maybe I'll
get bored, who knows?

3. Degree Choice:

I'm studying Computer Science because it's kind of related to data analytics, I guess.
Maybe there's a better degree out there, but I don't really care. I just want to get a
degree and get a job.

4. Professional and Digital Skills:

I think you need to be good at computer stuff for data analytics. And maybe you
need to talk to people sometimes. I don't know about digital skills, but I can use
Facebook and stuff, so I guess that's something.

Read the module criteria:

 Using the criteria, identify which level the example is
 What areas of strength does this example have?
 What feedback for improvement would you give this example?
 Now use the rest of the criteria in your assessment located under ‘My
Assessment’ tab on iLearn to assess this example response
