ES 228 – Mechanics of Deformable Bodies

Quiz #1 Simple Stresses

Name: ___________________________ Course, Yr., & Sec.: ____________ Date: September 10, 2024 Score: ___________

Problem Solving: Solve the following problems below. Show your solution. (20 points each)
1. Two Solid cylindrical rods AB and BC are welded together at B and loaded as
shown in Fig. P-1. Knowing that d1=50 mm and d2 = 30 mm, find average
normal stress at the midsection of (a) rod AB, (b) rod BC.
2. Two steel plates are to be held together by means of 16-mm diameter high
strength steel bolts fitting snugly inside cylindrical brass spacers as shown
in Fig. P-2. Knowing that the average normal stress must not exceed 200
MPa in the bolts and 130 MPa in the spacers, determine the outer diameter
of the spacers that yields the most economical and safe design.

3. A circular punch 20 mm in diameter is used to punch a hole through a steel

plate 10 mm thick. If the force necessary to drive the punch through the
metal is 250 kN, determine the maximum shearing stress developed in the
material.
4. A pipe carrying steam at 3.5 MPa has an outside diameter of 450 mm and a wall thickness of 10 mm. A
gasket is inserted between the flange at one end of the pipe and a flat plate used to cap the end. How many
40-mm-diameter bolts must be used to hold the cap on if the allowable stress in the bolts is 80 MPa, of
which 55 MPa is the initial stress? What circumferential stress is developed in the pipe? Why is it necessary
to tighten the bolt initially, and what will happen if the steam pressure should cause the stress in the bolts
to be twice the value of the initial stress?
5. The homogeneous bar ABCD shown in Fig. P-5 is
supported by a cable that runs from A to B
around the smooth peg at E, a vertical cable at C,
and a smooth inclined surface at D. Determine
the mass of the heaviest bar that can be
supported if the stress in each cable is limited to
100 MPa. The area of the cable AB is 250
mm2 and that of the cable at C is 300 mm2.
