Preliminary Part
Question Analysis: By analyzing 50 Questions taken by BIBM, we found that there are 73 different questions
that have appeared from this chapter.
Exams Bangladesh Bank Govt. Banks Private Banks
No. of Problems 17 13 43

Number System:
Question Concepts: Observing the question patterns of previous years and some reputed websites we have seen
that there are 8 types of problems that are frequently asked in the examination. The types are:-
Types Description
1. Odd-Even This is the most common type of question that comes in the exams, especially in the
determination preliminary examination. To understand this type of question, an examinee must
understand the underlying concepts of number, integer and types of integer.
2. Divisibility Divisibility of different numbers.
3. Prime number From prime number, we have seen different problems: identifying the prime, concept of
multiple and divisor of prime number, sum and product of a prime number etc. The
questions are not very frequent from this topic but the problems are tricky.
4. No. of Trailing There are exactly two ways that you may find this kind of problem in your exam: in
zeroes exponential multiplication format or factorial of a number.
5. No. of Divisors The number of factors or divisors of a number will be asked to find out. There is a
particular method of solving this kind of problem.
6. Unit Digit The problems are of 2 types: very large scale multiplication and high level of exponent.
7. Formation of Mostly the difference between a number and the number obtained by reversing the digits
number are asked. But sometimes you may also expect to get to make a number with 3 digits in
the preliminary exam.
8. The Division The questions that generally come from this topic are from the relationship between
Rule divisor, dividend, quotient and remainder. Sometimes questions from successive division
may also appear in your exam. This questions are usually a bit tricky in nature.
Topic-Wise Detail Explanation:
1. Odd-Even Type
For this topic you will need the understanding of the Classification of Number.
Number
(Number is an entity that helps in 3 functions: Calculation, Ordering and Comparisons)
The numbers are broadly classified in two categories

Real Number Imaginary Number

(They can be found on the number line) (They cannot be found on
Real number can be classified by three different considerations the number line)

Sign of the number Size of the Number Ratio ability of the number
According to the sign of the number According to the size of the number Classified in 2 ways
there are 3 types of numbers there are 2 types of numbers

positive negative Non-negative Integer Fraction Rational Irrational

(The concept and definition will be discussed in the class)
There is a conceptual difference between three numbers: Integer, Whole Number and Natural Number.
Integer All the non-fraction both positive, negative and non-negative. (-∞ to +∞)
Whole Number Only the non-negative and positive integers. (0 to +∞)
Natural Number Only the positive integers. (1 to +∞)

Types of Integer: As we already know, there are two types of integers: Odd Number and Even Number.
Even Number Odd Number
Even number is a kind of number which is divisible Odd number is a kind of number which is not
by 2. divisible by 2.
As the number is divisible by 2, so any even number As the number is not divisible by 2, so the odd
can be written as 2a; where a is an integer. number can be written as 2a+1 or 2a-1.

Interaction between odd and even number: There can be two types of interactions between odd and even
numbers: Addition and Multiplication.
Addition Multiplication
1. Odd + Odd= Even 1. Odd × Odd = Odd
2. Even + Even= Even 2. Even × Even = Even
3. Odd+ Even= Odd 3. Even × Odd = Even

(Any integer exponent on odd number results to odd number and any integer exponent on even number results
to even number)

2. Divisibility
Divisibility Rule: To understand the divisibility rule better, we will group the concerned numbers in 6 different
groups.

Group-1: 2, 4, 8
Divisibility rule of 2 If the number is even, then it will be divisible by 2.
Divisibility rule of 4 If the last 2 digits of a number is divisible by 4, then the number will be divisible by 4.
Divisibility rule of 8 If the last 3 digits of a number is divisible by 8, then the number will be divisible by 8.

Group-2: 3, 9
Divisibility rule of 3 If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 3, then the number is also divisible
by 3.
Divisibility rule of 9 If the sum of the digits of a number is divisible by 9, then the number is also divisible
by 9.

Group-3: 5, 10
Divisibility rule of 5 If the unit digit of a number is 0 or 5, then the number is divisible by 5.
Divisibility rule of 10 If the unit digit of a number is 0, then the number is divisible by 10.

Group-4: 11
Divisibility rule of 11 If the difference between the sum of even placed digits of a number and odd placed
digits of a number is 0 or multiple of 11, then the number is also divisible by 11.

(Prepared by- Ashim Ananda)

Signature July Batch
(Self-Study Material and Assignment-1)
Group-5: 7, 13, 17, 19

A= The whole number without the unit digit; B= The unit Digit of the number.
Divisibility rule of 7 If A-2B = 0/multiple of 7 then the number is divisible by 7.
Divisibility rule of 13 If A+4B = multiple of 13 then the number is divisible by 13.
Divisibility rule of 17 If A-5B = 0/multiple of 17 then the number is divisible by 17.
Divisibility rule of 19 If A+2B = multiple of 19 then the number is divisible by 19.

Group-6: 6
Divisibility rule of 6 If any number is divisible by both 2 and 3, then the number is also divisible by 6.

The divisibility rule of 6 is also considered to be the universal divisibility rule. The reason that any number which
is divisible by 2 and 3 is also divisible by 6 is that 2 and 3 are the co-prime factors of 6. (2 and 3 are co-prime
and their product is 6)

This rule can be used on other numbers as well:

Divisibility rule of 12 12 = 4 × 3; as 4 and 3 are co-prime so, if any number is divisible by both 3 and 4 then
the number is also divisible by 12.
Divisibility rule of 18 18 = 9 × 2; as 9 and 2 are co-prime so, if any number is divisible by both 9 and 2 then
the number is also divisible by 18.
Divisibility rule of 21 21 = 7 × 3; as 7 and 3 are co-prime so, if any number is divisible by both 7 and 3 then
the number is also divisible by 21.
Divisibility rule of 24 24 = 8 × 3; as 8 and 3 are co-prime so, if any number is divisible by both 8 and 3 then
the number is also divisible by 24.

Similarly, 28= 4 × 7; 36= 4 × 9 etc.

3. Prime Number
Definition: If a number has only two divisors; 1 and the number itself, then the number is called Prime Number.
The smallest prime is 2 and 2 is also the only even prime number.

Prime Number Detection: To detect a prime number, there are some steps.
1. First locate the nearest square number. (Suppose, you are supposed to check whether 147 is a prime or not.
So you will locate the nearest square number to 147, which is 144)
2. Then find out the square root of the nearest square number. (the square root of 144 is 12)
3. Now, find out the prime numbers that are between 1 and the square root. (The prime numbers between 1
and 12 are 2, 3, 5, 7,11)
4. Check the divisibility of the number against the primes. (Check whether 147 is divisible by 2, 3, 5, 7 and 11)
Result: If any prime number can divide the number you are checking, then the number is not a prime. If no
prime can divide the number, then the number is a prime. (For example: 147 is divisible by 7. So 147 is not a
prime)

Along with the idea of prime, you must also understand the idea of Co-prime number. Now, co-primes are a
pair of number whose common divisor is 1 only. You need to understand it very clearly: to become a co-prime
pair, the numbers need not to be primes. Two non-prime numbers can also be co-prime if their common divisor
is 1 only.
Example: 16 and 25 are co-prime. But the numbers are not prime.

4. No. of Trailing Zeroes

Definition: The zeroes at the end of a number is called the trailing zero.

The trailing zeroes are the result of multiplication of 10. The no. of trailing zeroes are exactly equal to the
number of 10 multiplied. That is why, if you are asked to find out the number of trailing zeroes, then your
primary strategy should be to find out how many 10 can be formed with the given expression.

Now, to produce 10 you will need 5 and 2 (10= 5 × 2). That is why, in the solving process, you will need to find
out the number of 5 and number of 2. And, then whichever number is less will be the number of 10 produced.
And that will be your answer. (More explanation in the class)

If you are asked to find out the number of zeroes in N! (Factorial of N) then the formula is:
𝑵 𝑵 𝑵
No. of zero= + 𝟓𝟐 + 𝟓𝟑 + …….. (It will be continued until the denominator is less than the numerator)
𝟓

5. No. of Divisors
To find out the no. of divisors, you will need to do prime factorization of that number. Now, prime factorization
means to find out the prime divisors of that number.
Suppose, N= 𝑎𝑝 × 𝑏 𝑞 × 𝑐 𝑟 ×………..; Where a, b, c, ….. are prime numbers and p, q, r, ….. are integers then
The no. of divisors= (p+1)(q+1)(r+1)……..
The number of odd divisors= (q+1)(r+1)…….; if b, c,…. is odd prime and a is even prime.
The number of even divisors= Total no. of divisors – no. of odd divisors

6. Unit Digit
Type-1: Large Scale Multiplication- If you get a question to find out the unit digit of a large scale multiplication,
then multiply the unit digits of all the numbers and find out the unit digit of the product of the unit digits of the
number. That will be the answer.
For example- 2234597 × 1335749 × 33556873 = N; then the unit digit of N will be the unit digit of the product
of the unit digits i.e. (7 × 9 × 3) which is 9. So, the unit digit of the product will be 9.
Type-2: Large Exponent- To find out the unit digit of large exponent, we need to know the cyclic pattern of
exponent for different numbers.
2 The unit digit of 24𝑛 =6, 24𝑛+1=2, 24𝑛+2=4, 24𝑛+3 =8. (n≠0)
3 The unit digit of 34𝑛 =1, 34𝑛+1=3, 34𝑛+2=9, 34𝑛+3 =7. (Here, n can be 0)
4 The unit digit of 4𝑜𝑑𝑑 =4, 4𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 = 6 Exponent ≠ 0
5 The unit digit of any exponent on 5 is 5.
6 The unit digit of any exponent on 6 is 6.
7 The unit digit of 74𝑛 =1, 74𝑛+1=7, 74𝑛+2=9, 74𝑛+3 =3. (Here, n can be 0)
9 The unit digit of 9𝑜𝑑𝑑 =9, 9𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑛 = 1. Exponent ≠ 0

7. Formation of Number (Discussed in Written part)

8. The Division Rule

Its discussed in the written section elaborately. But, there are a few types of problems in preliminary part as well.
𝑹𝒆𝒎𝒂𝒊𝒏𝒅𝒆𝒓
Type-1: If the division result has a decimal part, then the decimal part = 𝑫𝒊𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒓

(Prepared by- Ashim Ananda)

Signature July Batch
(Self-Study Material and Assignment-1)
Type-2: If a number is divided by 5, then the remainder is= the unit digit of the number; if the unit digit is less
than 5. And if the unit digit of the number is greater than 5, then the remainder will be unit digit-5

LCM and HCF:

To understand the meaning of LCM and HCF, we need to understand the concept of Multiple and Factor first.
Multiple: The multiples of a number are the numbers who can be divided by the number. Example: The
multiples of 3 are the numbers that can be divided by 3 like 3, 6, 9, 12, 15 etc.
Factor: The factors of a number are the numbers that can divide the number. Example: The factors of 24 are
the numbers that can divide 24 like 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12 and 24.
LCM: Least Common Multiple
The meaning of LCM of a, b and c is that the LCM is the minimum number that can be divided by a, b and c.
HCF: Highest Common Factor
The meaning of HCF of a, b and c is that the HCF is the maximum number that can divide a, b and c all.
The relation between the LCM and HCF of two numbers:
The product of the numbers = The product of the LCM and HCF of the numbers
#The LCM of two Co-prime numbers = Product of the numbers
#The HCF of two Co-prime numbers = 1
(The technique of finding LCM and HCF of two or more numbers will be discussed in the class)
LCM and HCF of Fractions:
𝑳𝑪𝑴 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔
LCM of the Fraction = 𝑯𝑪𝑭 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔

𝑯𝑪𝑭 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑵𝒖𝒎𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔

HCF of the Fraction = 𝑳𝑪𝑴 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒏𝒐𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒔

Some Tricky Types of problems from LCM and HCF:

1. The minimum number that leaves the same remainder while dividing by some numbers and the remainder
amount is given.
2. The minimum number that leaves the same remainder while dividing by some numbers and the remainder
amount is not given.

Written Part
Number System:
This topic is not as important for written exam as it is for the preliminary test. Though we are not seeing
problems from this chapter frequently in the written exams recent years, but still there are a few types of
problems that have been set in the written exams.
So, before starting the chapter, first we will see the question pattern from this chapter in different exams.
BIBM Question Analysis: This chapter is not given very importance in the written exams taken by BIBM. We
have seen that out of the 50 written exams taken by BIBM from 2001 to 2023, only 3 questions were set from
this chapter.
Bangladesh Bank; Assistant Director (2015): 2 Problems
Union Bank PLC; MTO (2014): 1 Problem

Overall Question Analysis: The overall question analysis for the chapter ‘Number System’ is given below:

Types of the Questions: Analyzing the question pattern we get a few types of problems from this chapter that
are frequently seen in the written exams. The types are-
Type-1: Formation of Number/Place value of digits type
This is the most common type of problems that frequently appears in the written problem from Number
System. To solve these problems you will need the idea of the place value of the digit of a number.
For example, if the unit digit of a number is ‘x’ and tenth digit is ‘y’, then the number can be written as
10y+x. Now, if the digits are reversed, then the number will be written as 10x+y.
You must also remember that, if a number with 3 digits are reversed, then the unit digit takes the place
of the tens digit, the tens digit takes the place of the hundreds digit and hundreds digit takes the place of the unit
digit. That means, all the digit have to change its position.
Finally, the difference between a number and the number obtained by reversing its digit is equal to nine
times the difference between the digits of the number.
▲N=9(Difference between the digits of the number)

Type-2: The Sum of the numbers related problems

This type of problems are also very commonly seen in the written part. To solve these problems you
may need the conceptual understanding of arithmetic and geometric series. The formulas that you may need
often are given below:
(Prepared by- Ashim Ananda)
Signature July Batch
(Self-Study Material and Assignment-1)

1. The n term of arithmetic series: a+(n-1)d; a= first term, d= common difference, n= no. of terms
th

𝑛
The sum of n terms= 2 {2a+(n-1)d}
2. The n term of geometric series:
th
arn-1; a= first term, r= common ratio, n= no. of terms
𝑎(𝑟 𝑛 −1) 𝑎(1−𝑟 𝑛 )
The sum of n terms= or when r>1 or r<1
𝑟−1 1−𝑟
𝑛(𝑛+1)
3. Sum of first n natural numbers= 2
𝑛(𝑛+1)(2𝑛+1)
4. Sum of the squares of the first n natural numbers= 6
𝑛(𝑛+1)
5. Sum of the cubes of the first n natural numbers={ 2 } 2
6. If some numbers are in arithmetic progression, then their average is situated at the median point.

Type-3: Divisor and Remainder Type

This type is not very frequent but the problems of these type is usually very tricky in nature. To solve
these kind of problems, usually you will need the understanding of one formula:
Dividend= Divisor × Quotient + Remainder
Sometimes you may also need the understanding of Successive Division. It means continuous division
but each time the quotient from the previous division is divided.
Suppose, N is divided with r producing quotient a. Then in the next step, a will be divided by r, producing
the quotient b. Then b will be divided and so on.
Type-4: Prime Number Type
This type is not very frequent but the problems of these type is usually very tricky in nature. The general
information that you need to know that, a prime is a number that has exactly two factors; 1 and the number
itself. The smallest prime is 2 and it is the only even prime number.
LCM-HCF
This type of problems are not very important for written test. We have seen that usually the relation between
the numbers and their LCM and HCF is the dominant type of math.
