THREE SISTER SHIPS
Olympic, Titanic and Gigantic. This last one was transformed into a hospital ship, changing its name to Britannic after Titanic sinking.
R.M.S. Titanic
Titanic was the largest, fastest and most luxurious ship in the world. Although it was advertised as an unsinkable ship, it sank in just 3 hours during its
first journey on April 15th, 1912.
Construction
Ship Details
Weight: 46,000 tons + · Length: 269 m · Height: 53 m · Width: 28 m · Motor Power: 55,000 horsepowers · Maximum Speed: 22.5 knots (42 km/h)
Ship Structure
Of its 16 watertight compartments, only 4 could keep the ship afloat. Unfortunately, one more was damaged and flooded, allowing the ship to sink.
Inside, the best parts were the common spaces, especially the famous first-class Grand Staircase with a spectacular glass dome at the top. Titanic was
considered a floating luxury hotel to travel on.
Journey
On April 10th, 1912 Titanic left Southampton (England) course to NYC, stopping at Cherbourg (France) and Queenstown (Ireland) to pick up some
passengers. Captain Smith took a route further south than usual to avoid icebergs.
Sinking
On April 14th at 11:40 pm, Titanic hit an iceberg, sinking about 3 hours later. Sinking Time: 02:20 am · Casualties: 1,500 +
Murdoch (First Officer) was warned of an iceberg’s precence, leading him to make the worst decision: trying to avoid the iceberg and stopping the
engines. This caused the ice to hit the hull, letting the water to enter the ship and quickly flooding the safety compartments. At 00:26 on April 15th,
Carpathia received the CDQ Titanic call. Being at 58 miles (93 km) away, it changed course and headed towards its position at its maximum speed. It
took almost 4 hours to reach the wreck, being 04:00 am when Carpathia sighted the first lifeboat.
Famous
They are some of Titanic most important passengers:
Empty Lifeboats
The first lifeboats launched into the sea on both sides of the boat since 00:40, 1 hour after crashing (numbers 7, 5, 3, 1, 8, 6), were practically empty of
passengers, carrying only 28 out of 65, 35 out of 70, 32, 12 out of 40, 28 and 24 people respectively. The evacuation was very slow at first; but starting at
01:15 am, it accelerated. In addition, steerage passengers, who were the majority on the ship, began to pour onto the boat deck in large numbers.
At 00:45, Stone (Californian Second Officer) reported seeing white fireworks and woke Lord (Californian Captain) up to tell him, but he didn’t give it
much importance. At 02:00 am on April 15th, Titanic disappeared. At 04:00 am, Stewart (Californian Chief Officer) relieved the guard and at 04:30 am,
he saw green luminous fireworks about 19 miles away and recognized Carpathia, the steamship that was arriving in the area to rescue survivors. At
05:30 am, Lord woke Evans up and he contacted the ship to inquire about the reason for the fireworks. Then he learnt that Titanic had sunk, so he
headed towards its last reported position.
Californian arrived at 08:30 am, when Carpathia was already leaving with the 706 rescued passengers and recommended them to sweep the area in
search of more survivors. The crawl was brief; they only found floating debris and the small folding lifeboats. Californian continued on her way to the
USA, and soon the crew testified in the Senate regarding the investigation of the tragedy. Prosecutor blamed Lord for not responding to the white lights
(emergency) and not approaching Titanic. Lord earned a very bad reputation for negligence of omission.
