ASSIGNMENT # 3
(Due October 3, 2024)
1. For an isotropic elastic medium defined by the relation σij = λδij εkk + 2µεij ,
express the strain energy density U in terms of (a) the components of εij , (b) the
components of σij , and (c) the invariants of εij . Also, in the case (a), express U
as the sum of a dilatational energy density and a distortional energy density, while
using the engineering elastic constants K and G.
1 2(λ+µ) ν λ
2. Show for an isotropic elastic medium that (a) 1+ν = 3λ+2µ , (b) 1+ν = λ+2µ ,
2µν 3Kν
(c) 1−2ν = 1+ν , and (d) 2µ(1 + ν) = 3K(1 − 2ν).
3. For the standard linear solid model shown in Fig. 1 and the stress history shown
in Fig. 2, determine the strain γ(t) during the intervals, (a) 0 ≤ t/τ ≤ 2, and
(b) 0 ≤ t/τ ≤ 4 (superposition may be used).
4. For the viscoelastic model shown in Fig. 3, determine (a) the constitutive equation,
(b) the relaxation function G(t), and (c) the stress T (t) for 0 ≤ t ≤ t1 , when the
strain history is given by the graph in Fig. 4.
5. With reference to the π-plane shown in Fig. 5, (a) find the principal stress values
for the points B and C shown on the plane, and (b) show on the plane a line
corresponding to σ1 = σ2 and also a region corresponding to σ1 > σ2 > 0 > σ3 .
7. For the case of plastic plane strain with ε33 = 0, dε33 = 0, and σ22 = 0, show that
the Levy-Mises equations lead to the conclusion that the Tresca and Mises yield
conditions (when related to the pure shear yield stress k) are identical.
