Practical
English
Usage
Michael Swan

Special features of this book include:

• simple and practical presentation
• alphabetical arrangement of numbered entries
• detailed index and cross-reference system
• distinction between formal and informal usage

Practical English Usage is a major new reference guide

for intermediate and advanced students of English (of
all nationalities) and their teachers. It contains short
clear articles on all the grammatical problems which
regularly cause difficulty to foreign learners. In addition
it deals with selected points of vocabulary, idiom, style,
pronunciation and spelling. The main differences
between British and American usage are also dealt
with. Each entry contains an explanation of a problem,
examples of correct usage, and - when this is useful
- examples of typical mistakes.

Listening

Charles <;.YVhitle\
LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING O U T focuses o n spontane-
ous spoken American English with the aim of bridging the gap
between "classroom" English and the English that students
are likely to encounter on their own.
With LISTENING IN AND SPEAKING OUT, students are
given the opportunity to LISTEN IN o n recorded conversa-
tions among "real" people; p e o p l e who hesitate, j o k e , argue,
interrupt and even make natural grammatical errors.
The Workbook contains 12 units, each based on two record-
ings: the Monolog which consists of a short anecdote, and the
Discussion which presents an unscripted conversation among
four native speakers. A wide variety of activities based on the
recordings help build students 1 confidence and motivation to
SPEAK OIT in English.

SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND SECOND LANGUAGE

LEARNING STEPHEN D KRASHEN
This book presents the first comprehensive theory of adult second language
acquisition, Stephen D Krashen's 'Monitor Theory'. Based on the important
acquisition-learning distinction, which Earl Stevick has described as "potentially
the most fruitful concept for language teachers that has come out of the
linguistic sciences during my professional lifetime.. . ".Krashen's theory
provides new insight into all areas of second language research and practice.
Topics covered include the acquisition of grammatical structures, the role of
affective variables, aptitude, individual variation, age differences and, most
important, teaching methodology.

PSYCHOLOGY AND THE LANGUAGE LEARNING PROCESS

A A LEONTIEV
Professor Leontiev has written this immensely practical guide for the classroom
teacher which is of equal value to the applied linguist. In these articles on the
psychology of speech and communication Professor Leontiev analyses the
contributions to the language learning process of memory, emotion, thought
and will. He also considers such factors as the age and personality of the learner
and the use of intensive methods, and studies the role of visual perception.

CONTRASTIVE LINGUISTICS AND THE LANGUAGE TEACHER

JACEK FISIAK
This book provides a fascinating overview of the relationship of contrastive
analysis to current attitudes and theoretical positions and draws together
informed opinion from a wide spectrum of teachers and researchers. The first
part considers the implications of contrastive analysis for classroom teaching.
The second part is concerned with contrastive analysis in relation to
psycholinguistics, error analysis, communicative competence and
sociolinguistics.

TEACHING ENGLISH AS AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE

PETER STREVENS
This is a stimulating collection of articles on developments in language learning
and language teaching, English as an international language and ESP.
Peter Strevens, founder of the Bell Educational Trust, provides many fresh
insights into the theory and practice of English language teaching, drawing on
his extensive experience in many countries. This observation of contemporary
trends in the use of and teaching of English is not only of assistance to the
classroom teacher, but also to teacher trainers, students of linguistics and
educationists worldwide.

Modular language learning
CEEL GENEVA

WHAT IS MODULAR LEARNING1"? • Learning organized

round small modules, each leading up to a functional objective.
• Each student has his own learning material - knows what to
do, how to do it, and has a system of self-evaluation. • Modu-
lar language learning is made for students working in pairs,
since language communication needs a minimum of two
people, within a larger, though not necessarily balanced,
group. • Modular learning is true student oriented learning,
to the point where the teacher can leave the students entirely
on their own indefinitely. The teacher's role, therefore, is
one of counsellor and motivator, but not of number one per-
former. • Modular learning is, by definition, success oriented
learning.

The CEEL, Centre for the Experimentation and Evaluation

of Language Learning Techniques, in Geneva, has now made
modular courses in British English {Threshold British),
American English {Threshold American), Spanish {Umbral),
Italian {Dunque), German {Deutsch durch Lemziele), French
{Le francais par objectifs), and further courses are in prepara-
tion in Greek, Russian and Finnish. The first 240 hours of
the English course take a beginner to the level of the First
Certificate. Two forms of the course exist: • for use with a
teacher-animator • for self-teach.

programmes for teachers, can be obtained from: CEEL, Palais Wilson,

ELT GUIDES
Teaching Aids devised by the English Language
Teaching Institute of the British Council
Using their experience in practical classroom teaching during
intensive full-time language courses for overseas students visiting
Britain, staff from the ELTI have written a series of booklets
summarizing recent work in materials design and teaching
techniques. These are intended as discussion documents for
workshops or seminars, or as a stimulus for the individual teacher
interested in new directions in the teaching of English as a foreign
Language (EFL).

1. Communication Games —
by Donn Byrne and Shelagh Rixon
Deals with the principles behind making classroom activities truly
communicative — and how these principles can be applied when
designing games to suit particular students. 32 communication games
are described and instructions on how to make each game are given.
The booklet is illustrated with photographs and drawings of actual
materials, and there is also a select bibliography and list of
manufacturers and publishers' addresses. The booklet complements
the ELTI film "Communication Games in a Language Programme".
Order No 8455 02 4 £5.25

2. Simulations —
by David Herbert and Gill Sturtridge
Has an introduction on the value of simulation in language teaching,
on stages in the design and production of a simulation, and
suggestions as to how stages in a simulation might be sequenced in
class. Materials for four different simulations are given in full, with
suggestions for adaptation and variation. There is also a bibliography
and a list of published material.
Order No. 8465 02 4 £5.25

3. Oral Practice in the Language laboratory —

by J Y Kerr
Deals with techniques of design and use of dialogues and drills for
controlled oral practice based on language laboratory work. Different
types of drills are described and exemplified and there is a section
illustrating complete teaching units consisting of introductory
dialogues and drills, usually linked by a story-line or common theme.
Two cassette recordings of all the teaching materials accompany the
booklet.
