Time Control: Each game will have a time control of 10 minutes per player, with a 2-second increment per move.
Chess Clock: Players must use a chess clock for all games. If a clock is unavailable, a new game cannot be started until one is provided.
Touch-Move Rule: If a player touches a piece, they must move it if legally possible. If a player touches an opponent’s piece, they must
capture it if legally possible.
a. Adjustment: If a player wishes to adjust a piece without the intent to move it, they must first announce “j’adoube” (French for “I
adjust”) or “I adjust.” Failure to do so may result in the requirement to move the piece.
Draw Rules: Draws can be agreed upon by both players. If no agreement is reached and a draw is claimed, it must be confirmed by the
tournament director.
5. Scoring
Win: 1 point
Draw: 0.5 points
Loss: 0 points
Bye: If a player is assigned a bye, they will receive 0.5 points for that round.
6. Tie-Breakers
In the event of a tie in scores, the following tie-breakers will be used, in order:
Sportsmanship: All players are expected to display good sportsmanship and respect towards their opponents, organizers, and officials.
Disputes: Any disputes should be reported to the tournament director immediately. Their decision will be final.
Appeals: Players may appeal decisions to the tournament committee, whose decision will be final.
8. Miscellaneous
Forfeits: A player who does not appear for their game within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time will forfeit the game.
Withdrawals: Players who withdraw from the tournament should notify the tournament director as soon as possible.
Registration: Players must register before the start of the tournament and confirm their participation in each round.
9. Additional Rules
The tournament director reserves the right to adjust rules or procedures as necessary for the smooth running of the tournament.
Any changes or updates to the rules will be communicated to all participants promptly.
Phones must be turned off or silenced during play. Penalties apply for disruptions.
Participants should wear their Departmental Intramurals Uniform or Team shirts.
ID badges or School ID should be attached to a lanyard or clip that makes them easy to see and access. Pins or adhesive badges should
be avoided to prevent damage to clothing. (Compliance with uniform and ID guidelines is mandatory. Failure to adhere to these guidelines
may result in penalties)
