EXPERIMENT NO.

05

It is required to design a screw jack for supporting the machine parts during their
repair and maintenance on the shop floor. It should be a general purpose jack
with a load carrying capacity of 100kN and maximum lifting height of 500mm.

Given:- W = 100kN = 100 x 103N, H= 500mm,

Assume:- μ = μc = 0.14, Pb = 20N/mm2, σc = 50N/mm2

i) Consider screw under pure compression to find diameter of screw-

σc =

50 =

dc = 50.46mm = 51mm

For core diameter dc = 51mm, pitch p = 8mm

Outside diameter do = dc + p = 51 + 8 = 59mm

Mean diameter dm = do – = 59 – = 55mm

ii) Torque required to overcome the friction (T1)

Helix angle, tanα =

α = 3.310

Friction angle, tanΦ = μ

Φ = tan-1 μ = tan-1 (0.14) = 8.850

T1 = W x tan(Φ + α) x
= 100 x 103 x tan (8.55 + 3.31) x 27.5

= 518.32 x 103N-mm

iii) Torque required to overcome collar friction (Tc)

Assuming uniform wear theory

Tc = μc WR
Where R = mean radius of collar = 0.6 x do = 0.6 x 59 = 35.6 or 36mm

Tc = 0.14 x 100 x 103 x 36 = 504 x 103N-mm

Total torque

Tt = T1 + Tc = 518.32 x 103 + 504 x 103 = 1022.32 x 103N-mm

5.0 Questions for confirmation of learning

1. Give two reasons why we select square thread profile for screw jack.

Ans- a) It has maximum efficiency.

b) Minimum radial or bursting pressure on nut.

2. Write down four applications of power screw.

Ans:- a) Screw jacks: to lift weight

b) Lead screw of lathe: for axial movement of tool and its precise
positioning.
c) Tensile testing machine: to exert large force.
d) Vice: to clamp the work piece.

6.0 Conclusion
1. The screw is subjected to Torsional, Bending and Compressive Force
