TEXTBOOK/SMARTBOOK/CONNECT:

EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS/TEXTBOOK/SMARTBOOK/CONNECT:

We will use Understanding Business, 13th edition with Connect, by

William Nickels, James McHugh, and Susan McHugh. In addition, we will be
completing online assignments using McGraw-Hill's Connect, which is a web-
based homework/learning management system. You have 14 days of free
access from the start of this semester, Tuesday, June 18th.

Package (Full Text Paperback/Connect with SmartBook):

Text: Nickels | Understanding Business 13th ed.

ISBN: 9781264858118

Connect Access Card / LL Bundle

ASSESSMENT METHODS AND EVALUATION:

The following outlines how grades will be calculated. Effort level, attendance,
and participation will help you at the margin.

 35% of final grade = Exams

 30% of final grade = Discussion Boards

 20% of final grade = Assignments

 15% of final grade = Quizzes

Final grades will be calculated by the total points earned by the

student in each category divided by the total points possible for
each category and then multiplied by the category's percentage.
Afterward, the points for each category will be added together, and
the total will be based on a 100% scale.

The "Discussion Threads" review a specific theme, reading, or incident

provided by the instructor via canvas. "Connect," "Quizzes," "Exams,"
"Assignments," and "Discussion Threads" will have specific "opening" and
"closing" dates. Late "Discussion Threads" original messages and responses
will receive a grade of zero. Completing online assignments and
participating in them are required for this course. Please be aware
that this is a fast-paced and interactive course. Students must
complete all coursework, or a grade of zero will be assigned for any
work not submitted.

Grade Scale:

A = 90 - 100

B = 80 – 89

C = 70 – 79

D = 60 – 69

F = Below 60

COURSE ORGANIZATION:

Each student is expected to have access to a computer and a stable internet

connection. Additional software, such as Adobe Acrobat and Power Point (a
PowerPoint reader is available for free from Microsoft) are also required.
In general, we will devote one week to two or three chapters. Each Chapter
has a reading assignment (please see course schedule). Additional materials
are provided within the course's Canvas page. These materials generally
include the following:

 Presentations per Chapter

 Discussion Board questions

 Video Assignments per Chapter

 Smartbook and Quiz per Chapter

Each student's study habits may differ, so consider which course resources
and study habits best fit your skills and preferences. More than studying the
slides is required. I strongly recommend reading each Chapter before starting
the modules. The book is a tremendous resource. Additionally, multiple
resources are provided within Connect. This allows students to be somewhat
selective in using one type of resource or another. The following five-step
study plan works rather well for most students, especially if they can do
these steps promptly:

1. Read the assigned Chapter. Take notes while reading.

2. Complete the Smartbook assignment.

3. Most units have a discussion board assignment. Complete this

Assignment by the due date. The discussion board facilitates class
participation, engages students in question-answer interaction
between students and the instructor, and helps foster an improved
learning environment, especially as students share professional
experiences and relate them to the course topics.

4. Complete the weekly Assignment (You will find the weekly assignments
in Canvas Modules by clicking the chapters assigned for that week.

5. Complete the chapter video and case assignments.

Final advice regarding weekly units: Pay attention to your preferred

learning style. Most students at this level perform best when they
learn by doing homework (including discussion boards, Smartbook,
and video assignments). Reading and studying are very important.
Ultimately, the exams will ask you to demonstrate your
understanding by asking you to answer questions about the
course's concepts, definitions, theories, and other items from
course discussions. I strongly encourage you to do all assignments
as soon as possible and not wait until the day of the due date. Most
students benefit from choosing specific days of the week and times
to complete this course's assignments.

CONNECT SMARTBOOK

Your book has software that can be bought with the textbook or separately.
The Smartbook should be completed after reading the Chapter. There is a
flashcard program that will help you learn the terms in the Chapter. If you
miss a word, the word will be added back to the card deck, and you will get
to try again. When you complete the assignments clearly and demonstrate
conceptual and practical understanding by using examples where
appropriate and your own work experience when applicable, you will earn
between 50% and 100% based on your thought-out response. There will be
a due date for each Chapter. Late "discussion threads" will receive a
grade of -0-.

CONNECT ASSIGNMENTS:

After reading the Chapter, view and complete the Connect assignments for
each Chapter. There will be a due date for each Chapter. You will have three
attempts per Assignment. Late assignments will be graded, and 10
points will be deducted from your original score. For example, if
your original score is 70, your submitted grade is 60.

EXAMS:

There will be exams during the semester (including the final exam). Students
must complete all coursework or will be assigned a grade of "0" for anything
missing.

FINAL EXAM:

There will be a required Final Exam for this course. If a student does not
complete the Final Exam in the designated time frame, a grade of "0" will be
assigned. Students must complete all graded coursework or earn a grade of
"0" for anything missing.

assignment completion (every week, every module). After two (2) absences
or weekly incomplete assignments, a student is encouraged to contact the

is interested in supporting your academic success.

may affect your grade and are the student's responsibility.

STANDARDS OF CLASSROOM CONDUCT: Valencia College is dedicated to

advancing knowledge and learning and developing responsible personal and
social conduct. By enrolling at Valencia College, a student is responsible for
becoming familiar with and abiding by the general rules of conduct listed in
6Hx28: 8-03 and the Student Handbook. Even though the faculty manages
the classroom environment, the primary responsibility for maintaining a
respectful and civil learning environment rests with the students. Students
who violate the Student Code of Conduct may be referred to the Dean of
Student's Office for disciplinary action, which may result in a sanction up to
and including expulsion.
