SOLVING LINEAR EQUATIONS
Recall that whatever operation is performed on one side of the equation must also be performed on the other.
Remember that when an equation involves fractions you can multiply both sides of the equation by the least
common denominator and proceed as usual.

C. Consecutive Integer word problems
What Are Consecutive Integers?
● Consecutive integers are integers that follow in sequence, each number being 1 more than the
previous number, represented by x, x + 1, x + 2, x + 3, …, where x is any integer.
For example: 23, 24, 25, …
● If we start with an even number and each number in the sequence is 2 more than the previous
number then we will get consecutive even integers; represented by x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6, …, where
x is any even integer.
For example: 16,18, 20, …
● If we start with an odd number and each number in the sequence is 2 more than the previous
number then we will get consecutive odd integers, represented by x, x + 2, x + 4, x + 6, …, where
x is any odd integer
For example: 33, 35, 37, …
x + (x + 2) = 60
2x + 2 = 60
2x = 6 - 2
2x = 58
/2 /2
x = 29
29, 30, 31
3) The sum of three consecutive even integers is 528; find the integers.
4) The lengths of the sides of a triangle are consecutive odd numbers. What is the length of the
longest side if the perimeter is 45?
5) John has a board that is 5 feet long. He plans to use it to make 4 shelves whose lengths are to be
a series of consecutive even numbers. How long should each shelf be in inches?

NUMBER PROBLEMS:
1. When 4 times a number is increased by 40, the answer is the same as when 100 is decreased
by the number. Find the number.
2. When 7 times a number is decreased by 8, the answer is the same as when 3 times the number
is increased by 4. Find the number.
