Japan
In Japan, gifts are an important part of our society. You should give a
gift when a coworker returns from vacation, when they get a
promotion, and on other special occasions. If the gift is wrapped,
don’t open it in front of the person who gave it to you.
Wait and open the gift later.

USA
It is common for a coworker to get small gifts on their birthday,
if they are retiring, or for other important life events, like getting
married or having a baby. It’s important to check the policy of your
workplace. Some big companies have policies against gift giving in
the workplace.

MALAYSIA
Gifts are not common in the workplace. In some cases, gifts are
exchanged if there is a personal relationship between the people.
Gifts are sometimes considered a bribe. Never give money as a gift.

ENGLAND
It is not common for coworkers to exchange gifts. During the
Christmas season, it is more common to send holiday cards. If you
go to visit a coworker’s home or a friend’s home, it’s important to
bring a small gift, like a bottle of wine or some chocolate.

8 READING
Read the travel advice. A

What is Your Travel Advice?

If you can’t afford a big, fancy hotel, you should stay at hostels! It’s cheaper than
staying at a hotel, and it’s a great way to meet new people. You can sleep in a
dorm with other people, or you can pay a little more and have a private room.
Some hostels have kitchens. You should cook at the hostel to save more money.
Some hostels are really fun! They have bars, and you can party all night.

If you travel to another country, you should learn about their customs and
traditions. It’s important to learn a few common expressions and words in the
local language. You shouldn’t expect that everyone will always speak English!
You can use a translator, but people are usually very happy when you can say
“hello” or “thank you” in their language.

Traveling internationally requires a lot of preparation. You should have all

necessary documents prepared before you travel. These documents can
include passports and visas. If you don’t have a valid passport, you can’t
travel! You should have a photocopy of your passport with you at all times.
You should reserve all hotels, airfare, and tours in advance. Sometimes you
can’t book a hotel without a credit card, so you should have a credit card, too.

Who gave the advice? Write the person’s name: Danitza, Adrian, or Jennifer.
Then check ( ) the advice that you agree with. B

WHAT DID YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT OAXACA?

We loved the food! We loved the different flavors! We ate lots of mole. It’s a savory
dish made with chocolate and lots of different spices. We also ate lots of cheese.
Have you seen this cheese before? It's very unique to Oaxaca. We found a really
great restaurant in the Benito Juarez Market. We ate there four times! We also ate
chapulines, which are grasshoppers! And we did a mezcal tasting. Mezcal is an
alcohol similar to tequila. It was pretty strong.

WHAT ELSE DID YOU DO?

We explored the beautiful architecture of Oaxaca city, like the Santo Domingo
church, and we did a walking tour and saw lots of cool street art. We visited
some archaeological sites, like Monte Alban. Our guide told us all about the
Zapotec culture. The Zapotec culture has been in the Oaxaca area for more
than 2,500 years! Many people still speak the Zapotec language. We also visited
some local artists who make alebrijes, sculptures of fantastical creatures. For
example, we saw a donkey with wings and a bunny with antlers. We didn’t have
time to take a Temazcal ( a big sauna ) but it looked like a special experience.
SO, DO YOU RECOMMEND OAXACA FOR OTHER COUPLES ON THEIR HONEYMOON?
Yes! Oaxaca is the perfect destination for an adventurous couple!
