workforce, politics, and society as a whole. Women have been able to achieve greater education and employment
opportunities, and they have broken through barriers that previously held them back. Women now hold leadership
positions in various industries, including technology, finance, and healthcare. Additionally, women have become more
involved in politics and have taken on more significant roles in government. Furthermore, there has been a shift towards
greater gender equality, and women's rights have been at the forefront of many social justice movements. While there is
still work to be done to achieve full equality, it is clear that the role of women has evolved and continues to do so.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: What are the advantages and disadvantages of
having the Internet? (Approximately 120 words)
The Internet has become an essential part of our daily lives, providing us with access to vast amounts of information
and connecting us to people from all over the world. One of the most significant advantages of the Internet is that it
allows us to access information quickly and easily, making it an invaluable tool for research and learning. It also provides
us with opportunities for communication and social networking, allowing us to connect with friends and family
regardless of distance. However, the Internet also has its drawbacks. It can be a source of misinformation and fake news,
and it has the potential to be addictive, leading to a decrease in face-to-face social interaction. Moreover, privacy
concerns are a significant issue, as our personal information can be easily accessed by cybercriminals. While the Internet
provides us with many benefits, it is essential to use it responsibly and be aware of its potential drawbacks.

(Approximately 120 words)
For me, perfect holidays are about relaxation, adventure, and spending quality time with loved ones. I like to explore
new places and try new activities, such as hiking, swimming, and trying new foods. However, I also enjoy taking some
time to relax and unwind, whether it's reading a book on the beach or simply enjoying the scenery. Being able to
disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and recharge my batteries is also essential for me. Spending time with
family and friends is also an essential part of a perfect holiday, creating memories and bonding over shared experiences.
Ultimately, a perfect holiday for me is about balance, where I can enjoy new experiences, relax, and connect with those
closest to me.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: If you didn’t have to do any homework, what
would you do instead? (Approximately 120 words)
If I didn't have to do any homework, I would spend more time pursuing my hobbies and interests. I love reading, so I
would spend more time devouring books from my reading list. I also enjoy writing, so I would work on my creative
writing projects or start a new blog. Additionally, I love spending time outdoors, so I would make an effort to go for
more hikes, explore new trails, and spend time in nature. Another thing I would do is spend more time with friends and
family, catching up with them and making new memories. I would also make an effort to learn new skills or take up a
new hobby, such as photography or painting. Without homework, I would have more time to invest in myself and the
things that make me happy.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS: What things do you do that are good for your
health? And things that are bad? (Approximately 120 words)
There are several things I do that are good for my health, and others that are not so good. To begin with, I try to maintain
a healthy diet, focusing on whole foods and limiting processed foods and sugar. I also exercise regularly, whether it's
through a gym workout, yoga, or outdoor activities. Additionally, I prioritize getting enough sleep, as it's essential for
physical and mental well-being. On the other hand, there are things I do that are not so good for my health, such as
consuming too much caffeine, which can disrupt sleep and cause anxiety. I also tend to spend too much time sitting at a
desk, which can lead to poor posture and muscle stiffness. Finally, I sometimes struggle with stress management, which
can affect my mental and physical health. Overall, I try to prioritize healthy habits while also being mindful of areas
where I can improve.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: What is the funniest thing that ever happened to
you? (Approximately 120 words)
One of the funniest things that ever happened to me was when I accidentally wore mismatched shoes to school. I was
in a rush that morning and grabbed two similar-looking but different shoes without realizing it. When I got to school,
my friends noticed my shoes right away and burst out laughing. At first, I was mortified and wanted to hide, but I soon
realized how silly the situation was and started laughing too. Throughout the day, every time I saw someone, they would
point at my shoes and laugh, and I couldn't help but laugh along with them. It was a funny and memorable experience
that reminded me not to take myself too seriously and to find humor in the unexpected.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS: Would you agree to not using your mobile
phone for a whole day every week? Why/ Why not? (Approximately 120 words)
In my opinion, agreeing to not using a mobile phone for a whole day every week can have several benefits. It can help
us disconnect from the constant stream of notifications and distractions that come with mobile phone use and allow us
to be more present in the moment. It can also encourage us to engage in other activities, such as spending time with
friends and family or pursuing hobbies, that we might otherwise overlook if we were constantly checking our phones.
However, it may also be challenging for some people who rely on their phones for work or communication. Ultimately,
I think it's a personal decision and depends on individual needs and circumstances.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Why is racism so difficult to eradicate?
(Approximately 120 words)
Racism is a complex and deeply ingrained problem that has persisted throughout history and continues to impact
societies today. One reason why it is so difficult to eradicate is that it is often perpetuated through systemic and
institutionalized practices that can be difficult to dismantle. Racism is also fueled by prejudice, stereotypes, and
ignorance, which can be challenging to overcome through education and awareness campaigns alone. Additionally,
racism can be deeply ingrained in individuals and communities, often passed down from generation to generation. To
combat racism effectively, it requires a concerted effort from individuals, institutions, and governments to promote
diversity, equity, and inclusion. This includes challenging discriminatory policies and practices, promoting dialogue and
understanding between different communities, and actively working to dismantle the structural barriers that perpetuate
inequality. Ultimately, eradicating racism requires a sustained commitment from all members of society to work towards
a more just and equitable future.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Is the future promising for women in our western
society? (Approximately 120 words)
In many ways, the future looks promising for women in Western society. In recent decades, there have been significant
strides towards gender equality, with more women occupying positions of power and influence in politics, business, and
other fields. The #MeToo movement has also shed light on the pervasive problem of sexual harassment and assault,
leading to greater awareness and accountability. However, there is still much work to be done to address the gender pay
gap, ensure access to affordable childcare, and combat discrimination and bias against women. Furthermore, women of
color and those from marginalized communities continue to face unique challenges and barriers that must be addressed.
Ultimately, the future for women in Western society depends on continued efforts to promote gender equality and
dismantle the structural barriers that perpetuate inequality. By working towards a more inclusive and equitable society,
we can create a brighter future for all.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS: Why is advertising necessary? Do you think
there are too many ads on TV, Internet, etc.? (Approximately 120 words)
Advertising plays a crucial role in promoting products, services, and ideas to potential consumers. It helps businesses
and organizations to reach a wider audience, build brand recognition, and drive sales. Moreover, advertising can also
play an important role in shaping public opinion and influencing social change. However, the sheer volume of
advertising in today's society can often be overwhelming and intrusive. With the rise of digital media, ads are now
present on virtually every platform, from TV and radio to social media and search engines. While some level of
advertising is necessary for businesses and organizations to succeed, it is important to strike a balance between
promoting products and respecting the privacy and attention of consumers. By promoting responsible advertising
practices and empowering consumers to make informed choices, we can ensure that advertising serves its intended
purpose without becoming an undue burden on society.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THESE QUESTIONS: Do you sometimes read your horoscope?
Why/ Why not? (Approximately 120 words)
I don’t usually read my horoscope. However, many people do read their horoscopes on a daily or weekly basis. Some
people believe that horoscopes provide insights into their personality traits, future events, and relationships. Others view
horoscopes as a form of entertainment or a fun way to start the day. However, it is important to remember that horoscopes
are not based on scientific evidence and should not be used to make important life decisions. Moreover, horoscopes can
sometimes perpetuate harmful stereotypes and biases. Ultimately, whether or not to read horoscopes is a matter of
personal preference. As with any form of media or entertainment, it is important to approach horoscopes with a critical
and discerning eye, and to use them as a source of amusement rather than a guide to life.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: What is the strangest thing that ever happened
to you? (Approximately 120 words)
Waking up in a parallel universe where everything is different or being the sole survivor of a plane crash in a remote
location. Other strange scenarios could include encountering a time traveler or being abducted by aliens. While these
events are highly unlikely to happen, they can spark the imagination and remind us of the infinite possibilities that exist
in the universe. Ultimately, what one person considers the strangest thing that could ever happen may differ from
another's perception, as our experiences and beliefs shape our perspectives.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Do you eat healthily? (Approximately 120 words)
As a teenage girl and a vegetarian, eating healthily is very important to me. Being a vegetarian means that I have to pay
extra attention to what I eat to make sure I am getting all the necessary nutrients. I try to eat a variety of fruits, vegetables,
whole grains, and legumes to ensure that I am getting enough protein, iron, and other essential vitamins and minerals. I
also make sure to incorporate healthy fats into my diet, such as avocados, nuts, and seeds.
However, like everyone else, I do have my weaknesses. I sometimes find myself craving junk food, such as chips and
candy, but I try to limit my consumption of these foods. I also enjoy cooking and experimenting with new vegetarian
recipes, which helps me stay motivated to eat healthily.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Can violence ever be a solution to a problem?
(Approximately 120 words)
Violence is never an acceptable solution to a problem. It is a primitive and destructive way of solving conflicts that only
leads to more suffering and pain. Violence only perpetuates a cycle of revenge, and it does not solve the root of the
problem. There are always alternative ways of dealing with issues and conflicts that do not involve hurting others. These
include communication, negotiation, and seeking professional help. Violence can also have serious consequences, both
for the perpetrator and the victim, including legal consequences, physical and emotional harm, and a long-lasting impact
on mental health. It is crucial to remember that resorting to violence is not a solution but a problem in itself. Instead, we
should strive to promote non-violent approaches to conflict resolution and seek to build a more peaceful and just society.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: What can be done to make a better world for
women? (Approximately 120 words)
Women around the world face different types of discrimination, harassment, and violence just because of their gender.
The first step to making a better world for women is to acknowledge these issues and work towards solutions. One
approach could be through education and awareness campaigns that promote gender equality and empower women.
Governments and organizations can also implement policies and laws that protect women's rights, provide access to
healthcare, education, and employment opportunities, and ensure equal pay for equal work. It is also essential to
challenge and change the patriarchal societal norms and attitudes that perpetuate gender inequality. Men and boys can
play a crucial role in this by becoming allies in the fight for women's rights and challenging toxic masculinity. In short,
creating a better world for women requires a collective effort from everyone, and it starts with recognizing and
addressing the issues that women face.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Are there bad pets or are there bad pet owners?
(Approximately 120 words)
There are many debates about whether there are bad pets or bad pet owners. In my opinion, the responsibility for a pet's
behavior lies primarily with its owner. It is the owner's duty to properly train, care for and provide for their pet's needs.
However, there are some animals that are more prone to aggressive behavior due to their breed, history of abuse, or
other factors beyond their owner's control.
Furthermore, it is important to note that pet ownership is a big responsibility and not everyone is cut out for it. People
who lack the time, resources, or patience to properly care for a pet can inadvertently cause their pets to develop negative
behaviors.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Is the place where you live friendly to visitors?
What would you do to attract more visitors? (Approximately 120 words)
Spain is known worldwide for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and friendly people. As a resident of Spain, I can
attest to the fact that Spain is indeed very welcoming to visitors. The people are warm and hospitable, and the country's
tourism industry is one of the biggest in the world.
To attract more visitors, the government should continue investing in infrastructure, maintaining historic sites and
monuments, and promoting lesser-known regions of the country. Additionally, Spain should work towards becoming
more accessible to tourists with disabilities and making their visit more eco-friendly.
Local businesses and communities can also do their part in attracting visitors by providing authentic experiences, such
as food and wine tastings, cultural events, and opportunities to learn about local traditions and customs. In this way,
visitors can experience the true essence of Spain and its people.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: What other things make it difficult to live with
other members of the family, apart from alcohol? (Approximately 120 words)
Living with family members can be a wonderful experience, but it can also come with its own set of challenges. Apart
from alcohol abuse, there are several other things that can make it difficult to live with other family members. One of
the most common issues is lack of communication and misunderstandings. It can be challenging to express one's
thoughts and feelings effectively, leading to conflicts and tension. Additionally, differences in lifestyles, habits, and
personalities can also cause problems. For instance, some family members might prefer a tidy and organized space,
while others might not be as concerned about cleanliness. Similarly, different schedules and routines can also make it
hard to find time to spend together. To overcome these challenges, it is essential to practice effective communication,
respect each other's differences, and be open to compromise and understanding.
WRITE A COMPOSITION ANSWERING THIS QUESTION: Imagine you are Dr. Wise. Write a letter in
answer to “Desperate’s” one advising him what he should do. Begin with “Dear Desperate,” (Approximately 120
words)
Dear Desperate,
Thank you for reaching out to me. I understand how difficult it can be to deal with stress and overwhelming situations.
Based on your description, it sounds like you are facing a lot of challenges and feeling lost.
The first step I recommend is to seek support from friends, family, or a professional counselor. Talking to someone about
your struggles can be very helpful and provide you with a fresh perspective. Additionally, finding healthy ways to
manage stress, such as exercise or meditation, can improve your mental health and overall well-being.
It's also important to remember that you are not alone in your struggles. Many people face difficult times and there is
no shame in seeking help. Take things one day at a time and try to focus on the things you can control.
I hope this advice is helpful to you. Remember that there is always hope for a brighter future and that seeking support
is a sign of strength, not weakness.
Sincerely,
Dr. Wise
In which part of life is it more important to be competitive, in a) studies, b) sports or c) business? Why is it
especially important in that area? (Approximately 120 words)
Being competitive can be important in various aspects of life, but in my opinion, it is especially important in the business
world. In the competitive world of business, the success of a company often depends on being able to stay ahead of the
competition. Companies need to be innovative, strategic, and constantly seeking ways to improve in order to succeed.
This requires a competitive mindset and a drive to succeed.
While being competitive can also be important in studies and sports, the consequences of losing are generally less severe.
In business, losing can mean going bankrupt or losing your job. The stakes are much higher, and as such, being
competitive is even more important. Additionally, the skills developed through competition in business, such as strategic
thinking, problem-solving, and teamwork, can be applied to other areas of life and can lead to personal and professional
success.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of social networks? (Approximately 120 words)
Social networks have become a significant part of modern life, and their popularity continues to grow. One of the biggest
advantages of social networks is that they allow people to connect with others from all around the world, regardless of
geographic barriers. This can be beneficial for networking, sharing information and ideas, and maintaining relationships
with friends and family.
However, social networks can also have several disadvantages. One of the main concerns is the risk of addiction, which
can lead to a decrease in productivity and impact mental health negatively. Additionally, social networks are vulnerable
to fake news, cyberbullying, and other forms of online harassment, which can cause emotional distress and even harm
reputations.
Overall, social networks offer many benefits, but it is essential to use them responsibly and understand the risks involved.

Dear Maria,
I hope this letter finds you well. I have some exciting news to share with you! I received an electric scooter for my
birthday! I’ve been wanting one for a while now and I’m so grateful to finally have one.
I took it for a test drive and it’s so much fun to ride! It’s also very eco-friendly and I’m looking forward to using it
instead of my car for short trips. I’m planning on taking it to the park this weekend to ride around and enjoy the beautiful
weather.
I can’t wait for you to try it out as well! We can go for a ride together and explore our town in a new way. Let me know
when you’re free and we’ll plan a day for our adventure.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Best regards,
Iria.
What changes would you like to make in your life? (Approximately 120 words)
As a teenage girl, stress over school can be overwhelming, and it's important to make changes to manage it. Firstly, I
would like to establish a more structured routine that includes scheduled time for studying, exercise, and relaxation.
This will help me feel more in control and reduce feelings of anxiety. Secondly, I would like to find a support system,
such as talking to a trusted friend or family member or seeking help from a counselor or therapist. Thirdly, I would like
to take breaks when needed and engage in activities that bring me joy and help me unwind, such as listening to music,
reading a book, or practicing mindfulness. Finally, I would like to learn to prioritize my tasks and set realistic goals to
avoid feeling overwhelmed. By making these changes, I hope to manage stress better and feel more confident and in
control.
Write a letter to a friend who is feeling stressed because of an exam telling them what they can do to try to relax.
Begin with “Dear ….” (Approximately 120 words)
Dear Sonia,
I heard you are feeling stressed about the upcoming exam, and I wanted to reach out and offer some tips to help you
relax. Here are a few things you can do:

to function better during the day.
Secondly, take breaks when you need to. It’s important to take some time away from studying to give your mind a break.
Go for a walk, read a book or listen to some music.
Thirdly, make sure you are eating healthily. Avoid junk food and focus on foods that provide energy such as fruits,
vegetables and proteins.
Lastly, take deep breaths when you feel overwhelmed. Breathing exercises can help to lower stress levels and keep you
calm.
Remember, you’ve got this! I believe in you and your abilities.
Take care and good luck!
Best regards,
Iria.
Do you think the way we eat in Galicia is healthy? Why/why not? If you didn’t live with your parents, would you
eat the sort of food you normally have at home? (Approximately 120 words)
In general, the traditional Galician diet is considered to be healthy because it is based on fresh and locally sourced
ingredients such as seafood, vegetables, and legumes. However, like any diet, it can also have its drawbacks if not
balanced properly. For example, some Galician dishes can be high in salt or fat, which can be harmful if consumed in
excess.
If I were a teenager living independently, I would try to maintain a healthy diet similar to the one I had at home. However,
I would also be open to trying new foods and experimenting with different cuisines. Eating healthy can be challenging,
especially if you are busy with school or work, but it is important to prioritize your health and make conscious choices
about what you eat.
In your opinion, are many people addicted to social media and the Internet? Are there any dangers in using them
too much? (Approximately 120 words)
In my opinion, yes, many people are addicted to social media and the internet. The ease of access to social media and
the internet has made it very difficult for people to disconnect, even for a short time. Social media platforms such as
Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, provide a constant stream of notifications and updates that can be addictive.
Additionally, the internet is a source of entertainment, information, and communication, which makes it hard to limit its
use.
Using social media and the internet excessively can have negative effects on mental health, social skills, and physical
health. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and addiction. Excessive screen time can also lead to physical problems such
as headaches, neck pain, and eye strain.
It's essential to use social media and the internet in moderation and take breaks when necessary. One can also limit the
time spent on social media and the internet and engage in other activities such as exercise, reading books, or spending
time outdoors. It's essential to maintain a balance between technology use and other aspects of life to avoid addiction
and negative consequences.
EXAMEN CIENCIAS
1. Trivial Pursuit was invented in 1979 by four Canadian journalists during a game of Scrabble. They quickly
developed the rules and a circular board, but struggled with inventing questions that were unusual and thought-
provoking. Eventually, a Toronto bank manager invested in mass-producing and promoting the game, leading
to over 60 million copies sold in 33 countries. Despite the success, composing questions can be laborious work,
but feedback and corrections help improve them.
5. One game that I enjoy playing is basketball. I like it more than other sports because it requires a combination
of physical and mental skills. It involves running, jumping, and shooting, which are all great exercises for the
body. At the same time, it also requires strategy, teamwork, and quick decision-making. I love the feeling of
being part of a team, working together towards a common goal. In basketball, you need to be able to read the
game, anticipate the movements of your opponents, and communicate effectively with your teammates. It's a
dynamic sport that keeps me on my toes and challenges me both physically and mentally. Plus, there's something
really satisfying about making a shot from a distance and hearing the sound of the ball swishing through the net.

TEXT 1
The signs of the zodiac have existed for hundreds of thousands of years. They are ancient signs that people have
looked to for guidance. Today, thousands of people inspect their horoscopes each day to find out what they are
going to come up against in the world. Studies say 33% of Americans believe in astrology.
There are those who dismiss astrology as false, but the truth is that the signs of the zodiac do have some value.
First, because humans have been using the zodiac for literally thousands of years; through inspecting the
alignment of the planets, masters of astrology have managed to comprehend certain truths about the world.
Second, due to the anecdotal evidence available; people are reporting time and time again that what they read in
their horoscopes comes true. And it happens too often to dismiss it.
As for newspaper horoscopes, anyone can create a horoscope. As long as you know how the language works, you
can make up any horoscope you like. And that’s why astrology has such a bad reputation. The horoscopes you
see in the newspaper are not true to the zodiac because they are composed by a reporter sitting in a room
writing anything that comes to mind.
However, the true value of astrology is its ability to penetrate the part of our minds that naturally gravitates
towards things like divination and the occult. By tapping into this inner meaning, it forces the mind to think in a
different way. And this alone can generate some meaningful insights. Some people say that astrology is about
helping you to understand what you already know. It’s just a matter of forcing it from deep inside you.
Whether it is true or not that the alignment and orientation of planets at birth can determine an individual’s life
situation, there is always going to be something in a person’s horoscope that they can apply to their lives.

TEXT 2
Some mistakes may seem innocuous yet they can carry a high price. On Tuesday a young man from Spain involuntarily
triggered a security alert at Munich airport after walking through the wrong door on his way to catch a Madrid flight,
said federal police in Germany.
As a result, 130 flights were cancelled, causing numerous delays at one of the country’s busiest airports, which was
partially shut down for four hours. The Spaniard could face criminal proceedings over the incident.
The man, who is reported to be aged between 20 and 25, was on his way home after spending his vacation in Thailand
and has stated that he was “horrified” at the outcome of his mistake during a stopover in Munich.
The Spaniard was arrested and interrogated by German security forces soon after the incident, which took place on
Tuesday morning. He said that he had gone to the bathroom after stepping off a flight from Bangkok, and by the time
he left the men’s room all the other passengers had gone. Disoriented, he began walking in the wrong direction as he
tried to find his connecting flight to Madrid.
He eventually pressed a button opening emergency doors to the restricted area reserved for passengers who have
gone through a security check, according to the Bavarian public radio station BR24 and the local newspaper Merkur.
This immediately triggered an alert, as it meant that a passenger from outside the border-free Schengen Area had
bypassed passport controls. Parts of Terminal 1 and 2 were evacuated, and passengers who had already gone through
security checks had to repeat the process.
There were around 1,200 departures scheduled at Munich airport on Tuesday, representing a flow of around 120,000
passengers.

TEXT 1
According to a new study commissioned by an American nonprofit organization that helps young women reach their
full potential, girls are facing increasing pressure to please. “Society still sees girls through a gender lens that requires
them to be pretty and passive, while increasingly expecting girls to be smart and successful,” says the president of
this organization.
The study, conducted online, surveyed over 2,000 girls and boys in grades 3-12, plus 1,005 adults. It reported that
girls have high goals for themselves – 71% want to go to college, but a good many say they don’t know how to make
their dreams a reality. One-fifth say they don’t know three adults they can turn to with a problem. And 76% of girls in
grades 9 to 12 “worry about their appearance.” Even for girls in elementary school, looking “skinny” and “dressing
right” is an issue. Over one-half of 3rd to 5th graders worry about it.
The study also found that gender discrimination is still alive and well, even at the youngest grades. 84% of girls and
87% of boys, for example, believe that girls are “supposed to be kind and caring,” and 88% of girls and 94% of boys
believe boys are “supposed to be able to protect themselves and others.”
This organization has a few recommendations for parents:
o Provide access to a wide variety of toys (trucks and dolls, chemistry sets and dress-up clothes) and make it clear
that it’s okay to play with all of them.
o Alleviate the pressure of high-stakes education. High school grades may matter, but elementary school should be
fun – full of exploration, not stress.
o Distribute household tasks evenly. Boys and girls should be given responsibilities in cleaning up and taking care of
siblings.
Provide role models. Men and women serve a multitude of roles in society. Introduce your children to men and
women across the career spectrum.

TEXT 2
The world-renowned “tidying” coach, Marie Kondo, has helped people around the world clear out the excess stuff
from their homes and lives. Her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and
Organizing, sold over 1.5 million copies, and her Netflix TV show immediately sent viewers down binge-watching
spirals. Kondo’s method of tidying, in which objects are gently cleared out of people’s houses and lives, leaves behind
empty closets and neatly organized spaces. However, it also generates piles of trash. Some of it gets passed along to
friends or family, or finds new homes via donation. But much of it ends up thrown away—out of sight and mind of
the “tidy-er”, but far from gone in the larger planetary sense. Earth, unfortunately, does not have its own trash
collector or tidier. Many economists say consumption is a good thing, but we really have to recognize that there's a
cost to that—and that cost falls onto the environment. Marie Kondo claims that people should examine their own
relationship with stuff and get to the heart of it- ”Why did you buy these things in the first place?”- Eventually,
people will find themselves decreasing the number of things they buy and discard, and ultimately, breaking free from
the buy-toss cycle. She also encourages people to deplasticize their lives. “If they’re already in your life and working,
don’t get rid of them—that would just contribute to the waste issue—but think carefully about bringing new plastic
items into your life”. In the end, she says, it’s the planet that needs tidying—and that can start with the smallest step.

TEXT A
Imagine it is 1955 and you live in the USA. If you are black, you cannot mix with white people in public places. You
cannot go to the same schools, use the same public toilets or sit together on public transport! This is called “racial
segregation” and you could be imprisoned or even killed for not respecting the laws.
In 1955, one black woman refused to give her seat to a white man on a bus. The woman was immediately put in
prison. Her name was Rosa Parks. Rosa Lived in Montgomery. She was a respected member of the black community.
She worked as a seamstress in a department store and took the bus to work every day. Because she was black, she
had to sit in a separate section, at the back of the bus.
December 1st, 1955 was an ordinary day for Rosa. She was travelling home from work when four white passengers got
on the bus. The driver told four black passengers to give up their seats. Three of them did, but Rosa refused. She said
“No”. Immediately Rosa was arrested and spent the night in prison. Community leaders, including Martin Luther King
Jr. decided to protest. They asked black people not to take the bus. Since 75% of bus passengers were black, without
them, buses would lose money! For 381 days, Montgomery’s black citizens walked everywhere. Finally, segregation
on buses was abolished. This was a small victory, but it changed the USA forever. It sparked the civil rights movement
and gave black leaders the confidence to fight for racial equality.
Rosa Parks died in 2005. She never saw Americans elect their first African-American president, Barack Obama in 2008.
But Obama said that without Rosa he would not be president. ”Were it not for that quiet moment of courage by Mrs.
Parks, I would not be standing here today being president” he said.

TEXT B
Just under half of UK parents think their child's school should ban mobile phones and one in eight parents said their
child's school had already done so. The number of gadgets that schoolchildren are carrying into class every day is
mind-boggling and parents are concerned about their children being distracted by mobile phones at school.
Other people think school is a place where kids should be able to learn about technology and when it is
appropriate to use it or not, in a safe environment. They're not being given the opportunity to self-regulate if their
phones are taken away. In addition, many parents want to be able to contact their children in emergencies, and to
find out where they are if they don't turn up at home at the usual time, either by calling them or by using an app.
At one school in Wales, teenagers have volunteered to hand their mobiles in to teachers once a week.
The school had held an assembly to highlight the issue of the addictive nature of phones and in follow-up
conversations with students it was found that the latter also had concerns.
“The question was whether removing their phones and the social media that go with them might cause students
anxiety, social isolation or loneliness”, Mr. Hill, the deputy head teacher said. "We discussed it with our pupils.
We’ve got a pretty open-minded group of pupils here."
Following feedback, the school decided to ask students if they would voluntarily hand in their phones for the day
on Fridays. This wasn’t presented as a punishment but as an opportunity to try something new. Initially, it was the
pupils' choice to hand them in, but, as so many took part, it has now become school policy.
Students have reported feeling more able to focus during homework and revision time and talk about the freedom
the measure created.
Not only were students being taught the importance of how they used their phones and the length of time they
spent on them, they were also building "digital resilience" to help them self-monitor usage.

d. Men have forbidden women from becoming comedians.
1.3. Find words or phrases in the text that correspond in meaning to the words and definitions given here:
(0.75 points) a. comedians b. return c. appropriate
TEXT A
People are funny. These people can be men or women. They can be gay or straight or somewhere in
between. They can be tall, small, fat, thin, standing up or sitting down, bearded, bald, black, brown, yellow and, of
course, white. They come in all the glorious shapes and sizes that human life has to offer. Comedy is very simple. It’s
about telling people things and making them laugh. If you can connect with your audience, you’re laughing, and
hopefully they are too.
As in all walks of life, from politics to business, women comics are rising up the ranks – especially thanks to
organisations such as Laughing Cows, which are brilliant at giving support and encouragement to female stand-up
comics. But the question “Are women funny?” is still being asked, and as a result, a lot of comedy that people see is
very male and very pale.
I’ve recently returned to comedy after a gap of about 10 years. It’s a comeback no one really wanted, to be
honest – myself included – but I needed a job. And, a decade later, there are many more females writing, starring in
and making TV, radio and film. But we still live in an age where men are thought of as the masters of humour.
Women are allowed to be funny, but in controlled numbers.
Sexist cultural gender norms play a part in this. Humour can be very powerful, as it shows confidence and
intelligence – and in our culture that is still the male role. All too often the message to women is sadly that being
funny – or aggressive, bossy, ambitious or even nasty, still isn’t fitting. It is men who should be funny. Most men
prefer a woman to be their audience, not their competition.

3.3. Find words or phrases in the text that correspond in meaning to the words and definitions given here: (0.75

TEXT B
Both men and women have grown taller over the last century, says a study by Imperial College, London. While
Swedes were the tallest people in the world in 1914, Dutch men are now top, with an average height of 182.5cm. Latvian
women, meanwhile, have become the tallest in the world, with an average height of 169.8cm. James Bentham, a co-
author of the study, says that the global trend is likely to be due primarily to improvements in nutrition, hygiene and
healthcare: “Most populations would grow to similar heights if they were all in the same conditions.”
Extra height brings a number of advantages: “Being taller is associated with longer lives,” he says, “due to less risk
of dying of cardiovascular disease.” Taller people, on average, will also have larger salaries and higher levels of education.
For both sexes, European countries now take the top 10 positions for height. That, says Bentham, could be due to the
introduction of a welfare state in many European countries.
By contrast, men from Timor-Leste are the shortest, while the title for the shortest women remains with the
female population of Guatemala. American men occupied third place in 1914 but have dropped to 37 th place in 2014. That,
the authors suggest, could be due to worse levels of nutrition and greater inequalities. The trend in many countries in
north and sub-Saharan Africa is also causing concern: “One reason for the decrease in height in Africa is the economic
situation in the 1980s”. Nutritional and health crises mean that many children and teenagers do not reach their full height.
Bentham believes the global trend of increasing height has important consequences: “How tall we are is influenced by our
environment when we are young,” he said. “If we give children the best possible start in life now, they will be healthier
and more productive for decades to come.”

1.3. Find words or phrases in the text that correspond in meaning to the words and definitions given here: (0.75

TEXT A
Willie Johnson, one of Britain´s most successful inventors, is the man who invented the Micropacer
jogging shoe which records time and speed over distance, and the Gogglevox which gives personal television
a big-screen effect.
Johnson has no scientific background. He relies on design companies and technical experts to translate
his ideas into reality. At an international exhibition of inventions recently, Johnson won nine awards. One of
his winning inventions was the Swallet, an electronic wallet which sounds an alarm if a thief cuts the cord by
which it is attached to the wearer. Johnson´s own personal favourite is the Tantrum, a tiny electronic device
inside a foam brick. When you throw the brick at your TV set, the device sends a signal to a gadget in the
plug socket that turns the electricity off if the set was on or on if it was off.
Until the runaway success of the Micropacer in 1984, he struggled to make a living with a string of
inventions, from cardboard furniture to a trailer that converted into a boat. “Sometimes I did well, but for
each idea that makes you money you may lose on three or four others”. He describes inventing as a
tremendous gamble. Inventors can either sell an idea outright to a manufacturer or collect a percentage of the
sales in royalties. The latter is every inventor´s dream and even a simple idea can turn into a pot of gold if it
is fun, becomes fashionable, and appeals to young people.
Johnson believes that his talent lies in taking technological advances and putting them to creative uses
that other people have not thought of. Whatever happens, Johnson cannot stop inventing.

3.3. Find words or phrases in the text that correspond in meaning to the words and definitions given here: (0.75

TEXT B
When Harvey and Daeida Wilcox purchased 120 acres of farmland northwest of Los Angeles in
1886, they had plans to live a quiet life on their ranch, which they called Hollywood. This prohibitionist
couple’s dream of setting up a fig farm lost strength just one year after buying the land, and as a result the
Wilcoxes divided it up and sold it off quickly to like-minded buyers, imagining that a sober and deeply
religious community would be established on their land. Perhaps their dream of a Christian utopia could
have come true if it had not been for a clever man from New Jersey, Thomas Edison.
The predominant narrative regarding the rise of Hollywood was that land was cheap outside Los
Angeles, where the weather was always pleasant, and labour was easy to find. All these factors that drew
people to Hollywood are completely true; however, the major factor that pushed independent film makers
out west was Edison’s merciless business style, which left film makers only one option: to escape from
New Jersey and Edison´s control.
Edison had patents on over 1,000 different things, including most of the technology needed to make
high- quality movies. In short, if someone wanted to be in the film business, they basically had to go
through Edison. So “independent” film-makers chose an alternative option to fight Edison: they moved to
California, to an area of the country where judges weren’t as friendly to Edison and his patents, and where
copyright laws would not be a problem. These conditions made it possible for Hollywood to legally
flourish without any threats of lawsuits or mob attacks.
Edison was probably the biggest individual influence on Hollywood as we know it today. Without
his ruthless, and eventually illegal, business practices, there is a good chance that New Jersey would still
be home to the film industry and that Hollywood would just be another town outside Los Angeles.

TEXT A
We’ve all done it: pretended to leave an essay at home, or stayed up until 2am to finish a piece of
coursework we’ve been ignoring for weeks. Homework, for some people, is seen as a chore that’s
‘wrecking kids’ or ‘killing parents’, while others think it is an essential part of a well-rounded education.
Why does homework stir up such strong emotions? One reason is that, by its very nature, it is an
intrusion of schoolwork into family life. A study shows that the amount of time that children and
adolescents spend in school, from nursery right up to the end of compulsory education, has greatly
increased over the last century. This means that more of a child’s time is taken up with education, so
family time is reduced. This increases pressure on the boundary between the family and the school.
Besides, the amount of homework that students receive appears to be increasing, especially in the
early years, when parents are keen for their children to play with friends and spend time with the family.
Finally, success in school has become increasingly important to success in life. Parents can use
homework to promote, or control their child’s academic trajectory, and hopefully ensure their future
educational success. But this often leaves parents conflicted – they want their children to be successful in
school, but they don’t want them to be stressed or upset because of an unmanageable workload.
Gender is also a major factor. Studies reveal that girls devote more time to homework than boys,
and tend to spend more time on mathematics homework than boys. One possible reason could be that
teachers tend to rate girls’ habits and attitudes towards work more favourably than boys’.
All of this makes it particularly difficult to determine the extent to which homework is helping,
though it is clear that simply increasing the time spent doing it does not directly correspond to a universal
increase in learning.

TEXT B
Single people who are over thirty but certainly not in their old age have a lot to rejoice about.
There are specialised holidays for them- some of them offered by computer dating services- and at least
one company specifically states that its holidays are for the «Over 30's». For those who don't like to be
herded and organised there are certain holidays emphasized for singles, with no restriction on age and a
welcoming cocktail as the only arranged event. Best of all, the number of available hotel rooms without
the dreaded «single supplement» has increased.
Holidays don't have to have a singles tag to be the right ones. A number of packages where the
key is informality, where everyone eats together family-style, where sports facilities don't cost extra,
are perfect for those on their own. Sometimes ꞏthis type of holiday is termed «houseparty» when it is
designed for much smaller groups of strangers accommodated in a large house or lodge. In most cases
there is a chalet host who not only does the cooking but socialises with the group as well. Many
singles find this an excellent way of meeting new friends.
You may want to consider activity holidays, which aren't necessarily for sporting-types only.
Keep-fit and dance programmes are held at many hotels abroad; organised painting holidays overseas and
in the UK are available; and special interest weekends in Britain range from learning about computers to
hot-air ballooning. Serious wine lovers, botanists, geologists and so on are also catered for by specialised
itineraries which might take them across the Channel to France or as far afield as South Africa.
