SHRI SATENDRA SINGH LOHIYA

Shri Satendra Singh Lohiya is an International Para swimmer.


2. Born on 6th July 1987, as a normal child in a small village in district Gata Bhind (Madhya Pradesh)
Shri Lohiya suffered from diarrhea and due to improper medical treatment nerves of both legs contracted
and consequently, he developed 70% permanent disability in both legs. His parents though poor,
somehow, provided him with primary education in the village. He developed a keen interest in swimming
during his schooling in his village. He picked up swimming in a local river and enjoyed it for hours and
gradually his determination and dedication to swimming grew higher and higher.
2. It was a turning point in life of Shri Lohiya when he met Professor Dr Virendra Kumar Dabas ex
(HOD) Department of Swimming at Laxmibai National Institute of Physical Education Gwalior, Madhya
Pradesh. Dr Dabas helped and trained him for the International and National level Paralympics
swimming. He got tough swimming training under his guidance for two years and then participated in
first 10th National Paralympics Swimming Championship 2009 held at Kolkata, where he won a Bronze
Medal in Free Style among 400 participant's swimmers across the country.
3. Shri Lohiya has started his journey of Open water Sea Swimming in the year 2017 where he

swam 33 Km open water sea swimming feat in Arabian Sea Mumbai on 04 May 2017 from Prongs reef
lighthouse to Elephanta Island. After this in 2018 he crossed the English Channel along with Para
Divyang swimming team with a timing of 12 hrs and 26 minutes covering a distance of 34 km. This
record is published in LIMCA Book and also in the Indian Book of Record. He also crossed the Catalina
Channel Swimming California (USA) along with Para Swimming Relay Team from India in 2019
covering a distance of 36 km, did Open water Feat Relay swimming from Dharamtar to Gateway of India
of 36 km in Mumbai Arabian Sea Swimming in 2021 and in 2022 crossed the North Channel
International level sea swimming competition covering 36 km in Northern Ireland. He crossed the two
ways English Channel Swimming 72 km (UK London) along with Swimming Team from India in 2023
covering a distance of 72 km. He participated in the 21st National Paralympic swimming
championships 2021-22 at Udaipur Rajasthan and won a silver medal in 100 m Backstroke swimming
and second won a silver medal in 50 m Backstroke swimming. In the 22nd National Paralympic
swimming championships 2022 at Guwahati he won a Gold medal in 100 m Backstroke swimming and
second won a silver medal in 50 m He has participated in 11 National Paralympics swimming
championships in which he has won 23 medals including 04 Gold, 12 silvers and 7 bronze medals, he
has also participated in three International Paralympic swimming championships in which he got 01
gold medal 02 silver and 01 bronze medals.
4. Shri Lohiya has completed “Divyang Empowerment Khelo Yatra” with the Tri-wheel Divyang
bike from Kanyakumari to Lal Chowk Kashmir of 4320 kms covered in 19 days for awareness of Para
sports & facilities by the Government for rural & PAN India. The Expedition is recognized by India Book
of Records. He has been selected as the Brand Ambassador for the Assembly Election Voter Awareness
Program 2018 by State Election Commission, Madhya Pradesh.
5. Shri Lohiya has received numerous Awards & Honour from the Government of India including the
highest Sports Award of Madhya Pradesh State “The Vikram Award” (2014); National Award for the
Empowerment of Person with Disabilities Divyanjan (2019) for recognition on outstanding performance as
Best Sportsperson and the “Tenzing Norgay” National Adventure Award 2019 in recognition of excellence
in water adventure sports. He is the first para swimmer from Madhya Pradesh to get this honour.
