ASSIGNMENT QUESTIONS
(Last date for submission:03/03/2018)
1. Each phase of a three-phase alternator generates a voltage
of 3810V and carries a maximum current of 300 A. Find the
line currents, line voltage and total KVA capacity if the
alternator is (a) Star Connected (b) Delta Connected.
Ans: VL=6600V, IL=300A, power(capacity)= 3429 KVA
2. Three 100 Ω resistors are connected first in star and then in
delta across 415 V, 3- phase supply. Calculate the line and
phase currents in each case and also the power taken from
the source.
Ans: Star IL=Ip=2.396A, P=1722.2W Delta IL=7.188A,
Ip=4.15A Power= 5166.7W
3. Unbalanced four wire, star connected load has balanced
supply voltage of 400V. The load impedances are ZA=4+j8Ω,
ZB=3+j4Ω and Zc=15+j10Ω. Calculate the line currents,
neutral current and total power.
Ans: IA=25.83∠ -63.43°, IB=46.2∠-173.13°A
IC=12.82∠86.3° total power=11537w
4. The two-wattmeter method produces wattmeter readings
P1=1560W and P2=2100W when connected to a delta
connected load. If the line voltage is 220V.
Calculate : i)the per-phase average power 2)the per-phase
reactive power 3) the power factor and 4) the phase
impedance.
Ans: i)1220w ii)-311.769 VAR iii)0.9688 leading
iv)38.4346∠-14.355° Ω
5. Obtain the readings of two wattmeters connected to a three-
wire 120V system feeding a balanced delta-connected load
with a load impedance of 12 ∠30 Ω. Assume either phase
sequence. Find the phase power and compare the total
power to the sum of the wattmeter readings.
Ans:W1=2078.46W, W2=1039.23W, Pph=1039.23W
Pt=3117.69W
