a) The figure below shows beam ABCDEF which is simply supported at B and E.

Given that
AB=1m, BC=2m, CD=1m, DE=1m and EF =1m. The beam carries uniformly distributed load
of 30kN/m at BC and 25kN/m at EF. It also has a concentrated load of 20kN at A and 40kN
at D. Draw the Shearing force diagram and Bending moment diagram for the beam shown
indicating all salient values and point contra flexure if any

b) A compressor, requiring 90 kW is to run at about 250 revolutions per minute. The drive is by V-belts
from an electric motor running at 750 revolutions per minute. The diameter of the pulley on the
compressor shaft must not be greater than 1 metre while the centre distance between the pulleys is
limited to 1.75 metre. The belt speed should not exceed 1600 m/min. Determine the number of V-
belts required to transmit the power if each belt has a cross-sectional area of 375 mm 2, density 1000
kg/m3 and an allowable tensile stress of 2.5 MPa. The groove angle of the pulley is 35°. The
coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.25. Calculate also the length required of
each belt
c) A composite shaft of circular cross section 0.5m long is rigidly fixed at each end as shown in
the figure below. A 0.3m length is 50mm diameter and is made of bronze to which is joined
the remaining 0.2m length a 25mm diameter made of steel. If the limiting shear stress in the
steel is 55MN/m2, determine the maximum torque that can be applied at the joint. What is
then the maximum shear stress in the bronze. (G steel= 82 GPa, G= 41bronze GPa)

d) In a horizontal belt drive for a centrifugal blower, the blower is belt driven at 600 r.p.m. by a 15 kW,
1750 r.p.m. electric motor. The centre distance is twice the diameter of the larger pulley. The density
of the belt material = 1500 kg/m3; maximum allowable stress = 4 MPa; coefficient of friction are 0.5
for motor pulley and 0.4 for blower pulley. Take peripheral velocity of the belt as 20 m/s. and
determine the following:
i. Pulley diameters;
ii. belt length;
iii. cross-sectional area of the belt;
iv. minimum initial tension for operation without slip; and
v. resultant force in the plane of the blower when operating with an initial tension 50 per cent
greater than the minimum value
e)
i. Use free body diagram method to derive the differential equations governing the motion
of the system of figure shown below using x1, x2 and x3 as generalized coordinates.
ii. Given that k1=600N/m, k2=525N/m, m1=3kg and m2=2kg. Determine the natural
frequencies of the system and the ratio of the amplitudes.

f) Two pulleys, one 450 mm diameter and the other 200 mm diameter are on parallel shafts 1.95 m apart
and are connected by a crossed belt. Find the length of the belt required and the angle of contact
between the belt and each pulley. What power can be transmitted by the belt when the larger pulley
rotates at 200 rev/min, if the maximum permissible tension in the belt is 1 kN, and the coefficient of
friction between the belt and pulley is 0.25 ?
g) A belt is required to transmit 18.5 kW from a pulley of 1.2 m diameter running at 250rpm to another
pulley which runs at 500 rpm. The distance between the centers of pulleys is 2.7 m. The following
data refer to an open belt drive, coefficient of friction (μ) 0.25. Safe working stress for leather is
1.75 N/mm2. Thickness of belt = 10mm. Determine the width and length of belt taking centrifugal
tension into account. Also find the initial tension in the belt and absolute power that can be
transmitted by this belt and the speed at which this can be transmitted.
h) In an epicyclic gear train, the internal wheels A and B and compound wheels C and D rotate
independently about axis O. The wheels E and F rotate on pins fixed to the arm G. E gears with A and
C and F gears with B and D. All the wheels have the same module and the number of teeth are : TC=
28; TD= 26; TE= TF= 18.
i. Sketch the arrangement ;
ii. Find the number of teeth on A and B ;
iii. If the arm G makes 100 r.p.m. clockwise and A is fixed, find the speed of B; and
iv. If the arm G makes 100 r.p.m. clockwise and wheel A makes 10 r.p.m. counter
clockwise; find the speed of wheel B.
i) The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed of 300 r.p.m. The crank
is 150 mm and the connecting rod is 600 mm long. Determine : 1. Linear velocity and acceleration of
the midpoint of the connecting rod, and 2. angular velocity and angular acceleration of the
connecting rod, at a crank angle of 45° from inner dead centre position.
j) Determine the reactions and construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams for the
beam shown. Mark the salient points and the values at those points.

k) A 32mm diameter solid shaft forms the transmission in a drill of an oil well 3350 m deep. The drilling
speed is 500revolutions per minute and maximum shear stress is limited to 50Mpa. Find the limiting
value of the torque transmitted and the angle of twist of one end of the shaft to the other and the
power required for the drive
l) In a four bar chain ABCD, AD is fixed and is 150 mm long. The crank AB is 40 mm long and rotates
at 120 revolutions per minute clockwise, while the link CD = 80 mm oscillates about D. BC and AD
are of equal length. Find the angular velocity of link CD when angle BAD =60°

m) For the Beam AC shown in figure below, determine the magnitude of load P acting at C, such that
reactions at supports A and B are equal. Draw the Shearing Force Diagram and Bending Moment
Diagram for the beam. Mark all the salient points and their values in the diagrams. Locate the point
of contra flexure, if any

n) A cast iron channel section shown in Figure below is available to be used as a simply supported
beam over a span of 3m. If the permissible stress in tension is 35N/mm 2 and in compression is
90N/mm2, Find its uniformly distributed load carrying capacity if web is in
i. Tension and
ii. Compression
o) The crank of a slider crank mechanism rotates clockwise at a constant speed of 300 r.p.m. The crank
is 150 mm and the connecting rod is 600 mm long. Determine Linear velocity and acceleration of the
midpoint of the connecting rod, and the angular velocity and angular acceleration of the connecting
rod, at a crank angle of 45° from inner dead centre position.
p) A shaft rotating at 200 revolution per minute drives another shaft at 300 revolution per minute and
transmits 6 kW through a belt. The belt is 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The distance between the
shafts is 4m. The smaller pulley is 0.5 m in diameter. Calculate the stress in the belt, if it is i) an open
belt drive, and ii) a cross belt drive. Take µ = 0.3.
q) Find the external diameter of a hollow steel shaft to transmit 3Mw at 20rad/s,if the internal diameter is
0.75 of the external diameter and the maximum shear stress due to torsion is not to exceed 56Mpa. If
the modulus of rigidity of steel is 82Gpa, find the elastic twist of the shaft in a length of 4 m when
stressed to the maximum allowed intensity .
r) A solid shaft 100mm diameter is to be replaced by a hollow shaft having an outside
diameter of 120mm and which will transmit the same torque as the solid shaft with the same
maximum shearing stress. Determine the inside diameter of the hollow shaft and find the
ratio of the angles of twist per unit length of the second to the original shaft. If the shaft
speed is 400 revolution per minute and the maximum shearing stress is 52Mpa, what is the
power transmitted.
s) A machine of mass 100kg is mounted through four similar mountings each of which experiences
linear elasticity and viscous damping. When the machine is given a vertical displacement and let go it
is found to execute free damped oscillations such that the time to complete ten oscillations is 15
seconds and the ratio of the first to the third amplitude is 1.5. Determine
a. The stiffness of each mounting
b. The damping coefficient of each mounting
c. If the machine was to be constrained by addition of viscous dampers. What will be the
damping coefficient of these dampers
t) A horizontal beam of the section shown is 4m long and is simply supported at its end. Calculate the
maximum uniformly distributed load it can carry if the tensile and compressive stresses must not
exceed 32 and 56Mpa respectively. Draw a diagram showing the variations of stresses over the mid
span section of the beam

u) The section I shown in the figure is to be used (upright as shown) for horizontal beams. Calculate the
position of the neutral axis and the second moment of area. A beam 6m long is simply supported
and symmmentrically supported on a span of 4m and has the section shown above, If the tensile
and compressive bending stresses must not exceed 30and 22 Mpa respectively, what is the
maximum load that can be carried by the beam assuming that it is uniformly distributed over its
whole length
