LESSON 3.

1
ACTIVITY
Identify the type of quantitative
research described in each item.
FOOD PREFERENCES OF
TEENAGERS.
THIS TYPE OF RESEARCH COLLECTS
RESPONSES FROM PARTICIPANTS AT
ONE POINT IN TIME.
EFFECTS OF SUGAR CONSUMPTION
ON THE QUANTITY OF SLEEP
NUMBER OF HOURS SPENT ON
USING SOCIAL MEDIA APPLICATIONS
FREQUENCY OF DOING EXERCISE
ACTIVITIES
EFFECTS OF ONLINE INSTRUCTION
ON RETENTION OF IDEAS
ACTIVITY
Classify the data enumerated in
the table below by saying “Aw-
Aw” for quantitative and
“Meh~eh” for qualitative.
WEEKLY
ALLOWANCE
INCOME OF
PARENTS
GENDER
CIVIL STATUS
GASOLINE PRICE
KINDS OF VARIABLES
AND THEIR USES
LESSON 3.1
LESSON OBJECTIVE:

Describes variable and its basic

types and uses.
What is a Variable A variable is a characteristic
of an individual or
organization that can be
observed and measured, and it
can vary among people or
organizations being studied
(Creswell, 2002). It comes from
the root word “vary” or simply
“can change”.
What is a Variable
Most common variables are
AGE
SEX
GENDER
EDUCATION
INCOME
MARITAL STATUS
What is a Variable
For instance:
- the variable sex has two
attributes: male and female.
- The variable income has an
attribute of 5,000 per month,
10,000 per month, 15,000 per
month, and so on.
What is a Variable

5 attributes

Strongly Agree
VARIABLES SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST 2
ATTRIBUTES OTHERWISE IT IS
CONSTANT.
TYPES OF VARIABLES
ACCORDING TO VALUES
Qualitative Variable
variable whose
data are non –
numeric and whose
observation vary in
kind but not in
degree
Qualitative Variable

Examples: sex,
religion, civil status
Quantitative Variable
variable whose
data are counts or
numerical
measurements and
whose observations
vary in magnitude
Quantitative Variable

Examples: age,
income, height,
weight
FOUR TYPES OF VARIABLES
ACCORDING TO
MEASUREMENTS
NOMINAL INTERVAL
ORDINAL RATIO
NOMINAL VARIABLE

represent
categories that
cannot be
ordered in any
particular way
NOMINAL VARIABLE

Biological Sex
Blood Type
Race
Political Party
Zip code
ORDINAL VARIABLE

represent
categories that
can be ordered
from greatest to
smallest
ORDINAL VARIABLE

Grade level
Satisfaction
rating
Socio-economic
status
Rank
INTERVAL VARIABLE

have values that

lie along an
evenly dispersed
range of
numbers
INTERVAL VARIABLE

Employee’s
net worth
Body
Temperature
pH level
RATIO VARIABLE

have variables that lie along

the evenly dispersed range
of numbers when there is an
absolute zero. It possesses
the properties of the interval
variable and has a clear
definition of zero
RATIO VARIABLE
dose amount
weight
length
distance
reaction rate, flow
rate
ACTIVITY
Identify the level of measurement involved
in the following research situations. Use the
following codes:

___________1. The Top 10 songs for the week.
___________2. A fashion designer shares the top 10
most famous fashion statement for the year.
__________3. Mrs. Gabayeron, STEM 11 adviser
surveys her students’ health status whether it is
normal, overweight, obese, wasted, or severely
wasted.
QUESTIONS
__________4. Ms. Rea, the Doctor’s secretary
determines the weight of the baby being brought to
the clinic for treatment.
__________5. A student wants to determine the
average of the correct answers from the last
practical research 2 quizzes.

__________6. A researcher wants to find out the
number of hours that the Senior High School TVL
students spent using social media.
__________7. A veterinary assistant records the
breeds of dogs being brought for treatment in the
veterinary clinic.
QUESTIONS
__________8. You would like to find out the number
of minutes it takes for each member of the class from
their respective house to the school
_________9. A teacher asks the class on the degree
of difficulty (easy, moderate, or difficult) they
experienced in their last periodic examination in
mathematics.
QUESTIONS
_________10. A geoscientist from the Philippine
Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services
Administration (PAGASA) determines the daily
temperature for June.
FOUR TYPES OF VARIABLES ACCORDING TO
MEASUREMENTS

Variable Description Uses

No measure of Used to label variables

Nominal distance without providing any
between the values quantitative value

It implies order/rank They both name and order

Ordinal
FOUR TYPES OF VARIABLES ACCORDING TO
MEASUREMENTS

Variable Description Uses

Intervals between Equal intervals in the numbers

Interval the numbers measured represent real equal
represent something differences in the variables

Ratio It has a true zero Meaningful ratios
