Separating Mixtures
What is a Mixture?
Mixture: A mixture is a material
made up of two or more
different chemical substances
which can be separated by
physical method. There are 21
ways of physical methods in
separating a mixture. (Or) The
process of mixing or being
mixed.
A combination of different
things in which the component
elements are individually
distinct.
What is the process of decanting?
Decanting: is the process of separation
of liquid from solid and other
immiscible (non-mixing) liquids, by
removing the liquid layer at the top
from the layer of solid or liquid below.
Ex: To separate two liquids with
different densities, use decantation.
For instance, when water and oil are
combined, they split into two layers.
Because water is denser than oil, it
sinks to the bottom while oil floats
on top of it. A funnel can be used to
separate it as well.
What is the process
of Evaporation?
• There are 21 ways of physical
methods of separation such as
evaporation and filtration.
Evaporation: is the process in
which liquid water changes into
water vapor, a gaseous state. It
occurs when the water
molecules gain enough energy,
usually from heat, to overcome
the forces holding them
together in the liquid state and
escape into the atmosphere.
What is the process of Filtration?

• Filtration: is the process

of separating solids
from liquids or gases by
passing the mixture
through a filter like
material. The filter
traps the solids
allowing the liquid to
pass through. There
are about four types of
filtration.
Distillation
• Distillation is a purification method for liquids, and can separate components of a
mixture if they have significantly different boiling points .A solvent can be from a
solution by evaporating and then condensing the solvent. This is called distillation this
works because the solvents evaporates and boils but the solute does not it uses the
same processes as evaporation but this time the solvent is collected not the solute The
solution is heated and the solvent evaporates and boils.
Dry Distillation
Dry distillation is the heating of solid materials to produce gases that condense either
into fluid products or into solid products. The term dry distillation includes the
separation process of destructive distillation
Separating Funnel

Some liquids like oil and water can’t mix.

Liquids that don’t mix together are called

immiscible.

We place them in a separating funnel to separate

into two layers.
•The most
dense liquid
will be at the
bottom of the
funnel.
•Ex:
•The bottom
layer is run off
through a tap.
chromatography

Used to separate Depends on their

mixtures of different
soluble substances solubilities in a
like ink or dyes. solvent.
• When a mixture
placed on a piece of
chromatography paper
and a solvent is
allowed to soak up the
paper.
• The most soluble
substance goes up in
the paper and the least
soluble the shortest
distance.
