Form of Government

Democracy is a form of government where the people or the general population


of a state have power over the state. The word democracy comes from the
ancient Greek words demos (the people) and kratos (to rule). The two key
principles of democracy are individual autonomy and equality. Individual
autonomy means that people should be able to control their own lives, and
equality means that everyone should have the same opportunity to influence
decisions that affect them. Democracy is also the only form of government that is
consistent with human rights, such as freedom of thought, conscience, and
religion, freedom of expression, and protection of minorities.

Authoritarianism is a political system characterized by the rejection of political


plurality, the use of strong central power to preserve the political status quo, and
reductions in democracy, separation of powers, civil liberties, and the rule of law.

Totalitarianism is a political system and a form of government that prohibits


opposition political parties, disregards and outlaws the political claims of
individual and group opposition to the state, and controls the public sphere and
the private sphere of society. In the field of political science, totalitarianism is the
extreme form of authoritarianism, wherein all socio-political power is held by a
dictator, who also controls the national politics and the peoples of the nation with
continual propaganda campaigns that are broadcast by state-controlled and by
friendly private mass communications media.

Communism is a form of government most closely associated with the ideas of


Karl Marx, which he outlined in The Communist Manifesto. Communism is based
on the goal of eliminating socioeconomic class struggles by creating a classless
society in which everyone shares the benefits of labor and the state controls all
property and wealth.

Stratocracy is a form of government where the military has control of the


country. The word comes from the Greek word stratos, which means "army", and
the English suffix -cracy. In a stratocracy, military chiefs lead the government, and
military forces administer the branches of government. The government is usually
carried out by military workers and is legal under the jurisdiction's laws.

Theocracy is a form of government where it is believed that a god, deity, or group


of deities, or a deity is in charge. The supreme being is usually thought to rule
through human figures, like politicians and clergy, who are believed to be in direct
contact with and/or of direct descent from the supreme being.
