Types of communication systems

Wired Communications Wireless communications

(Guided) (Unguided)

Twisted Optical
Coaxial Fiber Air Space
Pair Cables Cables Cables

❑ Wired communication (Guided Communication)

The information Signal is Transmitted from Transmitter to intended receiver
via physical connection (cable)

❑ Wireless communication (Unguided Communication)

The information Signal is Transmitted from Transmitter to intended receiver
via Space without any connection
Why we use wireless communications
(Motivations to wireless communications)

1 The wired Network is Very Expensive

There are regions where the extension of

2 physical cables is very difficult

There are types of communication can not

3 fit with wired networks
Comparison between wired communication networks and
wireless communication networks

Parameters networks networks
Media Each cable is different channel The media is shared by all users

Connection Types

Half Full
Simplex Duplex
Duplex
Frequency Time
Division Division
Duplex Duplex
(FDD) (TDD)
Connection Types

1-Simplex Connection : The communication between sender

and receiver occurs in only one direction. The sender can only
send the data, and the receiver can only receive the data. The
receiver cannot reply to the sender.

Ex: Tv Broadcasting ,Radio Broadcasting

Connection Types

Half Duplex : The communication between sender and receiver

occurs in both directions in half duplex transmission, but only one at
a time.
❑ The sender and receiver can both send and receive the
information, but only one is allowed to send at a certain time.
❑ Ex.: Walkie Talkie
Connection Types

Full Duplex : In full duplex transmission mode, the

communication between sender and receiver can occur
simultaneously. The sender and receiver can both
transmit and receive at the same time.
Frequency Division Duplex (FDD)

❑ The spectrum is divided into pair of spectrum bands

separated by a guard band
❑ Every user needs Two bands of frequencies
➢ Downlink (Forward band) :From BS to mobile
➢ Uplink (Reverse band) : From Mobile to BS

Duplex Distance
❑Example
45MHz
➢ GSM 900 uses FDD
BW BW
25 MHz Guard Band 25 MHz
20 MHz

890 MHz 915 MHz 935 MHz 960 MHz

Time Division Duplex (TDD)

❑ It can be applied for "Unpaired spectrum"

❑ The UL and DL data are transmitted on the same carrier frequency
at different times.
❑ Use time instead of frequency to provide both Uplink and Downlink .
❑ Each duplex channel has both a forward time slot and a reverse time
slot.
❑ Example :
❑ 1- Digital Enhanced cordless telephone (DECT)
2 Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS)
3 Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access,(WIMAX)
