This paper is divided into four sections – A, B, C and D


Answer all questions
Section A consists of one question having sub-parts of one mark each.
Section B consists of ten questions of two marks each.
Section C consists of seven questions of three marks each
Section D consists of three questions of five marks each.
Internal choices have been provided in one question each in Section B, Section C and
Section D.
In working out problems, use the following data: Gas constant R = 1987 cal deg-1 mol-1 = 8314
JK-1 mol-1 = 00821 dm3 atm K-1mol-1
1 l atm = 1 dm3 atm = 1013 J. 1 Faraday = 96500 coulombs.

(C) Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow. [3x1]

Electrochemistry plays an important part in our daily life. Primary cells like dry cell is used in
torches, wall clock; mercury cell is used in hearing aids, watches. Secondary cells Ni-Cd cell is
used in cordless phones; lead storage battery is used in vehicle and inverter. Fuel cells like
H2-O2 cell was used in Apollo space programme. A 38% solution of sulphuric acid is used in
lead storage battery. Its density is 1.30 g mL-1. The battery holds 3.5 L of the acid. During the
discharge of the battery, the density of H2SO4 falls to 1.14 g mL-1 (20% solution by mass).
(Molar mass of H2SO4 is 98 g mol-1).

(i) Write the chemical reaction taking place at anode and cathode when the current is drawn from
the lead storage battery.
(ii) Give one advantage and one limitation of Fuel cell.
(iii) What is the mass of sulphuric acid in solution after discharge?

(i) The slope of the line in the graph of log k (k= rate constant) vs. 1/T is -5841. Calculate the
activation energy for the reaction.
(ii) The activation energy of a reaction is zero. Will the rate constant of the reaction depend upon
temperature? Give reason.

(i) Dehydration of 2-methyl propan-2-ol occurs faster than butan-1-ol.
(ii) pka value of 4-nitrobenzoic acid is lower than that of benzoic acid.

Give reason for the following:
(i) The paramagnetic character of 3d transition series elements increases upto Mn and then
decreases.
(ii) Potassium ferrocyanide is not toxic but potassium cyanide is toxic.

Tollen’s test but gives positive Iodoform test. Isomers A and B on reduction with
Zn(Hg)/conc.HCl give the same product D. Write the structures of A, B, C and D.

forms orange coloured compound ‘E’.

in it.

(b) Conductivity of 0.00241 M acetic acid is 7.896 x 10-5 ohm-1cm-1. Calculate its molar conductivity
and if λ0mfor acetic acid is 390.5 ohm-1cm2mol-1, what is its dissociation constant?
(c) The standard reduction potential of X, Y and Z metals are 0.52, -3.03 and -1.18 respectively.
Arrange them in decreasing order of their reducing power.
(d) Two metallic elements A and B have the following oxidation potentials.
A = 0.40 V, B = - 0.80 V.
What would you expect if element A was added to an aqs salt solution of element B?
(e) Calculate the number of coulombs required to deposit 20.25 g of aluminium (atomic mass =
27) from a solution containing Al3+. Also name the law or principle associated with it.
