THE SANCTUARY MESSAGE

SECTION THIRTY-ONE
THE 1888 MESSAGE AND THE SANCTUARY
"The Lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders
Waggoner and Jones. This message was to bring more prominently before the world the uplifted Saviour,
the sacrifice for the sins of the world. It presented justification through faith in the Surety; it invited the
people to receive the righteousness of Christ which is made manifest in obedience to all the
commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. They needed to have their eyes directed to His
divine person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All power is given unto men
imparting the priceless gift of His own righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the message
that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed
with a loud voice, and attended with the outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure.

"The uplifted Saviour is to appear in His efficacious work as the Lamb slain, sitting upon the throne,
to dispense the priceless covenant blessings, the benefits He died to purchase for every soul who should
believe on Him. John could not express that love in words; it was too deep too broad' he calls upon the
human family to behold it. Christ is pleading for those for whom He paid the redemption price of His own
lifeblood. Centuries, ages, can never diminish the efficacy of this atoning sacrifice. The message of the
gospel of His grace was to be given to the church in clear and distinct lines that the world should no longer
say that Seventh-day Adventists talk the law, but do not teach or believe Christ.

"The efficacy of the blood of Christ was to be presented to the people with freshness and power,
that their faith might lay hold upon its merits. As the high priest sprinkled the warm blood upon the mercy
seat, while the fragrant cloud of incense ascended before God, so while we confess our sins and plead the
efficacy of Christ's atoning blood, our prayers are to ascend to heaven, fragrant with the merits of our
Saviour's character. Notwithstanding our unworthiness, we are ever to bear in mind that there is One that
can take away sin and save the sinner. Every sin acknowledge before God with a contrite heart, He will
remove. This faith is the life of the church. As the serpent was lifted up in the wilderness by Moses, and all
that had been bitten by the fiery serpents were bidden to look and live, so also the Son of man must be
lifted up, that 'whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'

"Unless he makes it his life business to behold the uplifted Saviour, and by faith to accept the
merits which it is his privilege to claim, the sinner can no more be saved than Peter could walk upon the
water unless he kept his eyes fixed steadily upon Jesus. Now, it has been Satan's determined purpose to
eclipse the view of Jesus and lead men to look to man, and trust to man, and be educated to expect help
from man. For years the church has been looking to man and expecting much from man, but not looking to
Jesus, in whom our hopes of eternal life are centered. Therefore God gave to His servants a testimony
that presented the truth as it is in Jesus, which is the third angel's message, in clear, distinct lines."—
Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 91-93.

"Never was there a time when the Lord would manifest His great grace unto His chosen ones more
fully than in these last days when His law is made void. 'The Lord is well pleased for His righteousness'
sake; He will magnify the law, and make it honorable.' What does God say in regard to His people? 'But
this is a people robbed and spoiled; they are all of them snared in holes, and they are hid in prison houses:
they are for a prey, and none delivereth; for a spoil, and none saith, Restore: (see also Isaiah 43.) These
are prophecies that will be fulfilled. . . Your turning things upside down is known of the Lord. Go on , little
longer as you have gone, in rejection of the light from leaven, and you are lost. 'The man that shall be
unclean, and shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from among the congregation:

"I have no smooth message to bear to those who have been so long as false guideposts, pointing
the wrong way. If you reject Christ's delegated messengers you reject Christ. Neglect this great salvation,
kept before you for years, despise this glorious offer of justification through the blood of Christ and
sanctification through the cleansing power of the Holy Spirit, and there remaineth no more sacrifice for
sins, but a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation. I entreat you now to humble
yourselves and cease your stubborn resistance of light and evidence. Say unto the Lord, Mine iniquities
have separated between me and my God. 0 Lord, pardon my transgressions. Blot out my sins from the
book of Thy remembrance. Praise His holy name, there is forgiveness with Him, and you can be
converted, transformed.

" 'For if the blood of bulls and of goats and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth
to the purifying of the flesh: how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered
Himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?' "
Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 96-98.

"The loud cry of the Third Angel has already begun in the revelation of the righteousness of Christ,
the sin-pardoning Redeemer. This is the beginning of the light of the angel whose glory shall fill the whole
earth." 1 Selected Messages, 363. (For more information on this "other angel," the angel of Revelation
18:1-4, read: Great Controversy, 389-390; Evangelism 692-693; 7 Bible Commentary, 984.)

"What then did the brethren reject at Minneapolis? . . They rejected the latter rain—the loud cry of
the Third Angel's Message. . Brethren, the time has come to take up tonight what we there rejected. Not a
soul of us has ever been able to dream yet the wonderful blessing that God had for us at Minneapolis, and
which we would have been enjoying these four years, if hearts had been ready to receive the message
which God sent. We would have been four years ahead; we would have been in the midst of the wonders
of the loud cry itself." A. T. Jones, General Conference Bulletin, Study 7, 1893.

"And before He comes thus, His people must be in that condition [of without spot or wrinkle] .
Before He comes we must have been brought to that state of perfection in the complete image of Jesus.
Ephesians 4:7-8,11-13. And this state of perfection, this developing in each believer the complete image of
perfection, this developing in each believer the complete image of Jesus—this is the finishing of the
mystery of God [Revelation 10:7], which is Christ in you the hope of glory [Colossians 1: 27]. This
consummation is accomplished in the cleansing of the Sanctuary, which is the finishing of the mystery of
God, which is the final finishing of transgression, the making of a complete end of sins, the making of
reconciliation for iniquity, the bringing in of everlasting righteousness, the sealing up of the vision and
prophecy, and the anointing of the most holy [Daniel 9:24].
"The present time being the time when the coming of Jesus and the restitution of all things is at the
very doors; and this final perfecting of the saints having necessarily to precede the coming of the Lord and
the restitution of all things; we know every evidence, that now we are in the times of refreshing—the time
of the latter rain. And as certainly as that is so, we are also in the time of the utter blotting out of all sins
that have ever been against us. And the blotting out of sins [Acts 3:19; Great Controversy, 483, 485, etc.]
is exactly this thing of the cleansing of the Sanctuary [Daniel 8: 14 ; it is the finishing of all transgressions
in our lives; it is the making an end of all sins in our character; it is the bringing in of the very righteousness
of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ to abide alone everlasting. . Therefore now as never before, _e are
to repent and be converted, that our sins may be blotted out, that an utter end shall be made of them
forever in our lives and everlasting righteousness brought in: and this, in order that the fullness of the
outpouring of the Holy Spirit shall be ours in this time of the refreshing of the latter rain. And all this must
be done in order that the harvest-ripening message of the gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all
the world with that power from on high by which the earth shall be lightened with its glory. (Revelation
18:1.)"A.T. Jones, The Consecrated Way to Christian Perfection, pages 123-135.

"Several have written to me, inquiring if the message of justification by faith is the Third Angel's
message, and I have answered, 'It is the Third Angel's message in verity.' "Review, April 1, 1890, quoted
in Evangelism, 190.

"Be on guard against the idea that the blotting out of sin is merely as the passing of a sponge over
a slate, or an entry in a ledger to balance an account. This is not the blotting out of sin: An ignorant man
who saw a thermometer for the first time thought to lessen the heat by breaking it. But how much effect did
this have upon the weather?—Just as much as the wiping out of the record of his sin has upon the sinner.

"The tearing of a leaf out of a book, or even the burning of the book containing the record, does not
blot out the sin. The sin is not blotted out by blotting out the account of it, any more than throwing my Bible
in the fire abolishes the Word of God. There was a time when all the Bibles that could be found were
destroyed; but the Word of God—the truth remained just the same. .

"When Moses broke the tables of stone, the law was just as steadfast as it was before, Just so,
though all the record of all our sin, even though written with the finger of God, were erased, the sin would
remain, because the sin is in us. Though the record of our sin were graven in the rock, and the rock should
be ground to powder—even this would not blot out our sin.

"The blotting out of sin is the erasing of it from the nature, the being, of man. . The erasing of sin is
the blotting of it from our natures, so that we shall know it no more. 'The worshipers once purged'—
actually purged by the blood of Christ—have 'no more conscience of sin: because the way of sin is gone
from them. Their iniquity may be sought for, but it will not be found. It is forever gone from them,—it is
foreign to their new natures, and even though they may be able to recall the fact that they have committed
certain sins, they have forgotten the sin itself—they do not think of doing it any more. This is the work of
Christ in the true Sanctuary, which the Lord pitched, and not man,—the Sanctuary not made with hands,
but brought into existence by the thought of God." E. J. Waggoner, "The Blotting Out of Sin," in Review,
September 30, 1902.

"The angels of God in their messages to men represent time as very short. Thus it has always
been presented to me. It is true that time has continued longer than we expected in the early days of this
message. Our Saviour did not appear as soon as we hoped. But has the word of the Lord failed? Never! It
should be remembered that the promises and threatenings of God are alike conditional.

"God had committed to His people a work to be accomplished on earth. The third angel's message
was to be given, the minds of believers were to be directed to the heavenly sanctuary, where Christ had
entered to make atonement for His people. The Sabbath reform was to be carried forward. The breach in
the law of God must be made up. The message must be proclaimed with a loud voice, that all the
inhabitants of earth might receive the warning. The people of God must purify their souls through
obedience to the truth, and be prepared to stand without fault before Him at His coming.

"Had Adventists, after the great disappointment in 1844, held fast their faith, and followed on
unitedly in the opening providence of God, receiving the message of the third angel and in the power of
the Holy Spirit proclaiming it to the world, they would have seen the salvation of God, the Lord would have
wrought mightily with their efforts, the work would have been completed, and Christ would have come ere
this to receive His people to their reward." 1 Selected Messages, pp. 67, 68.

"It was not the will of God that the coming of Christ should be so long delayed, and His people
remain so many years in this world of sin and sorrow. Ah, we are responsible for that. Is not that so? In
what thing are we guilty? Unbelief. But what was in the hearts of Israel that caused their unbelief? Egypt,
Egypt, Egypt! What, then, has been in the hearts of these people that has caused this unbelief and this
holding back from God? Egypt, as certainly as Egypt ever did over yonder. Spiritually that which is Egypt—
the world, idolatry, darkness, which is unbelief. The word 'unbelief' expresses it all."—Alonzo T. Jones,
Study series, number 4: Lecture entitled "Spiritual Egypt, " in General Conference Daily Bulletin, March
5.1897.

"The slumbering church must be aroused, awakened out of its spiritual lethargy, to a realization of
the important duties which have been left undone. The people have not entered the holy place, where
Jesus has gone to make an atonement for His children."—Review, February 25, 1890. [As in all Pilgrims'
Rest publications, references without author identity, in all non-Biblical citations, are from the writings of
Ellen G. White.]

"Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of
refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3: 19.

"For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean
from all your sins before the Lord." Leviticus 16:30 (Summarizing the purpose of the Day of Atonement).

"For on this day, atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you of all your sins; you shall be
clean before the Lord." Leviticus 16:30, in the Torah Translation, by Hebrew scholars.

"I beheld till the thrones were cast down [placed], and the Ancient of days did sit, whose garment
was white as snow, and the hair of His head like the pure wool: His throne was like the fiery flame, and His
wheels as burning fire.

"A fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him: thousand thousands ministered unto Him,
and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him: the judgment was set and the books were
opened.

"But the [investigative] judgment shall sit, and they shall take away his dominion, to consume and
to destroy it unto the end. And the kingdom and dominion, and the greatness of the kingdom under the
whole heaven, shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High, whose kingdom is an everlasting
kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey Him." Daniel 7:910, 2627.

"The mass of people think that if a person is prepared to die, he is prepared for the coming of the
Lord. But they do not consider the difference between dying and standing alive to meet the Lord at His
appearing. It is one thing to die in the Lord, to yield our spirits to Him while He is pleading for us before the
Father's throne, and quite a different thing to stand in the time of trouble after Jesus has ceased to plead in
man's behalf, after His priesthood is closed, and He is preparing to come to redeem His own, and take
vengeance on His foes. They who realize these things will bless heaven that means have been devised in
the mercy of God for the perfection of the saints."—James White, Life Sketches of James and Ellen G.
White, page 431. (This was the 1888 edition. The present "Life Sketches" does not contain this statement
by James White.)

"In the manifestation of the power that lightens the earth with its glory, they will see only something
which in their blindness they think dangerous, something which will arouse their fears and they will brace
themselves against it. Because the Lord does not work according to their expectations and ideas, they will
oppose the work."—Bible Training School, May 1907.

"The lord in His great mercy sent a most precious message to His people through Elders Jones
and Waggoner. . God gave His messengers just what the people needed."—Testimonies to Ministers, 91,
95.

"If the rays of light which shone at Minneapolis were permitted to exert their convincing power upon
those who took their stand against light, if all had yielded their ways, and submitted their wills to the Spirit
of God at that time, they would have received the richest blessings, disappointed the enemy, and stood as
faithful men, true to their convictions. They would have had a rich experience; but self said, 'No.' Self was
not willing to be bruised; self struggled for the mastery, and everyone of those souls will be tested again on
the points where they failed then."—Letter to O.A. Olsen, September 1, 1892.

"The message given us by A.T. Jones and E.J. Waggoner is the message of God to the Laodicean
church."—Letter, September 24, 1892.

"Those whom God has sent with a message are only men, but what is the character of the
message which they bear? Will you dare to turn from, or make light of, the warnings, because God did not
consult you as to what would be preferred?"—Review, December 27, 1890.

"That light which is to fill the whole earth with its glory has been despised by some who claim to
believe present truth. I can never forget the experience which we had in Minneapolis, or the things which
were then revealed to me in regard to the spirit that controlled men, the words spoken, the actions done in
obedience to the powers of evil. . They were moved at the meeting by another spirit, and they knew not
that God had sent these young men to bear a special message to them which they treated with ridicule
and contempt, not realizing that the heavenly intelligences were looking upon them. . The Spirit of God
was insulted. . Many have entered into dark, secret paths, and some will never return. They will continue
to stumble to their ruin. They have tempted God, they have rejected light." Testimonies to Ministers, 8990.

"They heard not, neither would they understand. Why? lest they should be converted and have to
acknowledge that all their ideas were not correct. This they were too proud to do, and therefore persisted
in rejecting God's counsel and the light and evidence which had been given. . This is the ground which
some of our leading brethren are traveling over now." Manuscript 25, 1890.

"In Minneapolis God gave precious gems of truth to His people in new settings. This light from
heaven, by some was rejected with all the stubbornness the Jews manifested in rejecting Christ. The work
for this time has certainly been a surprising work of various hindrances, owing to the false settings of
matters before the minds of many of our people. That which is food to the churches is regarded as
dangerous, and should not be given to them."—Manuscript 13, 1889.

"Since the time of the Minneapolis meeting, I have seen the state of the laodicean church as never
before. I have heard the rebuke of God spoken to those who feel so well satisfied, who know not their
spiritual destitution." Review, August 26, 1890.

"Now our meeting [here at Minneapolis] is drawing to a close and. . there has not been a single
break [to confess wrong] so as to let the Spirit of God in. Now I was saying what was the use of our
assembling here together and for our ministering brethren to come in if they are here only to shut out the
Spirit of God from the people?"—Sermon on October 24, 1888, at the Minneapolis General Conference
(Manuscript 9, 1888).

"I shall never, I think, be called upon to stand under the direction of the Holy Spirit as I stood at
Minneapolis. The presence of Jesus was with me. But in the rooms occupied by some of our people was
heard ridicule, criticism, jeering, laughter. The manifestations of the Holy Spirit were attributed to
fanaticism. . All this the heavenly Watcher noticed, and it is written in the book." Statement at Sunnyside,
Cooranbong, Australia, May 31,1896.

"The true religion, the only religion of the Bible, that teaches forgiveness only through the merits of
a crucified and risen Saviour, that advocates righteousness by the faith of the Son of God has been
slighted, spoken against, ridiculed, and rejected. It has been denounced as leading to enthusiasm and
fanaticism." Testimonies to Ministers. 468.

"If men would only give up their spirit of resistance to the Holy Spirit,—the spirit which has long
been leavening their religious experience,—God's Spirit would address itself to their hearts. . But the Holy
Spirit has been rejected, and light has been rejected." Testimonies to Ministers, 393.

"No more tender calls, no better opportunities could be given them in order that they might do that
which they ought to have done at Minneapolis. . No one can tell how much may be at stake when
neglecting to comply with the call of the Spirit of God. The time will come when they will be willing to do
anything and everything possible in order have a chance of hearing the call which they rejected at
Minneapolis. . Better opportunities will never come, deeper feelings they will not have. . God will not be
trifled with."—Letter to O. A. Olsen, September 1, 1892.

"Our young men look to our older brethren, and as they see that they do not accept the message,
but treat it as though it were of no consequence, it influences those who are ignorant of the Scriptures to
reject the light. These men who refuse to receive truth, interpose themselves between the people and the
light."—Review, March 18, 1890.

"For nearly two years we have been urging the people to come up and accept the light and truth
concerning the righteousness of Christ, and they do not know whether to come and take hold of this
precious truth or not."—Review, March 11,1890.

"Brethren, we want to have the simplicity of Christ. I know that He has a blessing for us. He had it
[to offer to us] at Minneapolis, and He had it for us at the time of the General Conference here [in 1889].
But there was no reception. Some received the light for the people, and rejoiced in it. Then there were
others who stood right back. And their position has given confidence to others to talk unbelief, and cherish
it . . In the chapel hall [at Minneapolis] , the power of God was all ready to fall upon us. I felt for a little time
as though I could look right into glory; but the spirit that was there drove it away." Sermon, at Battle Creek
Tabernacle, March 16, 1890.

"The atmosphere of the church is so frigid, its spirit is of such an order, that men and women
cannot sustain or endure the example of primitive and heaven-born piety. The warmth of their first love is
frozen up, and unless they are watered over by the baptism of the Holy Spirit, their candlestick will be
removed out of its place." Testimonies to Ministers, 167168.

"If God spares their lives, and they nourish the same spirit that marked their course of action both
before and after the Minneapolis meeting, they will fill up to the full the deeds of those whom Christ
condemned when He was upon the earth."—Review, April 4, 1893.

"Did you accept the message? Did you heed the appeal? He gave you opportunity to come up
armed and equipped to the help of the Lord. And having done all, He told you to stand. But did you make
ready? Did you say, 'Here am I; send me'? You sat still and did nothing. You left the word of the Lord to fall
unheeded to the ground; and now the Lord has taken men who were boys when you were standing at the
forefront of the battle, and has given to them the message and the work which you did not take upon you.
Will you be stumbling blocks to them? Will you criticize? Will you say, 'They are getting out of their place?'
Yet you do not fill the place they are now called to fill." Testimonies to Ministers, 413.

"Today there are few who are heartily serving God. The most of those who compose our
congregations are spiritually dead in trespasses and sins. . The sweetest melodies that come from God
through human lips—justification by faith, and the righteousness of Christ—do not bring forth from them a
response of love and gratitude. . They steel their hearts against Him. . If they continue in this state, God
will reject them with abhorrence. . Awake, awake, before it is everlastingly too late!"—Review, April 4,
1893.

"We may have to remain here in this world because of insubordination many more years, as did the
children of Israel, but for Christ's sake His people should not add sin to sin by course of action. . But if all
now would only see and confess and repent of their own course of action in departing from the truth of
God, and following human devisings, then the Lord would pardon."—Letter, December 7, 1901
(Manuscript 184, 1901)

"In every meeting since the General Conference [held in Minneapolis in 1888], souls have eagerly
accepted the precious message of the righteousness of Christ. We thank God that there are souls who
realize that they are in need of something which they do not possess,—gold of faith and love, white
raiment of Christ's righteousness, eye salve of spiritual discernment.

"If you possess these precious gifts, the temple of the human soul will not be like a desecrated
shrine."—Review, July 23, 1889.

"What is faith? It is simply taking God at His Word; it is believing that God will do just as He has
promised. . A person will manifest all the faith that he has. If he believes that we are really living in the last
days, he will devote his time and talents to the service of God."—Signs, September 9,1889.

"Genuine faith works by love, and purifies the soul. There is a faith that has power to cleanse the
life from sin. . That faith, and that alone, which cleanses the soul temple, is the genuine faith." Signs,
February 17, 1890.

"Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth fruit in obedience. . It is not faith that claims the
favor of Heaven without complying with the conditions on which mercy is to be granted. Genuine faith has
its foundation in the promises and provisions of the Scriptures."—Gospel Workers, 260.

"Not one of us will ever receive the seal of God while our characters have one spot or stain upon
them. It is left with us to remedy the defects in our characters, to cleanse the soul temple of every
defilement. Then the latter rain will fall upon us as the early rain fell upon the disciples on the day of
Pentecost." 5 Testimonies, 214. (Volume 5 was written between 1882 and 1889.)

"The people are sighing and crying for the abominations done in the land. With tears they warn the
wicked of their danger in trampling upon the divine law, and with unutterable sorrow they humble
themselves before the Lord on account of their own transgressions. The wicked mock their sorrow, ridicule
their solemn appeals, and sneer at what they term their weakness. But the anguish and humiliation of
God's people is unmistakable evidence that they are regaining the strength and nobility of character lost in
consequence of sin. It is because they are drawing nearer to Christ, and their eyes are fixed upon His
purity, that they so clearly discern the exceeding sinfulness of sin. . As the people of God afflict their souls
before Him, pleading for purity of heart, the command is given, 'Take away the filthy garments from them,
and the encouraging words are spoken, 'Behold, I have caused thine iniquity to pass from thee, and I will
clothe thee with change of raiment: The spotless robe of Christ's righteousness is placed upon the tried,
tempted, yet faithful children of God. The despised remnant are clothed in glorious apparel, nevermore to
be defiled by the corruptions of the world. Their names are retained in the Lamb's book of life, enrolled
among the faithful of all ages. They have resisted the wiles of the deceiver; they have not been turned
from their loyalty by the dragon's devices. Their sins are transferred to the originator of sin. . While Satan
was urging his accusations and seeking to destroy this company, holy angels, unseen, were passing to
and fro, placing upon them the seal of the living God. 5 Testimonies, 474475. (Written in or near the year
1888.)

"The slumbering church must be aroused, awakened out of its spiritual lethargy, to a realization of
the important duties which have been left undone. The people have not entered the holy place, where
Jesus has gone to make an atonement.—Review, February 25, 1890.

"Are we striving with all our power to attain to the stature of men and women in Christ? Are we
seeking for His fullness, ever pressing toward the mark set before us—the perfection of His character?
When the Lord's people reach that mark they will be sealed in their foreheads. Filled with the Spirit, they
will be complete in Christ, and the recording angel will declare, 'It is finished: "Review, June 1 0, 1902.

SECTION THIRTY-TWO

THE INVESTIGATIVE JUDGMENT

The material in this section comes from a compilation prepared by the Ellen G. White Estate.

"God showed me the following, one year ago this month: I saw a throne and on it sat the Father
and His Son Jesus Christ. . . I saw the Father rise from the throne and in a flaming chariot go into the Holy
of Holies within the veil, and did sit. . . And I saw a cloudy chariot with wheels like flaming fire. Angels were
all about the chariot as it came where Jesus was. He stepped into it and was borne to the Holiest where
the Father sat.—The Day Star, March 14, 1846, p. 7. [See also Early Writings, 55].

"As the priests in the earthly sanctuary entered the most holy once a year to cleanse the sanctuary,
Jesus entered the most holy of the heavenly, at the end of the 2300 days of Daniel 8, in 1844, to make a
final atonement for all who could be benefited by His mediation, and to cleanse the sanctuary. "I saw that
every case was then decided for life or death. Jesus had blotted out the sins of His people. . . While Jesus
had been ministering in the sanctuary, the judgment had been going on for the righteous dead, and then
for the righteous living." 1 Spiritual Gifts, 162, 197198.

"Thus was presented to the prophet's vision the great and solemn day when the characters and the
lives of men should pass in review before the Judge of all the earth. . . Attended by heavenly angels. our
great High Priest enters the holy of holies, and there appears in the presence of God, to engage in the last
acts of His ministration in behalf of man, to perform the work of investigative judgment, and to make an
atonement for all who are shown to be entitled to its benefits."—Great Controversy, 479, 480.

"I saw that they were correct in their reckoning of the prophetic periods. Prophetic time closed in
1844, and Jesus entered the most holy place to cleanse the sanctuary at the ending of the days."—Early
Writings, 243.

"The tenth day of the seventh month, the great Day of Atonement, the time of the cleansing of the
sanctuary, which in the year 1844 fell upon the twenty-second of October, was regarded as the time of the
Lord's coming. This was in harmony with the proofs already presented that the 2300 days would terminate
in the autumn. . .

"The computation of the prophetic periods on which that message was based, placing the close of
the 2300 days in the autumn of 1844, stands without impeachment." Great Controversy, 400, 457.

"Men may forget, men may deny their wrong course of action, but a record of it is kept in the book
of remembrance. and in the great day of judgment, unless men repent and walk humbly before God they
will meet this dread record just as it stands."—Youth Instructor, April 4, 1905.

"As the features of the countenance are reproduced with marvelous exactness in the camera of the
artist, so is the character faithfully delineated in the books above." 4 Spirit of Prophecy, 311.

"Page after page the history of our life experience is written, with the motives that prompted us to
action. All will appear as a real-life picture, showing how much of our life was given to pleasing self, how
much to blessing others how much to answering the purpose of God in our creation." Review and Herald,
January 13,1891, p. 17.

"Every temptation resisted, every evil overcome, every word of tender pity expressed, is faithfully
chronicled. And every act of sacrifice, every suffering and sorrow endured for Christ's sake, is recorded."—
Great Controversy, 481.

"God sees many temptations resisted of which the world, and even near friends, never know;
temptations in the home, In the heart; He sees the soul's humility in view of its own weakness, the sincere
repentance over even a thought that is evil; He sees the whole heart's devotion to the upbuilding of the
cause of God, without one tinge of selfishness; He has noted those hours of hard battle with self battles
that won the victory all this God and angels know." Letter 18,1891.

"We are never alone. We have a Companion, whether we choose Him or not. Remember, young
men and young women, that wherever you are, whatever you are doing, God is there. ", Of your every
word and action you have a witness, the holy, Sin-hating God. Nothing that is said or done or thought can
escape His infinite eye. Your words may not be heard by human ears, but they are heard by the Ruler of
the universe. He reads the inward anger of the soul when the will is crossed. He hears the expression of
profanity. In the deepest darkness and solitude He is there."

"Day by day the record of your words, your actions, and your influence, is being made in the books
of heaven. This you must meet." Youth Instructor, May 26, 1898. [See also 3 Bible Commentary, 1153}

"In the typical service only those who had come before God with confession and repentance, and
whose sins, through the blood of the sin offering, were transferred to the sanctuary, had a part in the
service of the Day of Atonement. So in the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment the
only cases considered are those of the professed people of God. The judgment of the wicked is a distinct
work and takes place at a later period."—Great Controversy, 480. ' "He has given light and life to all, and
according to the measure of light given, each is to be judged." Desire Of Ages 210 ,

"Those who have an opportunity to hear the truth, and yet take no pains to hear or understand it,
thinking that if they do not hear, they will not be accountable, will be judged guilty before God the same as
if they had heard and rejected. . . Jesus had made atonement for all sins of ignorance but there is no
provision made for willful blindness." 5 Bible Commentary, 1145.

"None will be condemned for not heeding light and knowledge that they never had, and they could
not obtain." 5 Bible Commentary, 1145. [See also 2 Testimonies 691]

"Among the heathen are those who worship God ignorantly, those to whom the light is never
brought by human instrumentality, yet they will not perish. Though ignorant of the written law of God, they
have heard His voice speaking to them In nature, and have done the things that the law required. Their
works are evidence that the Holy Spirit has touched their hearts, and they are recognized as the children
of God.

"How surprised and gladdened will be the lowly among the nations, and among the heathen, to
hear from the lips of the Saviour, 'Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these My brethren,
ye have done it unto Me!' How glad will be the heart of Infinite Love as His followers look up with surprise
and joy at His words of approval."—Desire of Ages, 638.

"A t the last day the final decision by the Judge of all the earth will turn upon our interest in, and
practical labor for, the needy, the oppressed, the tempted. You cannot always pass these by on the other
side, and yourselves find entrance as redeemed sinners into the city of God."—Review and Herald,
November 30, 1886, p. 738.

"He has plainly stated that the decisions of the last day will turn upon the question of practical
benevolence."—Review and Herald, July, 11, 1899, p. 437.

"When the nations are gathered before Him, there will be but two classes, and their eternal destiny
will be determined by what they have done or have neglected to do for Him in the person of the poor and
suffering."—Desire of Ages, 637.

"All who have truly repented of sin, and by faith claimed the blood of Christ as their atoning
sacrifice, have had pardon entered against their names in the books of heaven; as they have become
partakers of the righteousness of Christ and their sins will be blotted out, and they themselves will be
accounted worthy of eternal life."—Great Controversy, 483.

"We have the precious promise that every sin, if sincerely repented of, will be forgiven. To turn to
God with contrition of soul, claiming the merits of the blood of Christ will bring to us light, pardon, and
peace. But we must turn to the Lord with full purpose of heart, with a decision to be doers of the words of
Christ. Our past sins will sometimes come to mind, and cast a shadow over our faith, so that we can see
nothing but merited punishment in store for us. But at such times, while we feel sorrow for sin, we should
look to Jesus and believe that He has pardoned our transgressions."—Review and Herald, January 13,
1891, p. 17.

"The One who has stood as our intercessor; who hears all penitential prayers and confessions;
who is represented with a rainbow, the symbol of grace and love, encircling His head is soon to cease His
work in the heavenly sanctuary. Grace and mercy will then descend from the throne and justice will take
their place. He for whom His people have looked will assume His right the office of Supreme Judge." 7
Bible Commentary, 989.

"The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son. He hath given Him
authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of man. . .

"God designed that the Prince of sufferers in humanity should be judge of the whole world. He who
came from the heavenly courts to save men from eternal death; He whom men despised, rejected, and
upon whom they heaped all the contempt of which human beings inspired by Satan, are capable; He who
submitted to be arraigned before an earthly tribunal, and who suffered the ignominious death of the cross
He alone is to pronounce the sentence of reward or of punishment.. .

"In that day of final punishment and reward, both saints and sinners will recognize in Him who was
crucified, the Judge of all living."—Review and Herald, November 22, 1898, p. 745. "There is only one
Judge, the One who died for us who took upon Himself our nature and all the infirmities of humanity, that
we might stand on vantage-ground with God." Review and Herald, January 19, 1905, p. 9.

"The Father is not the Judge. The angels are not. He who took humanity upon Himself, and in this
world lived a perfect life, is to judge us. He only can be our Judge. Will you remember this, brethren? Will
you remember it, ministers? Will you remember it, fathers and mothers? Christ took humanity that He
might be our Judge." 9 Testimonies, 185.

"What a solemn scene it will be! What a reckoning will have to be made for nailing to the cross One
who came to our world as a living epistle of the law. God will ask each one the question, What have you
done with my only-begotten Son? What will those answer who have refused to accept the truth? They will
be obliged to say, 'We hated Jesus and cast Him out." 5 Bible Commentary, 1106-1107.'

"When Judgment shall sit, and the books shall be opened, there will be many astonishing
disclosures. . . Secret sins will then be laid open to the view of all. Motives and intentions which have been
hidden in the dark chambers of the heart will be revealed. Designing ambitions selfish purposes will be
seen where the outward appearance told only of a desire to honor God, and to do good to men. . .
Hypocritical, ambitious teachers may now be admired and exalted by men; but God, who knows the
secrets of the heart will strip off the deceptive covering, and reveal them as they are. Every hypocrite will
be unmasked. Review and Herald, January 1, 1884, p. 2.

"1 n that solemn and awful hour the unfaithfulness of the husband will be opened to the wife, and
the unfaithfulness of the wife, to the husband. Parents will then learn, for the first time, what was the real
character of their children." Review and Herald, March 27,1888, p. 194.

"The fruit of every selfish, arbitrary exaction will be made plain, and men will see the results of their
doings even as God sees them."—Testimonies to Ministers, 224. [See also Life Sketches, 241-242}.

"The judgment scene will take place in the presence of all the worlds; for in this judgment the
government of God will be vindicated, and His law will stand forth as 'holy, and just, and good: Then every
case will be decided, and sentence will be passed upon all. Sin will not then appear attractive, but will be
seen in all its hideous magnitude." 7 Bible Commentary, 986.

"When speaking to congregations, there is always before me the final judgment, which is to be held
in the presence of the world, when the law of God's government is to be vindicated, His name glorified, His
wisdom acknowledged and testified of as just to believers and unbelievers. This is not the judgment of one
person, not of a nation, but of a whole world of intelligent beings, of all orders, of all characters. The
judgment takes place first upon the dead, then upon the living, then the whole universe will be assembled
to hear the sentence. I feel as if I were in the presence of the whole universe of heaven, bearing my
message for time and for eternity."

"In the day of final judgment, every lost soul will understand the nature of his own rejection of truth.
The cross will be presented, and its real bearing will be seen by every mind that has been blinded by
transgression. Before the vision of Calvary with its mysterious Victim, sinners will stand condemned. Every
lying excuse will be swept away. Human apostasy will appear in its heinous character. Men will see what
their choice has been. Every question of truth and error in the long-standing controversy will then have
been made plain. In the judgment of the universe, God will stand clear of blame for the existence or
continuance of evil. It will be demonstrated that the divine decrees are not accessory to sin. There was no
defect in God's government, no cause for disaffection. When the thoughts of all hearts shall be revealed,
both the loyal and the rebellious will unite in declaring, 'Just and true are Thy ways, Thou King of saints.
Who shall not fear Thee, Oh Lord, and glorify Thy name? . . for Thy judgments are made manifest: "Desire
of Ages, 58. [Revelation 15: 3, 4}.

SECTION THIRTY-THREE
THE RECORD BOOKS
"The book of life contains the names of all who have ever entered the service of God. Jesus bade
His disciples: 'Rejoice, because your names are written in heaven: Luke 10: 20. Paul speaks of his faithful
fellow workers, 'whose names are in the book of life: Philippians 4:3. Daniel, looking down to 'a time of
trouble, such as never was: declares that God's people shall be delivered, 'everyone that shall enter the
city of God whose names 'are written in the Lamb's book of life: Daniel 2:1; Revelation 2:27. Great
Controversy, pp. 480, 481.

"The names of all those who have once given themselves to God are written in the book of life, and
their characters are now passing in review before Him.—Historical Sketches of SDA Missions, p. 138; 7
Bible Commentary, p. 960.

" 'A book of remembrance' is written before God, in which are recorded the good deeds of 'them
that feared the Lord, and that thought upon His name: Malachi 3 :16. Great Controversy, p. 481.

"The book of death contains the evil deeds of the wicked.—Early Writings, p. 52. "How solemn is
the thought! Day after day, passing into eternity, bears its burden of records for the books of heaven.
Great Controversy, p. 486.

"God judges every man according to his work. Not only does He judge, but He sums up, day by
day and hour by hour, our progress in well doing.—Review and Herald, May 16, 1899; 7 Bible
Commentary, p. 987.

"If your name is registered in the Lamb's book of life, then all will be well with you. Be ready and
anxious to confess your faults and forsake them, that your mistakes and sins may go beforehand to
judgment and be blotted out." 5 Testimonies, p. 331.

"Sins that have not been repented of and forsaken will not be pardoned and blotted out of the
books of record, but will stand to witness against the sinner in the day of God. Great Controversy, p. 486.

"Then by virtue of the atoning blood of Christ, the sins of all the truly penitent will be blotted from
the books of heaven. Thus the sanctuary will be freed, or cleansed, from the record of sin. . in the final
atonement the sins of the truly penitent are to be blotted from the records of heaven."—Patriarchs and
prophets, pp. 357, 358.

"Repent and be converted that your sins may he blotted out when the times of refreshing shall
come from the presence of the Lord." Acts 3 :19,20.

See the section, The Sanctuary is because of sin," for more quotations on this.

SECTION THIRTY-FOUR

THE STANDARD OF THE JUDGMENT

"The law of God is the standard by which the characters and the lives of men will be tested in the
judgment.—Great Controversy, p. 482. . "None need be deceived. The law of God is as sacred as His
throne, and by it every man who cometh into the world is to be judged."—Review and Herald, November
17,1885; 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1099.

"The law of God is the one great standard that will measure every man's character in the day of
God."—Review and Herald, June 10,1890; 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1146.

"None will be condemned for not heeding light and knowledge that they never had, and they could
not obtain. . The light that has shone in the soul, will condemn them in the judgment." Review and Herald,
November 25, 1884; 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1145.

"God's test of the heathen, who have not the light, and of those living where the knowledge of truth
and light has been abundant, is altogether different. He accepts from those in heathen lands a phase of
righteousness which does not require much where much has not been bestowed."—Manuscript 130,1899;
5 Bible Commentary, p. 1121.

"The books of heaven record the sins that would have been committed had there been opportunity.
God will bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing. By His law He measures the character of
every man." Signs of the Times, July 31, 1901; 5 Bible Commentary. p. 1085.

SECTION THIRTY-FIVE
OBEDIENCE BY FAITH
"It was a wonderful thing for God to create man, to make mind. He created him that every faculty
might be the faculty of His divine mind. The glory of God is to be revealed in the creating of man in God's
image, and in His redemption." Signs of the Times, May 32, 1896.

"We are God's workmanship, and His word declares that we are 'fearfully and wonderfully made.'
He has prepared this living habitation for the mind; it is 'curiously wrought: a temple which the Lord Himself
has fitted up for the indwelling of the Holy Spirit."—Healthful Living, p. 9.

"And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." Genesis 1:26. "Human beings. .
were a new and distinct order, made in the image of God. Review and Herald, June 25, 1908; Sons and
Daughters of God, p. 7.

"Man was to bear God's image, both in outward resemblance and in character. Christ alone is 'the
express image' of the Father; but man was formed in the likeness of God."—Patriarchs and Prophets, p.
45.
"Infinite love—how great it is! God made the world to enlarge heaven. He desires a larger family of
created intelligences."—Manuscript 78, 1901; 1 Bible Commentary, p. 1081.

"God created man for His own glory, that after test and trial the human family might become one
with the heavenly family. It was God's purpose to re-populate heaven with the human family, if they would
show themselves obedient to His every word."—Letter 91,1900; 1 Bible Commentary, p. 1082.

"The vacancies made in heaven by the fall of Satan and his angels will be filled by the redeemed of
the Lord." Watchman, November 7, 1905.

"Satan in his efforts to deceive and tempt our race had thought to frustrate the divine plan in man's
creation; but Christ now [in the Investigative Judgment] asks that this plan be carried into effect as if man
had never fallen. He asks for His people not only pardon and justification, full and complete, but a share in
His glory and a seat upon His throne.—Great Controversy, p. 484.

"A character formed according to the divine likeness is the only treasure that we can take from this
world to the next. Christ's Object Lessons, p. 332.

"To restore in man the image of his Maker, to bring him back to the perfection in which he was
created, to promote the development of body, mind, and soul that the divine purpose in His creation might
be realized—this was to be the work of redemption. This is to be the object of education, the great object
of life. Education, pp. 15, 16.

"To many, education means a knowledge of books, . . the object of education is to restore the
image of God in the soul. . "5 Testimonies, p. 322.

"Higher than the highest human thought can reach is God's ideal for His children. Godliness—
Godlikeness—is the goal to be reached."—Education, p. 18.

"Holiness must be inwrought in our character."—Testimonies to Ministers, p. 446.

"The very image of God is to be reproduced in humanity. The honor of God, the honor of Christ, is
involved in the perfection of the character of His people."—Desire of Ages, p. 671.

"God has bought us, and He claims a throne in each heart."—Special Testimonies, Series A., No.
7. p. 39; 6 Bible Commentary, p. 1088.

"The world is a workshop in which, through the cooperation of human and divine agencies, Jesus is
making experiments by His grace and divine mercy upon human hearts. Angels are amazed as they
behold the transformation of character brought about in those who yield themselves to God and to the
Lamb. They see those who are by nature the children of wrath, converted and becoming laborers together
with Christ in drawing souls to God. They see those who in darkness becoming lights to shine amid the
moral night of this wicked and perverse generation. They see them becoming prepared by a Christ-like
experience to suffer with their Lord, and afterward to be partakers with Him in His glory in heaven
above."—Testimonies to Ministers, pp. 49, 50.

"With pure, noble, upright deeds every man is to build. The result of his work will be a symmetrical
structure, a fair temple honored by God and men. Manuscript 153, 1903; 6 Bible Commentary, p. 1087.

"Everything in our character that cannot enter the city of God will be reproved; if we submit to the
Lord's refining, all the dross and the tin will be consumed." Letter 20a, 1893;4 Bible Commentary, p. 1181.

" 'Ye are God's building: You are representatives of the great Master worker. God forbid that we
should neglect the trade of character building. The course to be pursued in this work is not according to
the ideas of the world; the fashioning is not similar to the fashioning of the world. Those who enter the
work of God without hiding self in Christ will soon disconnect themselves from the Master's building."
Manuscript 163, 1902; 2 Bible Commentary, p. 1087.

"Christ was the Master-builder of His character." Manuscript 163, 1902; 2 Bible Commentary, p.
1018.

"Christ's teachings are to be to us as the leaves of the tree of life. As we eat and digest the bread
of life, we shall reveal a symmetrical character. By our unity, by esteeming others better than ourselves,
we are to bear to the world a living testimony of the power of the truth. . Their characters are composed of
that which the mind eats and drinks." Manuscript 112, 1898; 5 Bible Commentary. p. 1135. "The Lord our
Redeemer clothed His divinity with humanity, and wrought out in behalf of man a character that was
without spot or blemish. He planted His cross midway between heaven and earth, and made it the object
of attraction which reached both ways, drawing both Justice and Mercy across the gulf."—Manuscript 94,
1899; 7 Bible Commentary, p. 936.

"The loveliness of the character of Christ will be seen in His followers.—Steps to Christ, pp. 63,64.
"Position does not make the man. It is Christ formed within that makes a man worthy of receiving the
crown of life, that fadeth not away. 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1131. "It is God who gives us power to
overcome. Those who hear His voice and obey His commandments are enabled to form righteous
characters. Those who disregard His expressed commands will form characters like the propensities that
they indulge." Letter 44, 1903; 7 Bible Commentary, p. 943.

"The capability to appreciate the glories that 'eye hath not seen nor ear heard,' will be proportionate
to the attainments reached in the cultivation of the faculties in this life." Fundamentals of Christian
Education, p. 49; Christ's Object Lessons, p. 363.

"The happiness of the redeemed in heaven results from the character formed in this life after the
image of Christ." Letter Il, 1890;6 Bible Commentary, p. 1072.

"This I do know, that our churches are dying for the want of teaching on the subject of
righteousness by faith in Christ, and on kindred truths.—Gospel Workers, p. 301.

"Our hope is to be constantly strengthened by the knowledge that Christ is our righteousness. . The
meager views which so many have had of the exalted character hindered their progress in the divine life.
Personal religion among us as a people is at a low ebb. There is much form, much machinery, much
tongue religion, but something deeper and more solid must be brought into our religious experience."—5
Testimonies, pp. 742-744.

"Some will not make a right use of the doctrine of justification by faith. They will present it in a one-
side manner, making everything of faith and belittling works. Others will seize the points that have a
leaning toward error, and will ignore works altogether. Now genuine faith always works by love; it supplies
a motive power. Faith is not an opiate, but a stimulant. . Looking to Calvary will not quiet your souls into
nonperformance of duty, but will create faith that will work, purifying the soul from all selfishness. In laying
hold of Christ by faith we but just begin our work. Every man has corrupt and sinful habits., that must be
overcome through vigorous warfare. Every soul must fight the fight of faith."—Review and Herald, January
24, 1893.

"Faith and works are not dissevered." 6 Testimonies, p. 441.

"But faith is in no sense allied to presumption. Only he who has true faith is secure against
presumption. For presumption is Satan's counterfeit of faith. Faith claims God's promises, and brings forth
fruit in obedience. Presumption also claims the promises, but uses them as Satan did, to excuse
transgression."—Desire of Ages, p. 126.

"Said the Judge: 'All will be justified by their faith and judged by their works." 4 Testimonies, p. 386.

"But Abraham's faith was made manifest by his works. 'Was not Abraham our father justified by
works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar? Seest thou how faith wrought with his works,
and by works was faith made perfect?' James 2:23, 21, 22. There are many who fail to understand the
relation of faith and works. They say, 'Only believe in Christ, and you are safe. You have nothing to do with
keeping the law,' But genuine faith will be manifest in obedience,—"Patriarchs and Prophets, pp. 153, 154.

"After the fall of man, Satan declared that human beings were proved to be incapable of keeping
the law of God, and he sought to carry the universe with him in this belief. Satan's words appeared to be
true and Christ came to unmask the deceiver. The Majesty of Heaven undertook the cause of man, and
with the same facilities that man may obtain, withstood the temptations of Satan as man must withstand
them. This was the only way in which fallen man could become a partaker of the divine nature," 1 Selected
Messages, p. 252.

"Christ came to this world to counteract Satan's falsehood that God had made a law which men
could not keep. Taking humanity upon Himself, He came to this earth, and by a life of obedience showed
that God has not made a law that man cannot keep. He showed that it is possible for man perfectly to
obey the law. . Man is to show by his obedience that he could be trusted in heaven, that he would not
rebel,"—Manuscript 48, 1893; The Faith I Live By, p. 114.

"Satan had asserted that man could not keep the commandments of God. To prove that they could
Christ became man, and lived the life of perfect obedience. . through divine power,"—Signs of the Times,
May 10,1899.

"Christ left His position in the heavenly courts, and came to this earth to live the life of human
beings. This sacrifice He made in order to show that Satan's charge against God is false—that it is
possible for man to obey the laws of God's kingdom,"—Letter 32, 1899; 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1129.

"The circumstances connected with this baptismal scene were of the greatest interest to Satan. He
knew then for a certainty that unless he could overcome Christ, from thenceforth there would be a limit to
his power. He understood that this communication from the throne of God signified that heaven was now
more directly accessible to man than it had been, and the most intense hatred was aroused in his breast.
When Satan led man to sin, he hoped that God's abhorrence of sin would forever separate Him from man,
and break the connecting link between heaven and earth. When from the opening heavens he heard the
voice of God addressing His Son, it was to him as the sound of a death knell. It told him that now God was
about to unite men more closely to Himself, and give moral power to overcome temptation."—Signs of the
Times, August 4, 1887; 5 Bible Commentary, p. 1078.

"The sins of Israel being thus transferred to the sanctuary [during the daily ministration] , the Holy
Places were defiled, and a special work became necessary for the removal of sins. God commanded that
an atonement be made for each of the apartments, as for the altar, to cleanse it, and hallow it from the
uncleanness of the children of Israel," Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.

"For on that day shall the priest make an atonement for you, to cleanse you, that ye may be clean
from all your sins before the Lord. . And he shall make an atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall
make an atonement for the tabernacle of the congregation, and for the altar, and He shall make an
atonement for the priests, and for all the people of Israel for all their sins once a year,"—Leviticus 16:30,
33, 34.

"Till the present day the orthodox Jew in all parts of the world calls the ten days prior to the Day of
Atonement, from the first day of the seventh month to the tenth day of the same month, 'the ten days of
repentance,' These are preparatory days to the solemn day of atonement,"—F. C. Gilbert, Messiah in His
Sanctuary, p. 61.

"Every man was to afflict his soul while the work of atonement was going forward. All business was
laid aside, and the whole congregation of Israel spent the day in solemn humiliation before God, with
prayer, fasting, and deep searching of heart." Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 355.

"In the great day of final atonement and investigative judgment the only cases considered are
those of the professed people of God. The judgment of the wicked is a distinct and separate work, and
takes place at a later period." Great Controversy, p. 480.

"At the time appointed for the judgment—the close of the 2300 days, in 1844began the work of
investigation and blotting out of sins. All who have ever taken upon themselves the name of Christ must
pass its searching scrutiny. Both the living and the dead are to be judged 'out of those things which were
written in the books, according to their works.' "Great Controversy, p. 486.

The issues that need to be dealt with are too serious for half-way measures. It will require
wholehearted dedication to our Bible-Spirit of Prophecy teachings, if any of us are to traverse the Crisis
ahead and shout the victory at the coming of Christ in the clouds of heaven. Those who think the truth
unworthy to defend are not worthy of having it.

"By harmonious action with God in His great plan, he [the Christian] will fill his appointed place. He
will bring himself back, through the grace of God given him, to the perfection of Christ's character. Uplifted
himself, through the grace of God, he is prepared to uplift by his own transformation of character his fellow
men both by precept and by example. . "This probationary life is given to bring man back to this perfection
which is to be the character of all who shall be saved. The Law of God is a reflection of His character,"
Letter 46, March 22,1900 (in This Day With God).

"Those only who heed his warnings will know of a certainty that they are walking in the way of the
Lord. The heart and the life must be right if we would understand His purposes, and walk in fellowship with
the Holy Spirit," Boulder Colorado Sanitarium, October 2, 1905.

"In perfect obedience is found perfect joy," Series B, No. 2.

"Are we seeking for His fullness, ever reaching higher and higher, trying to attain to the perfection
of His character? When God's servants reach this point, they will be sealed in their foreheads. The
recording angel will declare, 'It is done,' They will be complete in Him whose they are by creation and by
redemption." Bible Training School, October 8, 1899. (Partially in Our High Calling, p 150).

"God requires obedience, not for the purpose of showing His authority, but that we may become
one with Him in character," Series B, No. 7.

"Those who walk by faith are all the time seeking for perfection of character by constant obedience
to Christ." Review, April 9, 1889.

"There is no such thing as an impossibility to obey God. No man can be so situated that he cannot
obey God.—Life of Paul, p. 298,296.

"When we know God as it is our privilege to know Him, our life will be a life of continual
obedience."—Desire of Ages, p. 668.

"For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am
holy." Leviticus 11: 44.

"Ye shall be holy: for I the Lord your God am holy." Leviticus 19: 2. "That ye may remember, and
do all my commandments, and be holy unto your God." Numbers 15:4041. "Then will I sprinkle clean water
upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new
heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of
