something can be built upon and possible improved.

Why evaluate your navigation program?

Evaluations are increasingly important for a variety of
reasons.

Evaluations can:

o Provide information such as the effects,

potential limitations, or apparent strengths of
the program.
o Determine the need of continued training
o Indicate the program’s impact on participants
o Discover problems or needs early to prevent
more serious problems later
o Recommend improvements for the future
o Ensure quality
 Build client confidence about participating, or using the program.
o Inform staff about the program
 Participating staff gain knowledge and understanding of the
program
 In addition, they learn how to conduct an effective evaluation and
may be more willing to facilitate future evaluations themselves.
o Assist in prioritising resources by identifying program components that
are most effective or critical.
o Help in the planning and delivery of organisational actions by providing
diagnostic information before any future action is taken

Self-evaluation and reflection will enable you to refine your skills

and identify areas for improvement. Through feedback,
evaluations and reflection an individual can obtain an accurate
picture of their performance, strengths and weaknesses.

Engage in Self-evaluation and Reflection:

The individual can reflect on their abilities in a number of ways.

Some of these are shown below:

• Asking critical questions about your own ability, what did not work, and how the
relationship building process can be improved.
• Reviewing records and journals and critically evaluating your own performance.
• Reviewing feedback from learners, colleagues and identifying critical aspects and
areas for improvement.
• Seek feedback from industry experts
• Comparing your practice to industry standards.
• Comparing your practice to colleagues.
• Analysing statistical data on the success rate for individuals with regard to the
performance and post performance.

These through feedback, evaluations and reflection an individual can obtain an accurate
picture of their performance, strengths and weaknesses.

Improve your skills and performance:

A professional development plan for an individual should contain learning activities to be
undertaken to address the identified areas for improvement.

These learning activities could include:

• Completing additional training
• Attending relevant conferences
• Seek feedback from industry experts
• Research reading materials to increase depth of knowledge
• Mentoring from a more senior colleague
• Networking with peers
• Observing and assisting more senior colleagues

Assessment at the end of any learning activities should determine the intended
outcomes have been achieved. If gaps are identified additional learning activities will
need to be planned. Self-evaluation and reflection on your practices should be a
continuous process.

Psychological Impacts:
Individuals that are involved in the Sport and Recreation, Outdoor Recreation, Health
and Safety, First Aid industries may come into contact with critical incidents.

These incidents may have possible psychological impacts on:

• A casualty

• A rescuer

• A bystander

• Other participants

It is important to be aware that different incidents can have different impacts on different
individuals, and not everyone will react the same.

It would be advantageous for an organisation to

provide/offer counselling services for individuals to
reflect, evaluate the incident/situation they were
involved in.
