Operations with Functions

Two functions can be added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided to form a new function. For the
new function, the domain consists of the intersection of the domains of the two functions, excluding the
values that make a denominator equal to zero.

Example 1 Given f(x) = x2 – x – 6 and g(x) = x + 2, find each function and its domain.

𝒇
a. (f + g)(x) (b) (𝒈)(x)

𝟏
Example 2 Given f(x) = x2 – 3 and g(x) = 𝒙, find each function and its domain.

a. (f – g)(x) (b) (𝑓 • 𝑔)(x)

Let’s try it!

𝑓
Find (f + g)(x), (f – g)(x), (𝑓 • 𝑔)(x), and (𝑔)(x) for each f(x) and g(x). State the domain of the new
function.
𝟐
1. f(x) = x2 – 1, g(x) = 𝒙 2. f(x) = x2 + 4x – 7, g(x) = √𝒙

Gallery Walk Activity (Pair)

g(x) = √𝑥

Group B

f(x) = x2 + 5x + 6
g(x) = x + 2
Group C

3
f(x) = 8 – x
g(x) = x – 3

Group D

f(x) = x – 9
g(x) = x + 5
Group E

f(x) = x + 4x
g(x) = 3x
