2 INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
2.1 Introduction
This section provides the equipment information for installing the GMU 44B and related optional
accessories. Installation of the GMU 44B must follow the data detailed in this manual. Cabling is
typically fabricated by the installing agency to fit each particular aircraft. Always follow acceptable
avionics installation practices per advisory circulars AC 43.13-1B and AC 43.13-2B or later FAA
approved revisions.
2.2 Installation Materials Required but not Supplied
Rack mounting hardware - Quantity of 3 #6 Flathead 100° CSK Brass Screws (MS24693BB or other
approved brass fastener)
Harness - See Table 3-3
2.3 Special Tools Required
Refer to Table 3-2 for pin contact crimping tool and associated hardware.
2.4 Cabling and Wiring
Wiring must be installed in accordance with AC 43.13-1B Chapter 11, Sections 8 through 13. The
following issues must be addressed:
• Do not expose cabling and wiring to chafing
• Do not route cabling and wiring harnesses near flight cables
• Do not route cabling and wiring near high-energy sources. (e.g. DC motors, high heat sources)
• Wiring indicated as shielded in Appendix B must be shielded
2.5 Shielding and Electrical Bonding Considerations
Electrical equipment, supporting brackets, and racks must be electrically bonded to the aircraft’s main
structure or a designated aircraft groundplane. Refer to the following documents for applicable bonding
techniques.:
• AC 43.13-1B CHG 1, "Acceptable Methods, Techniques, and Practices - Aircraft Inspection and
Repair", Chapter 11, "Aircraft Electrical Systems"
• SAE ARP 1870A, "Aerospace Systems Electrical Bonding and Grounding for Electromagnetic
Compatibility and Safety"
• A bonding procedure developed and supplied by the aircraft manufacturer (if available)
The electrical bond must achieve direct current (DC) resistance less than or equal to 2.5 milliohms to local
structure where the equipment is mounted. Compliance must be verified by inspection using a calibrated
milliohm meter.
2.6 Cooling Requirements or Considerations
The GMU 44B has no cooling requirements or considerations.

Rev. 4 Page 2-1
2.7 Mounting Requirements
The following guidelines describe proper mechanical installation of the Garmin GMU 44B Magnetometer.
The guidelines include requirements for proper location selection in the aircraft, requirements for
supporting structure and mechanical alignment and restriction on nearby equipment.
The post-installation calibration procedures required before flight are described in Section 4.

GMU 44B RACK

Figure 2-1 Mounting Rack
2.7.1 GMU 44B Magnetometer Mounting
The GMU 44B is an extremely sensitive three-axis magnetic sensor. It is more sensitive to nearby
magnetic disturbances than a flux gate magnetometer. For this reason, when choosing a mounting location
for the GMU 44B, use the recommended distances from objects or devices that can disturb the magnetic
field listed in Table 2-1.
Table 2-1 Recommended Distance from Magnetic Disturbances

Disturbance Source* Minimum Distance from GMU 44B

Electric motors and relays, including servo motors 10 feet (3.0 meters)
Ferromagnetic structure greater than 1 kg total (iron, steel, or
8.2 feet (2.5 meters)
cobalt materials, especially landing gear structure)
Ferromagnetic materials less than 1 kg total, such as control
3 feet (1.0 meter)
cables
Any electrical device drawing more than 100 mA current 3 feet (1.0 meter)
Electrical conductors passing more than 100 mA current
3 feet (1.0 meter)
[should be twisted shielded pair if within 10 feet (3.0 meters)]
Electrical devices drawing less than 100 mA current 2 feet (0.6 meter)

2 feet (0.6 meter)
(e.g. installed flux gates, even if not powered)
Electrical conductors passing less than 100 mA current

*A second installed GMU 44B is not to be considered as a disturbance source

190-02129-00 GMU 44B Installation Manual

Rev. 4 Page 2-2
Ensure that any electrical conductor that comes within 10 feet (3.0 meters) of the GMU 44B is installed as
a twisted shielded pair, not a single-wire conductor. (If possible, the shield should be grounded at both
ends.)
Use nonmagnetic materials and brass screws to mount the GMU 44B, and replace any magnetic fasteners
within 0.5 meter with nonmagnetic equivalents (e.g. replace zinc-plated steel screws used to mount wing
covers or wingtips with nonmagnetic stainless steel screws.)
In general, wing or tail mounting of the GMU 44B magnetometer is strongly preferred. Fuselage mounting
is strongly discouraged because of numerous potential disturbances that interfere with accurate operation.
For installations with dual GMU 44B magnetometers, co-locating the two magnetometers close to each
other in the tail or in one wing is recommended as this reduces the likelihood of heading splits or
miscompares when operating on the ground in the vicinity of local magnetic anomalies.
Mechanical mounting fixtures for the GMU 44B must be rigidly connected to the aircraft structure. Use of
typical aircraft-grade materials and methods for rigid mounting of components is acceptable, so long as
adequate measures are taken to ensure a stiffened mounting structure.
The GMU 44B must be oriented so the sticker marked TOP is facing up.
Align the GMU 44B mounting rack to within 3.0° of the aircraft level reference in pitch and roll.
The GMU 44B must be mounted with its mounting rack’s forward direction aligned in heading to within
2.5° with the forward longitudinal direction of the aircraft. Furthermore, alignment to within 0.5° with the
forward longitudinal direction of the aircraft is strongly preferred. If alignment in heading to within 0.5° is
not possible, it is strongly recommended to complete the post-installation heading offset procedure which
is described in Section 4.
It is strongly preferred the GMU 44B alignment is within 0.5° of the aircraft forward longitudinal
direction, rather than using the heading offset procedure.
2.7.1.1 Consideration for Wing Grounded Lighting Fixtures
The following installation practices are recommended when installing the GMU 44B in a wing.
1. The wing tip lights should not have a power ground referenced to the chassis of the light assembly
that would then be referenced back to the airframe ground through the light assembly mounting.
2. A dedicated power ground should be used and returned as a twisted pair with the power source
back into the fuselage for a wing mounted GMU 44B.
These installation practices will prevent magnetically interfering currents from flowing in the wing skin
that encloses the GMU 44B. Electrically isolating the light assembly should not be used as an alternative
to item 1 above, unless the isolated light assembly has been analyzed for adequate protection against direct
attachment of lightning.
2.7.1.2 GMU 44B Location Survey Tool
Refer to “AHRS/Magnetometer Installation Considerations” (190-01051-00) for details regarding the
determination/verification of GMU 44B location using the software program GLS (Garmin Location
Survey) Survey Tool. 190-01051-00 contains information that is generally applicable but not specific to
any particular airframe and is available from the Dealer Resource Center at www.garmin.com.

Rev. 4 Page 2-3
2.7.1.3 Location Degaussing and Magnetic Changes
The following GMU 44B installation location changes require repeating the magnetometer calibration
procedure and/or the heading offset compensation procedure described in Section 4.2.
• Any degaussing of the area near the GMU 44B mounting location requires repeating the
magnetometer calibration procedure, and if recommended initially, the heading offset
compensation procedure.
• The addition, removal, or modification of components that are ferrous, or otherwise magnetic,
within 10.0 feet of the GMU 44B magnetometer location after the magnetometer interference test
or magnetometer calibration procedure were completed requires a repeat of both procedures.
• Electrical changes to the installation that affect components within 10.0 feet of the GMU 44B
magnetometer after the magnetometer calibration and magnetometer interference procedures were
completed will require a repeat of the magnetometer interference test. If new magnetic
interference is detected, it must be resolved and then the magnetometer calibration procedure must
be repeated. Wiring or grounding changes associated with a device located in the same wing as the
GMU 44B is an example of such a change.

3 INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
3.1 Unpacking Unit
Carefully unpack the equipment and make a visual inspection of the unit for evidence of damage incurred
during shipment. If the unit is damaged, notify the carrier and file a claim. To justify a claim, save the
original shipping container and all packing materials. Do not return the unit to Garmin until the carrier has
authorized the claim.
Retain the original shipping containers for storage. If the original containers are not available, a separate
cardboard container should be prepared that is large enough to accommodate sufficient packing material to
prevent movement.
3.2 Wiring Harness Installation
All electrical connections to the GMU 44B Magnetometer are made through a 6-pin connector
(Figure 6-1). Tables in Section 6 define the electrical characteristics of all input and output signals.
Required connector and associated hardware are supplied in the GMU 44B connector kit (011-04205-00).
See Appendix B for interconnect wiring diagrams.

CAUTION
Check wiring connections for errors before inserting connectors into the GMU 44B

1. Strip jacket and shield:

a) On one end of each shielded cable (items 7 and 8), strip back approximately 1.6 inches of jacket
to expose the shield. Use caution when cutting the jacket to avoid damaging the individual
braids of the shield.
b) Trim away approximately 1.3 inches of shield, leaving approximately 0.3 inches of shield. Fold
this remaining shield back over the jacket.
2. Connect shield extension wires:
a) Cut one 22 AWG shield extension wire (item 2) approximately 1.9 inches long so the end of the
shield extension wire lines up with the end of the previously prepared shielded cable (item 7)
from step 1.
b) Strip back approximately 0.25 inches of insulation from one end of the shield extension wire
(item 2 of previous step a).
c) Cut a second 22 AWG shield extension wire (item 3) approximately 2.0” long.

e) Connect the shield extension wire to the previously prepared shields using an approved shield
termination technique. AC 43-13 may be a helpful reference.
Preferred Method:
i) Slide a solder sleeve (item 1) onto the prepared cable assembly and shrink using a heat gun.
The chosen size of solder sleeve must accommodate the number of conductors present in
the cable assembly. Reference the following MIL-Specs for 2-conductor and 3-conductor
solder sleeves (M83519/1-2, M83519/1-3).
Secondary Method:
i) Solder the prepared cable assembly. Ensure a solid electrical connection through the use of
acceptable soldering practices.
ii) Slide a piece of shrink tube (item 1) onto the prepared wire assembly and shrink using a
heat gun. The chosen size of shrink tube must accommodate the number of conductors
present in the cable.

b) Use a cable tie (item 9) to secure the cables to the strain relief.

3.4 Equipment Mounting

3.4.1 Rack Installation
After ensuring that Section 2.7 requirements are met, install the GMU 44B mounting rack according to the
dimensions given in Appendix A. See Section 2.2 for rack mounting hardware.
3.4.2 Unit Insertion and Removal
Mount the GMU 44B to the mounting rack aligning the forward arrow on the GMU 44B with the forward
arrow in the mounting rack, tighten the mounting screws to 7-9 in-lbs of torque.
It is recommended a cable tie is inserted in the slot of GMU 44B connector to lock the connector latching
button. See Figure A-1 and Figure A-2 for the connector cable tie slot location and dimensions.
When removing the GMU 44B, disconnect the connector by cutting and removing the cable tie in the
connector slot (if present). Then push the GMU 44B connector latching button and pull on the aircraft
harness connector to disconnect the connector, see Figure 3-5.

If the GMU 44B is removed, the anti-rotation properties of the mounting screws must be restored. This
may be done by replacing the screws with new Garmin PN 211-60037-08. If original screws must be re-
used, coat screw threads with Loctite 242 (blue) thread-locking compound, Garmin PN 291-00023-02, or
equivalent.

NOTE
The GMU 44B must be mounted so the pitch offset relative to the GRS 7800,
GSU 75, or GRS 79 mounting is less than 6.0 degrees. Likewise, the roll offset of the
GMU 44B mounting relative to the GRS 7800, GSU 75, or GRS 79 mounting should also
be less than 6.0 degrees. The GMU 44B must be oriented so the sticker marked TOP is
facing up. Failure to meet these specifications may result in a failed magnetometer
calibration.

NOTE
Mounting screws must be brass.
