    ¿De qué color es?


    What is its color?

    rojo/roja verde marrón rosado/rosada


    red green maroon pink

    amarillo/amarilla gris rubio/rubia claro/clara


    yellow gray blond/blonde clear (colorless)

    azul pardo/parda blanco/blanca oscuro/oscura


    blue brown white dark (murky)

    negro/negra castaño/castaña violeta moreno/morena


    Black reddish brown violet brunet/brunette

    ¿Qué es esto? Esto es la cama. ¿De qué color es la cama? Es blanca.


    What is this? This is the bed. What is the color of the bed? It is white.

    La muchacha es rubia. Su pelo es rubio. Sus ojos son azules


    The girl is blonde. Her hair is blond. Her eyes are blue.

    El cielo es azul. El mar es azul. El agua es clara.


    The sky is blue. The sea is blue. The water is clear.

    ¿De qué color es el cielo? ¿De qué color es el mar? ¿De qué color es el agua?
    What is the color of the sky? What is the color of the sea? What is the color of water?

    Notes: Nouns and adjectives (such as color) are either masculine or feminine. Adjectives agree with
    the noun they modify both in gender and number (cama blanca, camas blancas; libro blanco,
    libros blancos).

    Su has been discussed in the previous lesson. Its plural form is sus and it means his/her/your
    (plural) e.g. su camisa – his shirt; sus camisas – his shirts. Remember that it is an adjective
    (relative adjective) and so it should agree with the noun it modifies.

    You might notice that es means is and son means are. These are just two of the many conjugations
    of the verb ser which means to be. For now, just remember es – is; son – are. These will be
    discussed further in future lessons.

    Exercises: Translate the following into simple Spanish.

    1. The horses are brown. (horse-caballo; use castaño for brown)


    2. The water is murky. It is not clear.
    3. The wall is white, it is not yellow.
    4. The pencil is yellow and the pen is red.
    5. What is the color of his eyes? His eyes are brown.
    6. The shirt is green, it is not blue.
    7. The handkerchief is white, it is not black.
    8. Your hair is black, it is not gray.
    9. The box is red and the window is pink.
    10. What is the color of your bag? It is green.
