The Role of Enzymes in Metabolic Pathways

Without enzymes there can be no life because they are employed in metabolic processes;

they are facilitators of biochemical processes. Metabolic pathways are defined as chemical

processes that occur in cells of living organisms and implied by a definite sequence of

transformations involving substrates and yielding specified products. There are two types of

metabolic pathways: catabolic, in which the body disassembles chemical substances into simpler

substances that provide energy, and the anabolic (Campbell & Farrell, 2020).

Enzymes catalyze these reactions because they reduce the energy that is required in order

to precipitate a chemical reaction. They do so in order to increase the rate of reactions that would

otherwise occur at rates that are too low to support life. This specificity is particularly important

for the regulation of metabolic pathways since, in many cases, every enzyme catalyzes a distinct

substrate to maintain accuracy in biochemical reactions (Berg et al., 2019).

Furthermore, enzymes are involved in rate control of metabolic sequences by agencies,

including allosteric control and feedback inhibition. Finally, in allosteric regulation, the

molecules bind to another site of the enzyme, not the active site, and this binding will change the

shape and function of the enzyme. This enables cells to make specific adjustments in the

metabolic flow depending on its requirements. While feedback inhibition is stopping the

accumulation of more intermediates and products and making sure that the metabolic ratio is at

an optimal level (Nelson & Cox, 2017).

In conclusion, they are part of the systematic controlling of metabolic pathways in cells

and immensely influence the rate of cellular metabolic reactions so as to enable synchronization

of events in the body. This is important in biology since without such proteins, the necessary

biochemical reactions that are essential
