Dash V5.3 Software Download Procedure
PN 2000966-341
V5.3 software has added software support for the 128 Mb flash. V5.3 software is
compatible with both the old and new CPU boards 801424-004 and 801424-005.
Introduction
These service instructions describe how to install Dash 3000/4000 version 5.3
software using one of the following installation configurations:
PC or PC laptop connected to a monitor
PC or PC laptop connected to the Unity Network®
Clinical Information Center (CIC) networked to monitor(s)
GE Medical Systems Information Technologies software is tested for backward
compatibility. To find out if new software is available or if compatibility issues
exist, call GE Medical Systems Information Technologies technical support at
1-800-558-7044.
Installation Requirements
The monitor must be running software version 2B or later to install version 5.3. If
your monitor is not using software version 2B or later, contact your local sales
representative for software upgrade information.
To identify the current software version, select MORE MENUS > MONITOR
SETUP > REVISION AND ID > SOFTWARE REVISION DISPLAY. Verify the
software version listed for MAIN SW is 2B or later.
The following lists the minimum requirements for equipment used in this upgrade.
PC to monitor or Unity Network:
One Dash 3000/4000 version 5.3 software CD-ROM.
Microsoft® Windows® 2000, Windows NT™ or Windows 98 (with
service pack 3 or later) operating system
CD drive
Network card
Pentium II processor
64 MB of RAM
Ethernet cable (PN 408997-001), standard category 5 network patch cable
or category 5 crossover cable (PN 415480-001)
CIC to monitor(s):
One Dash 3000/4000 version 5.3 software CD-ROM.
Clinical Information Center (CIC) networked with the monitors that
require the software installation.
WARNING
There is a temporary loss of monitoring functions throughout various parts
of the monitoring system until the install is complete on each monitor in the
system. Medical staff should be prepared to cover patients in need during
these periods of lost monitoring functions.
Before you begin the installation, inform an appropriate, responsible member of the
site’s staff that you are installing new software on the monitor(s) so they may take
appropriate action.
Before you begin recording defaults, obtain a copy of the current Unit Defaults
from clinical or biomedical staff. If this information is not available, use the
factory defaults from the “Dash 3000/4000 Patient Monitor Operator’s
Manual.”
If there are only a few default changes, use the factory default sheets to record
the site’s custom defaults instead of the blank Monitor Defaults Worksheet.
You may want to make additional copies of the “Custom Defaults and Enabled
Software Options Worksheet” and “Monitor Defaults Worksheet” for each
monitor.
2. Fill out the “Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet”
before you continue to the next step. This worksheet is located at the end of this
document.
CAUTION
CONNECT THE EQUIPMENT TO AN AC POWER SOURCE — The
monitor and PC should use a reliable power source during the installation
process. Do NOT use battery power during the install. A battery failure
during the install process may result in an update process failure.
If a failure occurs while any boot code components are loading, full or
partial monitoring capability is lost. The monitor is rendered useless and
requires service by a manufacturer technical support engineer.
PC Download
To connect to a monitor with a PC or PC laptop, follow the procedure below.
CAUTION
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE — Do not perform simultaneous downloads on
monitors networked on the Unity Network. Performing more than one
download at a time could cause an update process failure that damages
your monitor.
1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable (networked monitors) or crossover cable
(non-networked monitors) to the PC network card.
2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable or crossover cable.
For networked monitors, connect the Ethernet cable to the Unity Network
(Ethernet) wall tap.
For non-networked monitors, connect the crossover cable to the monitor’s
ETHERNET connector.
3. Power on the PC.
4. Power on the monitor.
5. Continue with the instructions, “Change the IP Address” on page 4.
CAUTION
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE — Do not perform more than 4 simultaneous
downloads on monitors networked on the CIC. Performing more than 4
simultaneous downloads could cause an update process failure that
damages your monitor.
To connect to the CIC for a network download, follow the procedure below.
1. Make sure the monitor is connected to the CIC via a Unity Network connection.
2. Write down the CIC CARE UNIT NAME and NUMBER. __________________

CAUTION
Do NOT reboot or power cycle the monitor while downloading the boot
code or you could render the monitor useless until it can be serviced by a
manufacturing technical support engineer.
NOTE
If you can see the download files but are unable to download the software,
ensure that your Cisco Systems VPN and firewall protections are stopped. See
the instructions on how to stop BlackICE and Cisco VPN in the section
“Change the IP Address” on page 4.
1. From the monitor, select the appropriate boot code for the current software:
If running software version 2x, select the load_1st_boot_v2.scr file name.
If running software version 3A or later, select the
load_1st_boot_v3_or_later.scr file name.

select YES.
4. The monitor reboots after the file is successfully installed.
Ignore this message and continue to download the second software file following the
procedure below.
NOTE
The Masimo DAS code will download into the monitor when the monitor has
the following installed:
Verify Defaults
NOTE
The Dash version 5 software installation provides additional defaults.
After the installation is complete, verify all the defaults you had before the
installation are still in effect. Refer to the defaults you recorded on the “Custom
Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” and “Monitor Defaults”
worksheets. Or, refer to the defaults you printed out. Check the second table column
of the “Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” for each default
when you complete your verification.
If any custom defaults are different, make the appropriate changes to restore the
default to the site’s preferred setting.
If you plan on transferring the defaults from one monitor to another, verify all the
monitor defaults on the master monitor. You only need to verify the active defaults
on the monitor(s) receiving the defaults.
For instructions to transfer monitor defaults, refer to the “Dash 3000/4000 Service
Manual.”
