(Software Version 5.3)

What’s In This Release

The new Dash CPU board 801424-005 is being released as part of the Dash V5.3
project. This new CPU board has new 128 Mb flash memory chips 2020771-001
that replace obsolete 64 Mb flash chips 2008961-001.

compatible with both the old and new CPU boards 801424-004 and 801424-005.

Introduction
These service instructions describe how to install Dash 3000/4000 version 5.3
software using one of the following installation configurations:
„ PC or PC laptop connected to a monitor
„ PC or PC laptop connected to the Unity Network®
„ Clinical Information Center (CIC) networked to monitor(s)
GE Medical Systems Information Technologies software is tested for backward
compatibility. To find out if new software is available or if compatibility issues
exist, call GE Medical Systems Information Technologies technical support at
1-800-558-7044.
Installation Requirements
The monitor must be running software version 2B or later to install version 5.3. If
your monitor is not using software version 2B or later, contact your local sales
representative for software upgrade information.

To identify the current software version, select MORE MENUS > MONITOR
SETUP > REVISION AND ID > SOFTWARE REVISION DISPLAY. Verify the
software version listed for MAIN SW is 2B or later.

NOTE
„ If you are using a PC laptop with a docking station, remove the laptop from the
docking station before you begin the installation.
„ If you are using a wireless network connection, remove the wireless network
card from the PC or PC laptop before you begin the installation.
„ If you are using a Dash Port 2 or Dash Docking Station, remove the Dash 3000/
4000 from the Dash Port 2 or Docking Station before you begin the installation.

Prepare for the Software Installation

WARNING
There is a temporary loss of monitoring functions throughout various parts
of the monitoring system until the install is complete on each monitor in the
system. Medical staff should be prepared to cover patients in need during
these periods of lost monitoring functions.

Before you begin the installation, inform an appropriate, responsible member of the
site’s staff that you are installing new software on the monitor(s) so they may take
appropriate action.

Do NOT download software while a monitor is connected to a patient.

Record Defaults and Enabled Software Options

1. Use the “Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” on the
second to last page of these instructions and the “Monitor Defaults Worksheet”
from the “Dash 3000/4000 Patient Monitor Operator’s Manual” included in this
upgrade kit to record custom default settings, default monitor settings, and
enabled software options.
NOTE
If the monitor has a built-in writer or access to a network printer, you can
press the GRAPH GO/STOP key to print out the monitor defaults. Use the
“Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” to navigate
to the default menus. Be careful as you scroll through the list of default
settings not to miss any. The lists are long and the monitor only prints the
items as displayed on the monitor screen.

Before you begin recording defaults, obtain a copy of the current Unit Defaults
from clinical or biomedical staff. If this information is not available, use the
factory defaults from the “Dash 3000/4000 Patient Monitor Operator’s
Manual.”

‹ “Appendix D - Factory Defaults - Adult-ICU Mode”

‹ “Appendix E - Factory Defaults - Neonatal-ICU Mode”
‹ “Appendix F - Factory Defaults - Operating Room Mode”

If there are only a few default changes, use the factory default sheets to record
the site’s custom defaults instead of the blank Monitor Defaults Worksheet.

You may want to make additional copies of the “Custom Defaults and Enabled
Software Options Worksheet” and “Monitor Defaults Worksheet” for each
monitor.

2 Dash 3000/4000 Patient Monitor Revision A

2000966-341
You will also use these records to verify defaults after the installation is
complete.

2. Fill out the “Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet”
before you continue to the next step. This worksheet is located at the end of this
document.

Connect the Download Device

Follow the procedure for the installation configuration you will use to perform this
installation.

CAUTION
CONNECT THE EQUIPMENT TO AN AC POWER SOURCE — The
monitor and PC should use a reliable power source during the installation
process. Do NOT use battery power during the install. A battery failure
during the install process may result in an update process failure.

If a failure occurs while any boot code components are loading, full or
partial monitoring capability is lost. The monitor is rendered useless and
requires service by a manufacturer technical support engineer.

PC Download
To connect to a monitor with a PC or PC laptop, follow the procedure below.

CAUTION
EQUIPMENT DAMAGE — Do not perform simultaneous downloads on
monitors networked on the Unity Network. Performing more than one
download at a time could cause an update process failure that damages
your monitor.

1. Connect one end of the Ethernet cable (networked monitors) or crossover cable
(non-networked monitors) to the PC network card.
2. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable or crossover cable.
‹ For networked monitors, connect the Ethernet cable to the Unity Network
(Ethernet) wall tap.
‹ For non-networked monitors, connect the crossover cable to the monitor’s
ETHERNET connector.
3. Power on the PC.
4. Power on the monitor.
5. Continue with the instructions, “Change the IP Address” on page 4.

Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” and “Monitor Defaults”
worksheets. Or, refer to the defaults you printed out. Check the second table column
of the “Custom Defaults and Enabled Software Options Worksheet” for each default
when you complete your verification.

If any custom defaults are different, make the appropriate changes to restore the

For instructions to transfer monitor defaults, refer to the “Dash 3000/4000 Service
Manual.”

Track Software Installations

Use MDOC741, “Software Update Tracking,” on the work order to indicate that this
installation has been performed on each unit. Or, fill out and FAX the “Update
Installation Verification Form” provided at the end of this document.
„ GE Medical Systems Information Technologies Service personnel — Transmit
your billing and tracking information on your open call as you close it.
„ Anyone other than GE Service personnel — Upon completion of this install,
complete an Update Installation Verification Form and return it to the address
on the form.

Return Your PC to its Original Settings

After all the monitor updates are completed, reset your PC to its original settings.
„ Reset your system identification (TCP IP protocol) to the original settings you
recorded. For Windows 2000 systems, see step 4 on page 4. For Window 98/NT
systems, see step 4 on page 5.
„ Go to “Disable Firewall Protection” on page 6 and enable your BlackICE, Cisco
Systems VPN and any other firewall protection programs you disabled by
selecting Start.
