CHAPTER I

Background of the Study

The transition to senior high school (SHS) is a pivotal

period in a young person life, marked by academic pressures,

social adjustment, and the burgeoning quest for independence.

This crucial stage also present a unique set demands of

adolescences, SHS students often find themselves grappling with a

complex interplay of factors that influence their food choices

and dietary patterns.

This exploration delves into the intricate world of eating

habits among SHS students, examining the prevalent issue,

underlying causes, and potential consequences. We will explore

the impact of societal influences, academic pressures, and final

constraints on students dietary choices, shedding light on.

The term eating habit describes the reason and how people

eat which foods they eat, and with whom they obtain, use store or

discard food. A common eating pattern is the three meals per day

(breakfast, lunch, and dinner) with snacks between meals

(Diet,2016). Eating a healthy diet helps the brain by providing


the vitamins and minerals needed to function well. Good eating

habit not only promotes physical well-being but academic health

as well Naillon, 2007. Erickson (2006) submits that skipping

breakfast drains coergy and increases suaking rate while Fisday

(2016) identified various injurious eating habits as food binging

which is eating a large amount of emotions to eat even when not

hungry, eating during other activities like eating during reading

time and eating late at night and eating before going to bed

Paula(2016).

Identified the long term effects of bad eating habits as

regularly eating at night, consuming a lot of fast food, skipping

breakfast eating oversized portions and drinking sugary beverages

all these can contribute, to weight gain that can eventually lead

to obesity putting a lot of health risk on a person.

Eating habits of appropriate, nutrition is one of the most

important factors affecting the proper development of man,

Nutritional status and maintaining good health. Adolescence is a

period of development of school-age youth are the group to the

effects incorrect nutrition. The nutrition during this period

determines physical and emotional development effectiveness in

learning process one has influence on health in adulthood.

The aim of this study to evaluate the habits and nutrition

preferences in secondary school students of age 16-19 years old


and to identifies the differences between their eating behaviors.

Eating habits also known as food habits, encompass a wide range

of factors that influence how why and what people consume.

The habits are shaped by a complex interplay of individual,

social, cultural-religious, economics, environmental, and even

political factors. Influenced by access to energy sources and

cultural norms, the environmental influences on play a role in

shaping a person’s food choice, People eat to survive, but also

to express appreciation faster of belonging, up holt family

costume, and achieve self-realization, eating habits are also

influenced by learned.

Behaviors, including meal and snacks pattern acceptable

foods, food combinations an portion size.

Each establishes its consist of acceptable and unacceptable

foods, regardless of ability. There habits involve over a

person’s life time. Influencing the ever-changing influences that

scope their food choices and behaviors. The objective of this

study is to identify the relationship between students habits

during the school day and socio-demographic, family and physical

activity variables of school as the existence of a school

cafeteria. several studies have been performed that confirm the

significant impact these unhealthy habits have on the population,

there is significant awareness regarding healthy eating habits,


school age is an important time to develop healthy eating and

physical activity habits, which improve the feeling of roll-

being by more successfully developing school activities and

reducing the risk of chronic diseases an increasing number of

structures correlate pour physical performance for indicate

calorie in take, low nutritional quality in their diet.
