Section A – Both SL & HL

1. Two parallel wires A and B are separated by a distance of 1.2cm as shown in the diagram. Both
wires have a length of 80cm and wire A carries a current of 10 A. It is observed that the wires
experience a force of 1.6×10−3N towards each other.

2. The diagram below shows a circuit connected to an iron rod XY. The connecting wires are
flexible. The rod is placed in a magnetic field directed perpendicularly into the page, away from
the observer, as shown.
In what direction will the resultant force act on the rod when the current is switched on in the circuit?

3. A wire of length 0.4m lies in a horizontal magnetic field of magnetic flux density 50μT as shown.
The wire is in the same plane as the paper and makes an angle of 30° with the field.

A current of 0.7 A is passed through the wire. What is the magnitude of the magnetic force acting on the
wire?
4. An electron enters a region of magnetic field with a velocity as shown in the diagram. The path
followed by the electron is shown by the dotted line. What is the direction of the magnetic field
in this region?

5. A proton is traveling at a constant velocity downwards as shown.

Which combinations of directions of electric and magnetic fields could not cause a component of the
proton's deflection to be to the right?

6. Particle A is travelling in a magnetic field with a speed v. Particle A makes an angle of

30° to the field. Particle B is travelling in the same field and makes an angle of 60° to the
field. This is illustrated below.

7. A charged particle travels at a constant horizontal velocity, v inside a region where

crossed electric and magnetic fields are present.

The electric field acts vertically downwards in the same plane as the paper and has an
electric field strength, E. The magnetic field acts out of the page, perpendicular to the
plane of the paper and has magnetic flux density B. Gravitational forces are negligible.
Which of the following is a correct expression for the velocity, v?

8. The diagram shows a cross-sectional view of a current carrying wire. The current direction is out
of the plane of the paper.

(a) Draw the magnetic field lines due to this wire. [2]

A second wire carrying current B is placed near wire A.

The current in wire A is10A, while in wire B is 12A. The length of wire B within the magnetic
field of A is 1m.
(b) (i) Draw an arrow representing the direction of the force F on wire B due to the magnetic
field of wire A. [1]

The magnetic field B of wire A can be found using the following formula

where r is the distance from the wire.

(ii) If the distance between wires A and B is 0.1cm, calculate the magnitude of
the magnetic force on wire B due to the magnetic field of wire A. State an
appropriate unit for your answer. [3]

(c) A third wire CC is placed between wires A and B.

The total force on wire C due to AA and B makes it move to the right as shown.
Determine the direction of the current of wire C. Justify your answer. [2]

ONLY HL students must attempt the questions below

Section B – HL

1. A triangular conducting loop with the dimensions shown moves horizontally to the right
with a constant velocity of 3.0 cm s−1. At t=0 the loop enters a uniform 1.2 T magnetic
field which is directed into the plane of the paper. There are 75 turns of the wire on the
loop.
(a) Define magnetic flux linkage Φ [2]

(b) Calculate the magnetic flux linkage on the loop when the loop is entirely in the
uniform magnetic field. State your answer with the appropriate unit. [3]
