● Define the embedded system

- An embedded system is an autonomous electronic and computer system that

executes a well-defined task in real time. It can also be defined as a specialized
computer system that consists of a computer processor, memory, and input/output
peripheral devices, designed to perform a specific function within a larger electronic
or mechanical system.

● What is the difference between embedded systems and general-purpose computers?

Feature Embedded Computing System General-purpose

Computers

Purpose Tailored for specific, real-time tasks. Intended for a wide range
of applications.

Constraint Power, size, and cost-optimized. Less constrained by power

and size, more focused on
flexibility.

Performance Optimized for real-time performance, Generally priorities raw

often meeting strict timing deadlines. computational power,
which may lead to higher
latency.

User Interface Minimal or specialized interfaces are Complex and adaptable

considered for specific human-machine interfaces
human-machine interactions, supporting various
software and user needs.

● What are the types of embedded systems?

- Real-Time System - has strict timing requirements. They can be divided into hard
real-time systems, where missing a deadline leads to system failure, and soft
real-time systems, where a missed deadline results in reduced quality but not failure.
For example, in avionics control, even a microsecond delay in response can have
severe consequences, so hard real-time systems are used.

- Stand-Alone Systems - Computing systems operate autonomously without relying on

a host computer. They frequently incorporate specialized microcontrollers to perform
tasks like image processing in digital cameras or temperature regulation in smart
thermostats. Unlike networked systems, they operate independently without relying
on external communication, typically using an 8-bit or 16-bit microcontroller platform.

- Network Systems -These computing systems interact with other devices or systems
through wired or wireless connections. They commonly utilize intricate protocols and
interfaces to facilitate smooth integration within a network, such as ATMs using
TCP/IP or IoT devices using MQTT. Specialized hardware like Ethernet controllers or
Wi-Fi modules are essential to provide security, synchronization, and real-time
communication capabilities.

- Mobile Systems - are a specific category of embedded systems designed for

portability and energy efficiency. They make use of low-power microcontrollers, which
often have sleep modes to save energy. These systems are tailored for handheld
devices like smartphones and tablets and typically include features like power
management units (PMUs) and specialized hardware accelerators for tasks like
encryption to improve both performance and battery life.

● What are the components of an embedded system?

- Hardware components of embedded systems:

● Power Supply
● Microcontroller and Microprocessor
● Memory
● Timer and Counter
● Input/Output
● Communication Interface
● Electrical Circuit
● Printed Circuit Board (PCB)
● Resistor
● Capacitor
● Diode
● Transistor
● Integrated Circuit
● Light-emitting diode (LED)
● Inductor

- Software components of embedded systems:

● Text Editor
● Compiler
● Assembler
● Emulator
● Link editor
● Debugger

● Discuss various domains where embedded systems are used:

- Consumer electronics
● Embedded systems are one of the most significant parts of our devices for
functionality. It is the core of every smart device, from smartphones to smart
home appliances. It provides efficiency that defines what modern technology
should offer. With this, it executes specific tasks effortlessly with unparalleled
precision.
- Medical Devices
● Embedded Systems are important in the modern-day medical industry as
they play the role of monitoring vital signs, amplifying sounds in electronic
stethoscopes, and also in every kind of imaging systems such as PET scans,
CT scans, and MRIs, Glucose monitors, pacemakers, CPAP machines, and
variety of biomedical sensors also rely on embedded systems.

- Automotive industry
● In the automotive industry, it can also be called “Automotive Embedded
Systems” which have been used for monitoring and regulating various kinds
of vehicle functions. Examples of this include Electronic Control Units (ECUs)
regulating engine performance, and Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) to
improve the safety of the car. This ensures improved functionality, safety
features, and advanced driver assistance, acting as the nerve-centers of
modern-day vehicles.
