(a) How many ways can the letters in the word SPECIALIST be arranged? [2]

(b) The Melbourne Cup is a handicapped horse race. Assuming the handicapper has done
the job perfectly each horse should have the same chance of winning. There are 24
horses in the Melbourne Cup. Jack is considering placing two types of trifecta bet.
Determine the probability of Jack winning each type of bet.

i. The first type of trifecta bet is one where Jack will pick the first three horses to finish in

ii. The other trifecta is where he picks the first three horses but they can finish in any
order. [2]
