2. What do the equations under Point-slope Form consist of?
3. Do the equations in the Two-point Form column differ from those in the other two
columns?
4. What information is required under each form of equation?

What Is It
You have learned in the previous activity the different forms of the equation of the
line. Let us use these equations in finding the equation of the line.

Equation of the line can be determined if the given are:

1. Two points: (𝑥1, 𝑦1 ) and(𝑥2 , 𝑦2 )

Example: Find the equation of a line that passes

through the points (4,3) and (5, −2) as
shown on the graph.

Solution:

Since two points are given (4, 3) and (5, −2),

then, we will use the Two-point Form defined as,

𝐲𝟐 −𝐲𝟏
𝐲 − 𝐲𝟏 = (𝐱 − 𝐱𝟏)
𝐱𝟐 −𝐱𝟏

Step 1: Identify (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) and (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ) using the given two points (4, 3) and (5, -2).
x1 = 4 and 𝑦1 = 3 ; 𝑥2 = 5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 = −2
𝐲 −𝐲
Step 2: Substitute these values on the formula: 𝐲 − 𝐲𝟏 = 𝟐 𝟏 (𝐱 − 𝐱 𝟏 )
𝐱𝟐 −𝐱𝟏
(−2)−(3)
y−3 = (5)−(4)
(𝑥 − (4))
−5
y−3 = (𝑥 − 4) Simplify
1
−5 −5
𝑦 − 3 = ( ) (𝑥) − ( )(4) Apply Distributive Property
1 1
𝑦 − 3 = −5𝑥 + 20 Simplify
𝑦 − 3 + 3 = −5𝑥 + 20 + 3 Apply Addition Property
𝒚 = −𝟓𝒙 + 𝟐𝟑

4
Thus, the equation of a line that passes through the points (4,3) and (5, −2) is
𝒚 = −𝟓𝒙 + 𝟐𝟑 or 𝟓𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟐𝟑 in standard form.

2. Slope and a point: m and (𝒙𝟏 , 𝒚𝟏 )

Example: Write the equation of a line whose graph

has slope of 2 and a point (3, −5).

Solution: If given a slope and a particular point,

then we will use the Point-slope Form defined as,
𝐲 − 𝐲𝟏 = 𝐦(𝐱 − 𝐱 𝟏 )

Step 1: Identify the slope and a point (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 )

𝑚 = 2; 𝑥1 = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦1 = −5

Step 2: Substitute the given values on the formula: 𝐲 − 𝐲𝟏 = 𝐦(𝐱 − 𝐱 𝟏 )

𝑦 − (−5) = 2( 𝑥 − 3)
𝑦 + 5 = 2(𝑥 − 3) Simplify
𝑦 + 5 = 2𝑥 − 2(3) Apply Distributive Property
𝑦 + 5 = 2𝑥 − 6 Simplify
𝑦 + 5 − 𝟓 = 2𝑥 − 6 − 𝟓 Apply Addition Property
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏𝟏
Thus, the equation of a line whose graph has a slope of 2 and a point (3, −5) is
𝒚 = 𝟐𝒙 − 𝟏𝟏 or −𝟐𝒙 + 𝒚 = −𝟏𝟏 in standard form. Since, we are translating the slope-
intercept form into standard form, “A” should be positive. Multiply both sides by -1 to make the
equation positive. Thus, we have the standard form of 𝟐𝒙 − 𝒚 = 𝟏𝟏.

3. Slope and y-intercept: 𝑚 and 𝑏

Example: Find the equation of a line
whose graph has a slope of 3 and
𝑦-intercept of 2.

Solution: The slope of a line and a

𝑦-intercept are known. Therefore, we will
use the Slope-intercept Form defined as,
𝒚 = 𝒎𝒙 + 𝒃

Step 1. Identify the slope or 𝑚 and 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡 or 𝑏.

𝑚 = 3 and 𝑏 = 2
Step 2. Substitute the given values on the formula: 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏.
𝑦 = (3)𝑥 + (2)
𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐
Thus, the equation of a line whose graph has a slope of 3 and an intercept of 2 is
𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟐 or 𝟑𝒙 − 𝒚 = −𝟐 in standard form.

5
REMEMBER:
To determine the equation of the line:
• If the graph of a linear equation has a slope m and 𝑦 − 𝑖𝑛𝑡𝑒𝑟𝑐𝑒𝑝𝑡 b, then use
the equation 𝑦 = 𝑚𝑥 + 𝑏. This form is called the slope-intercept form.
• If the graph of a linear equation has a slope m and passes through the point
(𝑥1 , 𝑦1) , then use the equation 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 ). This form is called the
point-slope form.
• If the graph of a linear equation passes through the points (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ) and (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ),
𝑦 −𝑦
then use the equation 𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 2 1 (𝑥 − 𝑥1 ). This form is called the two-
𝑥2 −𝑥1
point form.
• The standard form of the equation of the line is 𝐴𝑥 + 𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶, where 𝐴, 𝐵, and
𝐶 are real numbers.

Solution: 𝑥1 = 1 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦1 = 3 ; 𝑥2 = −2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦2 = 6
𝒚 −𝒚
𝒚 − 𝒚𝟏 = 𝟐 𝟏 (𝒙 − 𝒙𝟏 )
𝒙𝟐 −𝒙𝟏
6−3
𝑦−3 = (𝑥 − 1) 𝑦 − 3 = −𝑥 + 1
−2−1
3
𝑦 − 3 = (𝑥 − 1) 𝑦 − 3 + 3 = −𝑥 + 1 + 3

𝑦 − 𝑦1 = 𝑚(𝑥 − 𝑥1 ) 𝑦 − 1 = −5𝑥
𝑦 − 1 = −5(𝑥 − 0) 𝑦 − 1 + 1 = −5𝑥 + 1
𝑦 − 1 = −5(𝑥) − (−5)(0) 𝒚 = −𝟓𝒙 + 𝟏 or 𝟓𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟏

What Is It
Applications of Linear Equation in Two Variables

Let us recall that a solution of an equation in two variables 𝑥 and 𝑦 is an ordered pair
(𝑥, 𝑦) that makes the equation true. To determine whether an ordered pair (𝑥, 𝑦) is a solution
to an equation, we will just substitute the values of 𝑥 and 𝑦 into the equation. On the other
hand, equations in two variables usually have infinitely many solutions.
The processes of solving an equation discussed in the previous modules are very
much helpful in solving problems involving linear equations in two variables. Translating verbal
sentences into mathematical equations is also useful in this module.
There are many real-life situations that exhibit linear equations in two variables.
Below are the steps to solve problems involving linear equations in two variables:

REMEMBER:
• First, read and understand the problem
• Second, translate the problem into an equation in two variables
• Third, find the solution using the formulated equation
• Fourth, check the solution obtained by substituting the solution/s to the original
equations

8
To model these steps, let us recall the problem in Activity 8: It’s Festival Time!

Step 1. Understand the problem.

Given: • They will enclose a 34 m rectangular street
• The length of the street is 11 m.

Asked: The measure of the width of the street if its length is 11 m

Let: x = length of the street

y = width of the street

Step 2. Translate the problem into an equation in two variables.

Note: P = 2L + 2W

Using the information above, we can write the equation:

2x + 2y = 34

Step 3. Find the solution using the formulated equation.

Since x = 11, substitute the value of x to the given equation to solve the value of y.
2x + 2y = 34
2(11) + 2y = 34
22 + 2y = 34
22 + (–22) + 2y = 34 + (–22) By Addition Property of Equality
2𝑦 12
= By Division Property of Equality
2 2
y=6 By simplification

Step 4. Check the solution obtained by substituting the solution/s to the original
equations.
Check your answer:
2x + 2y = 34
2(11) + 2(6) = 34
22 + 12 = 34
34 = 34 True

Therefore, the street is 6 m wide.

To have a deeper understanding of solving problems involving systems of linear

equations in two variables, let’s try to explore the illustrative examples presented below.

Example 1:
Six times the number is 36 less than 10 times the number. Find the number.
Step 1. Let x = be the number
Step 2: 6x = 10x – 36
Step 3. Use the equation obtained in step 2 to solve the problem.
6x = 10x – 36
6x+ (– 10x) = 10x – 36 + (– 10x)
−4𝑥 −36
=
−4 −4
x=9
Step 4: Check answers directly against the facts of the problems. Substitute the
value of x to the equation.

9
6x = 10x – 36
6(9) = 10(9) – 36
54 = 90 – 36
54 = 54 True
Therefore, the number is 9.

Example 2:
The cell phone company charges P399.00 a month and P0.75 per text message. The
bill for the month is P556.50. How many texts (x) were sent?
Step 1.
Let x = the number of texts that were sent
Step 2: 0.75x + 399 = 556.50
Step 3. Use the equation obtained in step 2 to solve the problem.
0.75x + 399 = 556.50
0.75x + 399 + (–399) = 556.50 + (–399)
0.75𝑥 157.50
=
0.75 0.75
X = 210
Step 4: Check answers directly against the facts of the problems. Substitute the
value of x to the equation.
0.75x + 399 = 556.50
0.75(210) + 399 = 556.50
157.50 + 399 = 556.50
556.50 = 556.50 True
Therefore, the number of texts that were sent is 210.

Activity 11: How to count right?) equation in two variables
1. 5𝑥 + 𝑦 = 37 𝑜𝑟 𝑥 + 5𝑦 = 37 Third, I will find the solution using the formulated
equation
2. Finally, I will identify the solution of the linear
Step 1: Let x = number of 1-peso coin equation in two variables by substituting the
y = number of 5-peso coin solution/s to the original equations.
Step 2: x + 5y = 37
Step 3: x = 17, Step 4: x = 17 Step 3
Find the solution using the formulated
x + 5y = 37 y=4
equation
17 + 5y = 37 x + 5y = 37 y = 50x +750 Equation
17+(-17) +5y = 37+(-17) 17 + 5(4) = 37
5𝑦 20 1750 = 50x+750 By substitution
= 17 + 20 = 37
5 5 1750+ = 50x+750 By Addition
y=4 37 = 37

Step 4 1000 = 50x Division Property
Check the solution obtained by
substituting the solution/s to the 50 50 of Equality
original equations 20 = x By simplification
y = 50x +750
1750 = 50(20) +750 Step 2
Translate the problem into an equation
1750 = 100 + 750 in two variables
1750 = 750 Total amount saved=(savings per
week x number of weeks) + initial
Hence, Symeon needs to save for amount of savings
20 weeks 𝑦 = 50(𝑥) + 750
