WHAT IS GENETICALLY
MODIFIED ORGANISM
a plant, animal or microbe in which one or
more changes have been made to the
genome, typically using high-tech genetic
engineering, in an attempt to alter the
characteristics of an organism.

any organism whose genetic material has

been altered using genetic engineering
techniques.

2020 - GMO pink pineapple is available to US
PRODUCTION OF GMO
GM is a technology that involves
inserting DNA into the genome of an
organism. To produce a GM plant, new
DNA is transferred into plant cells.
Usually, the cells are then grown in
tissue culture where they develop into
plants. The seeds produced by these
plants will inherit the new DNA.
STEP BY STEP
PROCESS OF
MAKING GMO
identify
identify what trait they want that plant to have, such as
resistance to drought, herbicides, or insects. Then, they find an
organism (plant, animal, or microorganism) that already has
that trait within its genes.
COPY
After scientists find the gene
with the desired trait, they copy
that gene.
INSERT
Next, scientists use tools to insert
the gene into the DNA of the plant.

This new trait does not change the

other existing traits.
grow

In the laboratory, scientists grow the new plant to ensure it has

adopted the desired trait (insect resistance). If successful, scientists
first grow and monitor the new plant in greenhouses and then in
small field tests before moving it into larger field tests. GMO plants
go through in-depth review and tests before they are ready to be
sold to farmers.
Conclusions
and references
A GMO (genetically modified organism) is an organism
whose DNA has been altered using genetic engineering
techniques to express desired traits. This process typically
involves inserting, deleting, or modifying genes to enhance
characteristics like resistance to pests or improved
nutritional value. Common methods include recombinant
DNA technology and CRISPR gene editing.
