1 Humanities and Art

Humanities Defined (Sanchez, et al, p 3; Zulueta, p. 2; Dudely,

p. v).
Humanities comes from the Latin word "humanus", which means being human,
cultured, or refined. It is a branch of learning concerned with human thought, feelings,
and relations. It deals with the appreciation of human creativity that explores the riches
of human feeling concerning values and others’ values.

Humanities refer to a loosely defined group of cultural subject areas such as arts:
architecture, painting, sculpture, music, dance, theater, and literature. It records man’s
experiences, sentiments, ideals, and goals. And ultimately expresses man’s feelings and
thoughts. It provides enjoyment and stimulation.

In other words, humanities deals with subject areas where human subjectivity is
emphasized and individual expressiveness is dramatized by appreciating,
understanding, interpreting, and evaluating arts. Conversely, Humanities deals not with
the appreciation of architecture alone or literature alone but it’s a study of all the
above-mentioned arts. It deals not with a scientific or objective point of view.
The study of humanities is important in the development of the complete social being.
To be human is to have to show qualities, like rationality, kindness or tenderness, etc.

Rationale for the Study of Humanities

As presented, Humanities is a subject that deals with the appreciation of arts. Here the
students will be taught how to understand the materials, elements, components, and
language of arts. In addition, the students will be asked to apply what they have learned
from class by doing projects and practicums that harness their imagination and
creativity. Eventually, this class training indirectly develops the students’ aesthetic
skills, values, critical thinking, observation, etc. These skills and learning will fill up a
need in oneself that makes him a well-rounded person.

We need a study that will increase our sensitivity. To be sensitive is to perceive with
insight. To be sensitive is also to feel and believe that things make a difference.
Sensitivity involves an awareness of those aspects of values that cannot be measured by
objective standards. We need to mold our values. Values are strictly in the domains of
the humanities because they are strictly relative to us and our condition. They are
clarified and revealed through art appreciation. As we deepen our understanding of arts,
we also deepen our understanding of values, for that is what arts are all about. We will
study our experience with works of art as well as the values that others associate with
those works. By appreciating a certain kind of art, we also educate ourselves about the
nature of our values.

1.2 Introduction to Art

Meaning of Art

The word ‘art’ comes from the ‘arvan’ root ar meaning “join” or “put together.” From
this ancient etymon, two Greek verbs are derived: artizein, meaning “to prepare,” and
arkiskein, “to put together”. The Latin term “ars” means everything that is artificially
made or composed by man.
Art refers to the collective group of fine arts such as visual, performing arts, and
literature. It also connotes the doing of things that have form and beauty. It concerns
itself with the communication of certain ideas and feelings utilizing sensuous medium –
color, sound, bronze, marble, words, film, etc.

Aristotle defines art as the “right reason for making things.” Any kind of
human activity when direct to change or transform things under the
patterns of the right reasons can be called art.

Importance of Art
Art serves as a means of expression developed by man. It preserves the culture, history,
and traditions of mankind. It also satisfies the desires of man as a creative and
imaginative being and provides enjoyment, entertainment, or leisure. Art turns abstract
ideas into reality; as well as turns concrete ideas into abstract ones. And it molds an
individual to a certain degree, according to the person’s perception.

Nature of Art (Zulueta, p. 2)

● Art is ageless. It has been created by people at all times; they live and grow
because they are liked & enjoyed. It involves the personal experience of an
individual accompanied by some intensified emotion.
● Art is made by man. Art is man-made, no matter how close it is to nature.
● Art is a product of experience. Art is the expression of an artist’s thoughts and
feelings, it may be inferred that he belongs to a milieu, and he cannot free
himself from the influence of his social, economic, political, cultural,
geographic, scientific, and technological environment which affects his
creative expressions.
● Art is universal. Art can be enjoyed and understood by anybody. Its subjects
are familiar or common in many parts of the world.
