a new
psychological and social level, called the middle and
late adolescence. You may feel that you are no longer the rapidly growing and awkward
teenager, but you also feel you are not quite ready to call yourself a mature adult
either. As rational beings, you are born with responsibilities that you cannot escape.
And it is fulfilling and rewarding that you grow into a responsible teen and accept
responsibilities whole-heartedly rather than complaining. Especially when you want
to become the best teenager in front of all.
2
Imagine yourself looking into a mirror.
What do you see? Do you see your ideal self
or your actual self? Your actual self or real
self is the one that you actually see. It is
how we think, how we feel, look, and act.
The actual self can be seen by others, but
because we have no way of truly knowing
how others view us, the actual self is our
self-image. It is the self that has
characteristics that you were nurtured or, in some cases, born to have. It is built on
self-knowledge. Selfknowledge is derived from social interactions that provide
insight into how others react to you.

Figure 1. The Self

The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to be. It is an idealized image
that we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced.
The ideal self could include components of what our parents have taught us, what we
admire in others, what our society promotes, and what we think is in our best
interest.

Actual Self Ideal Self

Is who we are Is how we want to be
Is how we feel, think, look, and act Is an idealized image
Is our self-image or what we think about Is what you wish you were really like
ourself
Example: If you believe, and you are aware Example: being strong-willed,
that others see you as a punctual person ambitious/motivated
then punctuality is part of your actual self.

Your awareness of your actual self and ideal self will define your self-concept as a
whole. Self-concept is your knowledge of who you are. Through such self-
awareness, you collect information about yourself, paying attention, and noticing
both internal states and responses and your external behavior. Self-concept is built
from this information and continues to develop as you expand your ideas about who
you are.

There has to be an alignment and congruence between your actual self and your
ideal self. We achieve consistency between these two selves if our thoughts about
our actual self and ideal self are very similar. Lack of alignment will result in mental
distress or anxiety. The greater the level of incongruence between the ideal self and
the real self, the greater the level of resulting distress.

Example :

Your ideal self includes honesty.

Your parents asked you why you came home late from school. You are
honest to tell them that you and your friends went to the mall and had some
chitchats while having milktea. Despite the fact that you might be
reprimanded, you tell the truth and get to feel a sense of mental well -being.
If you are dishonest and tell them that you are one of the cleaners for
the

day, then there is a misalignment or incongruence between your real self and
3
ideal

self. This wil l result in mental distress and anxiety. Lying will result in negative
feelings.

Each person’s self-concept is also influenced by the way we think differently about
ourselves depending on the situation we are in. In some situations, personal
characteristics, such as our skills, abilities, personality, interactions with others, and
their reactions to us will best describe who we are.

Your knowledge of yourself and how you manage yourself directly impacts your
personal effectiveness. Being self-aware, making the most of your strengths, learning
new skills and techniques and behavioral flexibility are all keys to improving your
performance.

PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS

Personal effectiveness means making use of all the personal resources – talents,
skills, e1
. M nergy, and time to enable you to achieve life goals. Our personal effectiveness
depends on our innate characteristics – talent and experience accumulated in the
process of personal development. Talents first are needed to be identified and then
developed to be used in a particular subject area (science, literature, sports, politics,
etc.).
Experience includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of
cognitive and practical activities.
Knowledge is required for setting goals, defining an action plan to achieve them,
and risk assessment.
Skills also determine whether real actions are performed by the plan. If the same
ability is used many times in the same situation, then it becomes a habit that runs
automatically.
Here are some skills that will greatly increase the efficiency of any person who
owns them:
1. Determination - It allows you to focus only on achieving a specific goal
without being distracted by less important things or spontaneous desires. It
may be developed with the help of self-discipline exercise.

2. Self-confidence - It appears in the process of personal development, as a

result of getting aware of yourself, your actions, and their consequences. Self-
confidence is manifested in speech, appearance, dressing, gait, and physical
condition. To develop it, you need to learn yourself, your capabilities, and gain
a positive attitude. Put your best foot forward. Do this every day, and your
self-image will get a healthy boost. And believe that by performing the right
actions and achieving the right goals you will certainly reach success.

4
Figure 2. Some skills for personal
effectiveness.

3. Persistence – It makes you keep moving forward regardless of emerging

obstacles – problems, laziness, bad emotional state, etc. It reduces the costs
of overcoming obstacles. It can also be developed with the help of self-
discipline exercise.

4. Managing stress - It helps combat stress that arises in daily life from the
environment and other people. Stress arises from the uncertainty in an
unknown situation when a lack of information creates the risk of negative
consequences of your actions. It increases efficiency in the actively changing
environment.

5. Problem-solving skills – They help cope with the problems encountered

with a lack of experience. It increases efficiency by adopting new ways of
achieving goals when obtaining a new experience.

6. Creativity - It allows you to find extraordinary ways to carry out a specific

action that no one has tried to use. It can lead to a decrease or an increase in
costs, but usually, the speed of action is greatly increased when using
creative tools.

7. Generating ideas – It helps you achieve goals using new, original,

unconventional ideas. An idea is a mental image of an object formed by the
human mind, which can be changed before being implemented in the real
world.

Big Question:
How can these skills help you build
on
your strengths and work on your
weaknesses?

BUILD ON YOUR STRENGTHS AND WORK ON WEAKNESSES

YOUR

5
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Being
reminded of our weaknesses is unpleasant.
Therefore, we often learn to avoid tasks that
require skills that we think of as weaknesses.
This avoidance can cause problems and hold
you back. For example, if you do not see
yourself as good in communications, you will
likely avoid it. The more you avoid it, the
harder it becomes. When you have avoided
something for a long time, your skills will not
be as good as someone who has regularly
practiced. Therefore, weaknesses can seem
more pronounced over time. You can end up
feeling embarrassed by them. Do something!
Do whatever appropriate remedies to your perceived weakness. Figure 3.
Build on your strengths.

Physical Appreciating one’s looks or appearance
Educational Can keep track of time and obligations
Moral I have integrity and a good reputation.

What other qualities you want to hone

and improve on?

Instead of simply focusing on your weaknesses, recognize your talents and abilities,
build on them, utilize them to your greatest advantage. This is where you can build
your confidence in becoming the best teenager who is responsible and prepared for
adult life.
