The ideal self, on the other hand, is how we want to be. It is an idealized image
that we have developed over time, based on what we have learned and experienced.
The ideal self could include components of what our parents have taught us, what we
admire in others, what our society promotes, and what we think is in our best
interest.
Your awareness of your actual self and ideal self will define your self-concept as a
whole. Self-concept is your knowledge of who you are. Through such self-
awareness, you collect information about yourself, paying attention, and noticing
both internal states and responses and your external behavior. Self-concept is built
from this information and continues to develop as you expand your ideas about who
you are.
There has to be an alignment and congruence between your actual self and your
ideal self. We achieve consistency between these two selves if our thoughts about
our actual self and ideal self are very similar. Lack of alignment will result in mental
distress or anxiety. The greater the level of incongruence between the ideal self and
the real self, the greater the level of resulting distress.
Example :
day, then there is a misalignment or incongruence between your real self and

ideal
self. This wil l result in mental distress and anxiety. Lying will result in negative
feelings.
Each person’s self-concept is also influenced by the way we think differently about
ourselves depending on the situation we are in. In some situations, personal
characteristics, such as our skills, abilities, personality, interactions with others, and
their reactions to us will best describe who we are.
Your knowledge of yourself and how you manage yourself directly impacts your
personal effectiveness. Being self-aware, making the most of your strengths, learning
new skills and techniques and behavioral flexibility are all keys to improving your
performance.
PERSONAL EFFECTIVENESS
Personal effectiveness means making use of all the personal resources – talents,
skills, e1
. M nergy, and time to enable you to achieve life goals. Our personal effectiveness
depends on our innate characteristics – talent and experience accumulated in the
process of personal development. Talents first are needed to be identified and then
developed to be used in a particular subject area (science, literature, sports, politics,
etc.).
Experience includes knowledge and skills that we acquire in the process of
cognitive and practical activities.
Knowledge is required for setting goals, defining an action plan to achieve them,
and risk assessment.
Skills also determine whether real actions are performed by the plan. If the same
ability is used many times in the same situation, then it becomes a habit that runs
automatically.
Here are some skills that will greatly increase the efficiency of any person who
owns them:
1. Determination - It allows you to focus only on achieving a specific goal
without being distracted by less important things or spontaneous desires. It
may be developed with the help of self-discipline exercise.
4
Figure 2. Some skills for personal
effectiveness.
4. Managing stress - It helps combat stress that arises in daily life from the
environment and other people. Stress arises from the uncertainty in an
unknown situation when a lack of information creates the risk of negative
consequences of your actions. It increases efficiency in the actively changing
environment.
Big Question:
How can these skills help you build
on
your strengths and work on your
weaknesses?
5
We all have strengths and weaknesses. Being
reminded of our weaknesses is unpleasant.
Therefore, we often learn to avoid tasks that
require skills that we think of as weaknesses.
This avoidance can cause problems and hold
you back. For example, if you do not see
yourself as good in communications, you will
likely avoid it. The more you avoid it, the
harder it becomes. When you have avoided
something for a long time, your skills will not
be as good as someone who has regularly
practiced. Therefore, weaknesses can seem
more pronounced over time. You can end up
feeling embarrassed by them. Do something!
Do whatever appropriate remedies to your perceived weakness. Figure 3.
Build on your strengths.
Example
Character Honest, Hardworking
Some aspects of
Social Is a good listener
selfconcept where
you can Language Can talk in a persuasive manner that
consider building your can easily get people to accept what I
strengths say.
Physical Appreciating one’s looks or appearance
Educational Can keep track of time and obligations
Moral I have integrity and a good reputation.
Instead of simply focusing on your weaknesses, recognize your talents and abilities,
build on them, utilize them to your greatest advantage. This is where you can build
your confidence in becoming the best teenager who is responsible and prepared for
adult life.
