1. Narrative- a form of poetry that is used to tell a story.


- The oldest form of poetry and one of the oldest form in literature.
- The poet combines elements of storytelling—like plot, setting,
and characters—with elements of poetry, such as form, meter, rhyme,
and poetic devices.
2. Ballad- is a type of poem that tells a story and was traditionally set to
music. English language ballads are typically composed of four-line stanzas
(Quatrain) that follow an ABCB or ABAB rhyme scheme.
3. Limerick- a five-line poem that consists of a single stanza with five
lines, an AABBA rhyme scheme, and whose subject is a short, pithy tale or
description. Most limericks are comedic, some are downright crude, and
nearly all are trivial in nature.
4. Lyric- a short verse with musical qualities that conveys powerful feelings.
- a private expression of emotion by a single speaker.
5. Sonnet- made up of 14 lines in sections that follow a strict rhyme
scheme.
- They follow the rhyme scheme abab cdcd efef gg.
6. Ode- a serious, reflective poem that explores a writer's feelings on a
particular subjects.
7. Elegy- is a work of literature or music written to mourn a loss.
8. Haiku- unrhymed poetic form consisting of 17 syllables arranged in three
lines of 5, 7, and 5 syllables respectively.
9. Free Verse- doesn’t use any strict meter or rhyme scheme. Because it
has no set meter, poems written in free verse can have lines of any length,
from a single word to much longer.
10. Dramatic Poem- a form of poem that is meant to be read or performed
aloud in front of an audience and requires some amount of acting.
11. Formal Poetry- verse that has a specific pattern for the rhythm and
rhyme used in each poem.

12. Performance Poetry- also known as spoken word poetry, is a dynamic
form of artistic expression that combines elements of poetry, storytelling, and
performance. It is meant to be performed live in front of an audience, with
emphasis on vocal delivery, gestures, and body language.

13. Concrete Poem- makes active use of typography, color, spacing, and the
arrangement of words and symbols to create a visual art object.
- it can be viewed as art objects as well as read as poems.
- the visual form is important, but the poem's meaning and content
are still the primary focus.
14. Shape Poem- a poem that takes on the shape of the thing you're writing
about.
- it focuses entirely on the shape: The words are arranged to create
a specific shape, like a heart, a tree, or an animal and the content is
secondary.

15. Tanka Poem- A tanka (“short poem” or “short song”) is a free verse, 31-
syllable poem originating in Japan. The lines have 5,7,5,7, and 7 syllables.
16. Cinquain Poem- five-line poems in which each line has a specific number
of syllables.
- All cinquains follow the same pattern of syllables per line: 2, 4, 6,
8, 2.
17. Name Poem- a type of poem that starts each line with the letters of a
name. A name poem can also be known as an acrostic poem.
18. Diamante/Diamond Poem- is a popular poetic form that is made up of
seven lines. They are formatted into the shape of a diamond and used to
compare two opposites.
- The most popular way that these poems are used is
to compare and contrast the subject matter.

- The subject of the poemis in the first line. It is usually a


noun. It is then followed by two adjectives, then some verbs starting in the
third line (action words), more nouns, verbs, adjectives, and then the
second subject (opposite or antonym).
