Marking Guidelines
1.1.1 Figure 1 – Number Scale

Figure 2 – Bar Scale/Line Scale

1.1.2 C - If the map is resized the scale remains accurate
1.2 This means that every 1 unit on the plan is equivalent to 100 units in real life.
OR:
The map is 100 times smaller than real life.
OR:
Real life is 100 times bigger than on the map.
1.3 Distance (in km) = 15 cm × 3 750 000

= 56 250 000 ÷ 100 000

= 562,5 km
1.4.1 Every unit on a map is equal to 100 unit in reality.
1.4.2 7,3 cm × 100
= 730 cm
= 7,3 m
1.4.3 27 m2 × R149,00
= R 4 023
Scale 2

1.1 The scale of a plan is 1:20

1.1.1 Explain the meaning of the given scale. (2)

1.1.2 If the length of an item on the plan is 185 mm, determine the actual length
of this item in metres (3)

1.2 Katleho went to Mangaung Community Library to study how scales are used in Maps. She
discovered that scales can be represented in different formats as below:

Scale 1 Scale 2
1 : 100
0m 10m 20m

Study the two scale formats above and answer the questions that follow.

1.2.1 Give in order the names of the two scales represented above. (2)

1.2.2 Complete the statement below by choosing the appropriate answer from
the given A-C.

To use scale 1 above, you need to …

A know that 20 m is equivalent to 100 km.

B measure how long one segment of the bar is on your ruler.
C have both types of scales on the map. (2)

1.2.3 Explain the meaning of the scale 1 : 100 (2)

Marking Guidelines
1.1.1 It means that for every 1 unit on the map is equal to 20 units in actual length.
OR
1 mm on the map = 20 mm in reality
1 cm on the map = 20 cm in reality
OR
The map is 20 times smaller than in reality
OR
The reality is 20ntimes bigger than the map
1.1.2 1 mm = 20 mm
Then 185 mm × 20 = 3700 mm

3700 ÷ 1000 = 3,7m

1.2.1 Scale 1 = Bar scale
Scale 2 = Number scale
1.2.2 B
Measure how long one segment of the bar is on your ruler
1.2.3 1 unit on the map/plan is equal to 100 units on the actual ground.

1.2.1 Bar scale / Staafskaal
1.2.2 Bar scales are small graphics that indicate the proportions of a map to the original
geographic area and help users measure distances on maps. While scale can be
indicated as a ratio or in words (i.e. 1:10, or “One inch to ten miles”), scale bars
allow users to measure distances in maps directly.

The measured unit on the bar scale represents the length/distance indicated on the
bar scale, in reality. / Die gemete eenheid op die staafskaal verteenwoordig die
werklike lengte/afstand wat op die staafskaal aangedui word.

Cuisine. (2)

1.4 Describe the route that Abel would travel if he exited the Denmark Hotel at
the Walker Street entrance and intended visiting the Mary Rose restaurant (3)

1.5 Abel walks at a speed of 1.1 m per second.

He commented that it would take him 2 minutes to walk from Denmark Pizza
to Organic Indigo Indian Cuisine.

Verify, showing ALL calculations, whether this comment is valid. (9)

2. Welkom is a town in the Free State. ANNEXURE B is a road map showing part of
the streets in Welkom. The town is known for having many traffic circles.

Use the information in ANNEXURE B to answer the questions that follow.

2.1 Write down the general direction of the Concor circle from the Shell circle. (2)

2.2 A railway line passes through Milner Road, Othello, Arrarat and Koppie Alleen
Streets.

Explain how it is shown on the map that the road is actually situated above the (2)
railway line.

2.3 Name the traffic circle that connects FIVE roads. (2)

2.4 Describe the route that will be taken by a car entering the town on Stateway
from the industrial area if it will be heading to the point in Dagbreek, marked
X, passing by the city council building on the left. (5)

2.5 The actual distance from exiting the Alfa circle to entering the Engen circle is
500 m. The actual distance from exiting circle 13 to entering circle 14 in
Stateway is 1,4 km.
(5)
Determine, by measurement, whether the map is drawn to scale.

2.6 Samuel stated that it took him 5 minutes to cover a distance of 4 km in Welkom.

Verify, with calculation, whether the car was travelling within the speed limit.

You may use the formula:
