b.E2- =sum(b2:d2)
b) Write the formula that is used in column B7 to count all the CAT1 marks greater than 67. [3mks]
 =countif(b2:b5,”>67”)
3. iii) List four ways of categorizing hardware components of a computer. [2mks]
 Input devices, output devices, storage devices, processing unit
4. Explain four ways in which computer s are used in banks. [4mks]
 Used in processing of cheques
 Used in automated teller machines
 Used in electronic money transfer from one account to another.
 To process customer’s transactions
 For security purposes
5. a) What is UPS? [2mks]
 Uninterruptible Power supply-it is an electrical device that can provide stable power supply to the
computer system.
b) State three functions of a UPS. [3mks]
 Regulates the unstable power source to required clean stable voltage
 It temporary provides power to the computer in case of a sudden power failure
 Beeps in case there is power blackout.
c) Name any three types of portable computers. [3mks]
 Lap tops, PDAs, Palm top, Notebook
d) You are required to purchase an operating system .State three factors you should consider before
acquiring the software [3mks]
 hardware configuration
 The type of computer in terms of size and make
 The application software intended for the computer
 User- friendlies
 Documentation available
 Cost of operating system
 Reliability and security provided by the operating system
6) (a) What is an operating system? [2mks]
 Is a suite of programs that manage computer resources.
b) List three classification of an operation system. [3mks]
 Number of users
 Number of tasks
 User interface
7 a)i) What is drop capping? [2mks]
 Refers to a mode of formatting that causes the first letter of the first word of a sentence in a
paragraph to be dropped by a number of lines specified.
ii) Name two types of drop capping. [2mks]
 In margin, dropped
b) Distinguish between the following; [8mks]
i) Text editing and text deleting
 Text editing refers to making necessary changes to an existing document while text deleting refers
to erasing text that is no longer required.
ii) Auto-correct and auto-complete
 Auto-complete is a feature that displays a complete word when the user types the first few
characters of the word while auto-correct is a feature that automatically detects a wrongly spelled
or capitalized and replaces the correct word.
iii) Insert mode and overtype mode
 Insert mode-inserted words or characters pushes the existing text forward, without replacing it
while in type over mode, text typed between the existing words or characters, the new text
automatically replaces the existing text by deleting it.
iv) Copy and move text
 Copy command is used to duplicate text and objects while move command is used to change the
position of text or object in a document.
c) State three types of paragraph formatting features. [3mks]
 Line spacing, tab setting, text alignment, change case, indents, drop caps
8. Give two reasons why primary storage devices are not used for secondary storage. (2mks)
 They are more expensive
 They hold less volume of data
 They are volatile hence cannot store information once the power is off.
9. Describe four main peripheral devices of a computer [4mks]
 Printer - hardcopy output devices
 Monitor – the part that displays output and helps the user monitor what is going on in a computer.
 Keyboard – it allows the user to enter data and instructions to the computer by pressing its keys.
 Mouse – a pointing device that allows a user to execute commands. It controls a pointer on the
screen.
10. State the effect on cursor and text when the following keys are pressed in a word processor.(4mks)
 Caps lock key to change from lowercase to uppercase and vice versa
 Enter (Return) Key-pressing this key forces the cursor to move to the beginning of the next line.
 Space bar key - create space between words during typing.
 Backspace key-the key erases characters to the left of the cursor.
11. Explain the three parts of a task bar. (3mks)
 Start button-this is on the extreme left end with a word start together with a
 Microsoft logo-It is used to access programs as well as shut down the computer.
 Task Manager-this is the middle part of the bar which displays any task / program that is running
 System tray-this is the right most part which bears the system clock
12. Differentiate between partitioning and formatting as used in disk management. (4mks)
 Partitioning is dividing hard drive into logical portions or sections for specific arrangement of
data. For example, one partition for installing operating system and another for user’s data. Il
logically groups a part of memory in the disk to create address table for files to be stored.
 Formatting, is preparing a disk in order for it to accept data storage, by arranging its tracks and
sectors.
13.What will happen when the following combinations of keys are pressed? (2mks)
 CTRL+ESC-display the start menu
 (ii) CTRL -P-display the prim dialog box
 (iii)CTRL - N-opens a blank document
 (iv)C'TRL -D-opens a font dialog box
14. State TWO reasons why secondary storage is preferred to main memory in data storage. (2mks)
 High data storage capacity: It is often necessary to store many millions, sometimes billions and
even trillions of bytes of data in a computer. Unfortunately, the storage capacity of the primary
storage is not sufficient to store large volumes of data which needs to be handled by most data
processing centers/systems.
 Non-volatility: Data in it is lost when power is turned off or interrupted. However, computer
systems need to store data on a permanent basis for several days, months or even several years.
15. a) Differentiate between embedded computer and dedicated computer. (2mrks)
 •Embedded computers are special purpose computer used inside another device and usually
dedicated to specific functions.
 •Dedicated computer is a general purpose computer designed to perform a specific task.

(b) State four differences between a CRT and a TFT screen. [4mks]
 CRT monitors  TFT screen

 It is bell shaped  It is screen flat shaped

 Has poor resolution  Has high resolution

 Heavier, hence less portable  Light hence more portable

 Occupies more space  Occupies less space

 Cheaper  Expensive

 Produces a high amount of radiation  Produces a low amount of radiation

 Consumes more power  Consumes less power

16. Mr. Robert a German teacher used speech method to store students' oral answers exam into a computer.
(a)What is a speech input? (2mks)
 It is a type of input where a microphone connected to a computer system is used to enter d in form
of spoken words into the computer
(b) State three disadvantages of using this method of data input. (4mks)
 Voice input is complex to develop
 Voice input does not take care speech related problems such as accents, tone etc
 The response rates of speech input devices are relatively slow
 Most speech input devices can recognize a limited, standard vocabulary of spoken words. and the
voice of only one speaker
 Cannot differentiate words that have same sounds (homophones)
17 (a) what is a Drive? (2mks)
 A drive is a computer device for reading data from or writing data into a storage media, e.g. tape
or disk
(b) State any four types of computer drives, giving an example of a storage device used by each.(4mks)
 -Hard disk drive (HDD)
 Floppy Disk drive (FDD)
 CD- ROM drive
 -DVD - ROM drive
 -Tape drive
 Zip a Zip drive
 -USB port-for flash disk
18. Name any four physical measures taken to protect a computer lab from unauthorized access. (4mks)
 -Burglar proofing the room
 -Use of alarms
 -Use of padlocks
 -Use of special cards
 -Employing security guards

19. List any four likely causes of data and program loss in a computer system? (4mks)
 -Viruses
 -Hardware fault
 -Theft
 -Network breakdown.
