Introduction:

Plant nutrition plays a crucial role in the health and sustainability of our environment. It
impacts everything from the air we breathe to the water we drink and the food we eat. This
introduction explores the multifaceted impact of plant nutrition on the environment,
encompassing its influence on resource utilization, climate change, biodiversity, and soil
health.
Objectives:

At the end of the exercise, the students will be able to understand and identify
the impact of plant nutrition in the environment.

Discuss the following (include graph, photo etc.)


1. Give and discuss five (5) practices for effective soil nutrient management.
 Assess nutrients need in plants and soils
Soil is a major source of nutrients needed by plants for growth. The three
main nutrients are nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Together
they make up the trio known as NPK. Other important nutrients are calcium,
magnesium and sulfur.

 Maintain a balanced soil pH and include crop rotation


The most common practice is to add a material that contains lime, however
other methods such as using baking soda or eggshells will also increase the
pH in soil

 Promote nutrient recycling


lead to maximal resource utilization, efficiency, and productivity per areal
unit among the communities within the lentic water ecosystem

 Avoid soil compaction and reduce tillage


Heavy equipment and tillage implements amplify damage to the soil's
structure, decreasing pore space and limiting soil and water volume even
further.

 Protect soil biodiversity and enhance extension services

2. What are the effects of fertilization practices on soil health, water quality, and
biodiversity?

Soil Health
Imbalanced use of chemical fertilizers can alter soil pH, and increase pests
attack, acidification, and soil crust, which results in a decrease in soil organic
carbon and useful organisms, stunting plant growth and yield, and even leading to
the emission of greenhouse gases
Water Quality
One of the most important negative effects of intensive fertilizer use is water
eutrophication in which there is increased amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous
compounds in water resulting increase in the amount of higher aquatic plants and
algae formation and degradation of water quality and water environment
Biodiversity
Fertilization alters soil fertility, thus affecting weed density, nutrient uptake, and
biomass yield, which in turn affects species composition and biodiversity

3. Provide and discuss five (5) sustainable agricultural practices that benefit both the
crop yields and the environment.
 Crop rotation- Crop rotation helps break pest and disease cycles, while organic
farming fosters a biologically active and nutrient-rich soil.
 Organic farming- Organically grown" food is food grown and processed using no
synthetic fertilizers or pesticides.
 No till farming- No-till farming prevents soil erosion, maintains soil structure, and
reduces soil compaction, which can inhibit plant root growth.
 Cover cropping- cover crops are plants that are planted to cover the soil rather than
for the purpose of being harvested. Cover crops manage soil erosion, soil fertility,
soil quality, water, weeds, pests, diseases, biodiversity and wildlife in an
agroecosystem—an ecological system managed and shaped by humans.
 Alley cropping- Alley Cropping can diversify farm income, increase crop production,
improve landscape aesthetics, enhance wildlife habitat and provide protection and
conservation benefits to crops.
