Math 241: HW Set B Week 1

Carefully print your name and NetID in the fields below.

(NOT your UIN, your NetID. This is the part before @illinois.edu in your email.)

First Name Last Name NetID

There are 3 problems worth 5 points each, for a total of 15 points.

• You are allowed to collaborate with your classmates, but you must write and submit your
own solutions.

• Late homework will not be accepted.

• If you print this HW sheet, then use the space provided under each question.

• If you are writing this on your own paper, then use one page per question.

• Don’t use a tablet.

• Use a dark pencil or black pen. Your work must be legible when it is photographed/scanned.

• You are required to show your work on each problem. All problems require demonstrated
work supporting your answer and/or a brief justification (as appropriate).

• Organize your work in a reasonably neat and coherent way. All work for a particular question
should be kept together and in order.

• The general grading rubric for each homework question is as follows:

– Effort: 4 points This must be a demonstrated substantial attempt that makes reasonable
sense even if it turns out to be the wrong approach. If a problem has multiple parts, and
you only attempt part of it, then you may only get a fraction of the effort points.
– Correct approach: 1/2 point. If the approach is correct, you get an additional 1/2
point. You will still get this 1/2 point if you make some mistakes.
– Final answer: 1/2 point. If you have the right approach and you get everything correct,
you get an additional 1/2 point.

As you can see, the bulk of the grade is on making a meaningful effort to obtain a correct
answer - not on the final answer itself. Essentially, if on each problem, you make a reasonable
attempt but your work is wrong, you could still get 12/15 (a B-) on the homework.

The purpose of the homework is to help you learn the material. Start early, ask questions.
1. (5 points) For each case below, indicate whether the dot product u · v is positive, negative, or
zero. Give a brief justification for your answer in each case.

2. (5 points) Give a parametrization of the curve that is both on the ellipsoid:

x2 y 2 z 2
+ + =1
4 2 16
and on the plane y = 1. Pick your parametrization√ so that the curve moves in the orien-
tation shown below and starts at the point (0, 1, 8). Briefly explain how you obtained this
parametrization.

r(t) = x(t), y(t), z(t) = , , with ≤t≤

IMPORTANT: Specify both the components x(t), y(t), z(t) and the interval for t

3. (5 points) Consider the smooth parametrized space curve below. Assume the conditions on the
parametrization are such that you can compute the Frenet TNB frame.

Answer the questions below and briefly justify your answers.

(a) What is the sign of T · u?
(Here T is the unit tangent vector at a and u is tangent to the curve opposite the motion.)

(b) What is the sign of N · v?

(Here N is the principal unit normal vector at b and v points somewhat towards the z-axis
as shown.)

(c) What is the sign of B · w?

(Here B is the binormal vector at b and w points downwards.)
