For items 46-50, analyze the parts and contents of an introduction section below. Note: The paragraphs are
not in proper order.
INTRODUCTION
(1) Exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is harmful. UV radiation is mutagenic (D’ Orazio, Jarrett,
Amaro-Ortiz & Scott, 2013) particularly UV-A which degrades DNA (Cesarini, n.d.) causing mutations. UV
radiation also causes “melanoma skin cancer, premature ageing, and immune system suppression”
(United States Environmental Protection Agency, 2010), and cataracts (Case Western Reserve
University, n.d.). Still, the best protections against the harmful UV radiation coming from the sun are
clothes that are treated with dyes with UV protective property. Most of these dyes are synthetic in
nature.
(2) The aims of the study are to determine the UV protective ability of different color shades of
Annatto (Bixa arellana) natural dye, specifically; Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) and Color Fastness
to Washing.
(3) Hydrogen (H) bonds in dye molecules absorb harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun (Gogoi &
Gogoi, 2016). Using Annatto seeds’ dye into the cotton fabric will increase the ultraviolet protection
factor of the fabric.
(4) Skin is the first line of defense of the human body against the environmental pressures
particularly ultraviolet (UV) radiation. However, due to the depletion of the large parts of the ozone
layer, Earth becomes inefficient in blocking the harmful UV radiation from the sun. UV radiation such as
UVA and UVB are very harmful to living organisms (Sivasakthivel & Reddy, 2011). Human skins have
various tolerances from the damages that result from exposure to UV. Most prone to this kind of
damage are people with “white to fair skin complexions” and they are also the ones who are prone to
“skin cancer” (D’ Orazio, Jarrett, Amaro-Ortiz & Scott, 2013).
