Problem 1

• A stone weighs 105 lb in air. When submerged in water, it


weighs 67 lb. find the volume and specific gravity of the
stone.
Problem 2
• A concrete cube 0.5m on each side is to be held in
equilibrium under water by attaching a light foam buoy to it.
What minimum volume of foam is required? The specific
weights of concrete and foam are 23.58 kN/m^3 and 0.79
kN/m^3 respectively.

0.90m. The weight of the tank is 3500 N. The tank is acted by an
unbalanced force of 12000 N parallel to a pair of sides.
• Determine the acceleration of the tank.
• Determine the maximum pressure at the bottom of the tank
• Determine the force acting on the side with the greatest depth.

the top.

direction of its length? (b) What is the maximum hydrostatic force
acting on the side opposite the direction of the acceleration. (c)
Determine the volume of the remaining water at the tank.

• The container shown has a width of 500 mm and contains water to a
depth of 300mm. (a) At what angle will the water surface makes with
the horizontal when the tank is accelerated tot the right so that the
water will just touch point A. (b) Determine the acceleration right at
this instant. (c) What is the maximum pressure at point B of the tank
at this instant

• An open cylindrical tank having a radius of 0.30 m and a height of
1.20m is filled with a water at a depth of 0.90m (a) how fast will it be
rotated about its vertical axis if half of its volume is spilled out? (b)
How fast will it be rotated about its vertical axis so that no water will
be spilled out? (c) How fast will it be rotated about its vertical axis so
as to produce zero pressure with 0.20m from the center of the tank?
