LESSON DEVELOPMENT

BLOCK 1
New Schools of thought

Liberals: They mainly wanted a nation which tolerated all religions. They
argued for an elected parliamentary government, subject to laws interpreted
by a well-trained judiciary that was independent.

Radicals; The idea of non- existence of private property and concentration of

property in the hands of a few was disliked by them.

Conservatives: They respected the past and resisted change. But soon after
the revolution began to accept the changes.

Industries and Social Change; This was a period of economic and social
change. Men, women and children were pushed into factories on low wages.
Whereas, liberals and radicals who were factory owners considered the that
workers efforts must be encouraged.

Socialism in Europe: Socialists were against the idea of private property. They
had different visions of the future. Some demanded that governments must
encourage cooperatives. Marx believed that a socialist society would free the
workers from capitalism.

Socialism given support: To fight for better living conditions, workers in

Germany and England began forming associations. They set up funds for
members in distress, reduction of working hours and right to vote.
Social ,economic and political conditions in Russia before 1905.
During the beginning of the 20th century, about 85% of the Russian population
were agriculturalists.

Russia was the major exporter of grains

Most of the industrialists were run by the private industrialists. There was no
limit on working hours and even minimum wages were not given.

Russia was ruled by a Tsar and was an autocracy.

Tsar Nicholas II was a self -willed, oppressive and a corrupt ruler.

The working conditions of the workers and peasants deteriorated.

Peasants frequently refused to pay rent and even murdered landlords.

Inspired by the western European countries, the Russians demanded a
responsible government but their demands were turned down. So it led to a
talk about revolutions.

The liberals campaigned to end this state of affairs.

It led to the foundation of the Russian Social democratic Workers Party in 1898
by the socialists who followed Marx’s ideas.

In 1903 ,this party was divided into two groups-Mensheviks and Bolsheviks.

Bolsheviks was a political organisation led by Lenin, who thought that in a

repressive society like Tsarist Russia, the party should be disciplined and
should control the number and quality of its members.

Mensheviks was a political organisation who thought that party should be

open to all and accept the democratic set up of the government.
Block 2
Lesson Development
The Socialist System

Were against political party

Property provided employment, it gave personal gains to property owners, not
to the ones who contributed to make the property productive.
Socialists wanted that landowners should pay to collective interest ,rather
than their own personal interests.

Socialist parties formed in different parts of the world

In Germany, workers associations worked closely with the Social Democratic

Party and helped it win the parliament seats. Labour Party in Britain and
Socialist Party were formed in France.

Difference between Social Democrats and Socialist Revolutionaries

Social democrats believed workers to be the main force of revolution whereas
socialist revolutionaries argued that peasants would be the revolutionary
class.

The first group wanted benefits for the workers and control on the factors of
production whereas the other group demanded land to the peasants.

Social democrats felt that peasants were not a united group as they were rich
and poor and many owned large tracts of land.Socialist Revolutionaries
favoured peasants as natural socialists.
