Project Proposal

R/JEILANI CENTRAL COLLEGE

(NATIONAL SCHOOL)
BALANGODA
 The students' reading levels are low or insufficient.
 Lack of interest in reading is a major reason for this, with 97% of students
showing no interest in reading books.
 Parents and society may not understand the importance of reading,
which could discourage students further.
 The school library and public libraries in the area are not being used
effectively, leading to a lack of access to reading material.
 A book reading system has been introduced among bilingual students
from Grade 6 to 10 to potentially improve their reading skills.
 However, this system may not reach all students or be effective for those
who are not motivated to read.
 Internet and social media addiction among children is also contributing to
the decrease in reading.
 In summary, low motivation, limited access to reading material, and
alternative mediums are the main factors contributing to the students'
low reading levels.
 To foster a love for reading story books among students
in grades 6-10.
 To develop and improve students' comprehension skills when
reading story books.
 To enhance students' vocabulary and language skills through
reading and discussing story books.
 To introduce students to a variety of story genres and authors, and
encourage them to explore different types of story books.
 To help students develop critical thinking and analysis skills by
engaging with the characters, themes, and plots in story books.
 To promote reading story books as a form of entertainment and
relaxation, and encourage students to read for pleasure.
 To develop a reading culture around story books within the school
community and encourage students to share their reading
experiences with others.
 To improve academic performance by helping students improve
their comprehension, concentration, and memory skills through
reading story books.
 To encourage students to become lifelong learners and avid readers
of story books, by providing them with access to a wide range of
story books and resources.
 To foster creativity and imagination, by encouraging students to
engage with the stories and characters they encounter in the story
books they read.
 Our project 'Make Every Child a Reader' aims to promote reading skills among students
in Grades 6 to 10 by encouraging them to read storybooks of their choice.
 Students will submit their book reading records to a WhatsApp group and keep a
record book containing information about all the books they read.
 The reading records will be verified by the teacher in-charge, class teacher, or sectional
head, and parents will confirm their child's progress.
 "Once a week, students will be asked to summarize the story of a book they have read
in 70 to 100 words and present it in the classroom."
 Efforts of the students will be recognized through certificates and awards, such as
most books read, best story summarizer, and best storyteller.
 The project aims to create a community of readers, encourage exploration of genres
and authors, and foster a lifelong love of reading.

(genres = different categories or types of literature, such as mystery, romance, science

fiction, fantasy, historical fiction, biographies, etc)

Communication and management:

guidelines and instructions on how to use the groups to monitor reading records, promote
reading, and facilitate follow-up and engagement.

Promotion and encouragement:

Encouraging students to read story books and share the titles and authors of the books they
have read, and providing resources and recommendations for students to find new story
books to read.

Monitoring and evaluation:

Tracking students' progress and participation in the project, and providing regular follow-up
and engagement to keep students motivated and interested.

Creating a culture of reading:

Fostering a culture of reading around story books within the school community, and
encouraging parents and family members to support their children's reading habits.

Resource management:
Providing access to digital resources for students, including e-books and reading lists, and
helping students find and access physical resources, such as public libraries and bookstores.

Data management:
Collecting and managing data related to students' reading records, such as book titles and
authors, and using this data to evaluate the project's effectiveness and impact.

Outreach and communication:

Promoting the project to school administration, teachers, parents, and the wider
community, and communicating the benefits and outcomes of the project to these
stakeholders.

Continuous improvement:
Reviewing and updating the project's goals, methods, and outcomes on a regular basis, and
making adjustments as necessary to ensure that the project continues to meet the needs
and interests of students.

The use of WhatsApp as a communication and engagement tool is a significant advantage

of this project. The platform is widely used by students and provides a convenient way to
monitor and follow up on reading records, provide resources and recommendations, and
engage with students on a regular basis. The use of WhatsApp will help to create a sense of
community around reading and foster a love for books and reading among students.
