NETWORKING
THE ETHERNET
Group 1
ETHERNET
-developed by Xerox in the 1970s
-system of connections in which
devices are connected within a LAN
or a WAN -a system that connects a number of
computer systems to form a local area
network, with protocols to control the
passing of information and to avoid
simultaneous transmission by two or
more systems.
How does it work? The ethernet connection is
done via a central device and
connects multiple computers
via ethernet cables. (Cat5,
Cat6)

TYPES OF ETHERNET NETWORK
1. Ethernet (10BASE-T): 4. 10 Gigabit Ethernet (10GBASE-T):
- Speed: 10 Mbps - Speed: 10 Gbps
- Media: Twisted pair cables (Cat3) - Media: Twisted pair cables (Cat6a or Cat7)
- Distance: Up to 100 meters - Distance: Up to 100 meters (Cat6a) or longer with fiber
- Use: Legacy networks, mostly phased out. optics
- Use: Data centers and high-performance computing.
2. Fast Ethernet (100BASE-T):
- Speed: 100 Mbps 5. Fiber Optic Ethernet (e.g., 100BASE-FX, 1000BASE-LX):
- Media: Twisted pair cables (Cat5 or higher) - Speed: Varies (from 100 Mbps to 10 Gbps and beyond)
- Distance: Up to 100 meters - Media: Fiber optic cables
- Use: Common in small to medium-sized networks. - Distance: Can exceed several kilometers
- Use: Backbone networks, long-distance connections.
3. Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-T):
- Speed: 1 Gbps1o 6. Power over Ethernet (PoE):
- Media: Twisted pair cables (Cat5e or Cat6) - Speed: Varies (typically 10/100/1000 Mbps)
- Distance: Up to 100 meters - Media: Twisted pair cables (Cat5e or higher)
- Use: Increasingly popular in modern LANs. - Use: Supplies power to devices (like IP cameras, phones)
along with data.
Advantage of ethernet
provides a wide range of speeds, from 10 Mbps to
100 Gbps, allowing for high-bandwidth activities such
as video streaming
