Mathematics Assignment – SS2

Chapter : Continuity & Differentiability
Date of Uploading : 29/4/2024 Date of Submission : 14/5/2024

SOME IMPORTANT POINTS :

1. Continuous function : A function is said to be continuous if it is continuous at each point of its domain.
2. Everywhere continuous function : A function is said to be everywhere continuous if it is continuous for all
real numbers.
3. Graphical meaning of continuity : Continuous function means there is no break in the graph of the function
i.e., we can plot the graph of the continuous function without lifting the pen. A function is discontinuous at a
point means there is some kind of break in the graph at that point.
4. Continuity at a point : A function f(x) is said to be continuous at a point x = a if lim f(x) = f(a) where both
xa
(limit and value) are existing.
5. Removable Discontinuity : If lim f(x) ≠ f(a) and both are existing, then discontinuity is said to be removable
xa
discontinuity because the function can be made continuous by redefining it at x = a in such a way that limit
becomes equal to the value of the function.
6. Irremovable discontinuity of first kind : It is a kind of discontinuity in which RHL and LHL both are defined
but they are not equal.
7. Irremovable discontinuity of second kind : It is a type of discontinuity in which at least one of RHL and LHL is
not existing.
8. Continuity from Left : A function is said to be left continuous or continuous from the left at x = a if
lim f(x) = f(a), where both are existing.
xa
9. Continuity from Right : A function is said to be right continuous or continuous from the right at x = a if
lim f(x) = f(a), where both are existing.
xa
10. Polynomial functions, sinx, cosx, ex and |x| are everywhere continuous functions.
11. If f(x) and g(x) are continuous functions in their common domain D, then
a. f(x) + g(x) is a continuous function on D,
b. f(x) – g(x) is a continuous function on D,
c. f(x).g(x) is a continuous function on D,
d. a f(x) is a continuous function on D, where a is a constant, and,
e. f(x) / g(x) is a continuous function on D provided g(x) ≠ 0.
12. Continuity of Composite Functions : Let f(x) and g(x) be real functions such that fog is defined. fog is said to
be continuous at x = a if g(x) is continuous at x = a and f(x) is continuous at x = g(a).
13. Continuity on an open interval : f(x) is said to be continuous on (a, b) iff it is continuous at each point of the
interval (a, b).
14. Continuity on a closed interval : f(x) is said to be continuous on [a, b] if it is (i) continuous on (a, b), (ii) right
continuous at x = a, and, (iii) left continuous at x = b.
15. Differentiability at a point :
(i) Derivative at a point is the slope of tangent to the curve at that point. Right hand derivative is the slope of
tangent to the curve at that point drawn from right hand side of that point. Left hand derivative is the slope
of tangent to the curve at that point drawn from left hand side of that point. A function is not differentiable
at a point means these two derivatives are different i.e., slopes of these two tangents are different which is
possible only when there are two different tangents at that point. Therefore, a function is said to be not
differentiable at a point if two tangents can be drawn at that point. That means a function is not
differentiable at a point if we can draw two tangents at that point. In some cases it occurs at a point where
there is sharp corner.

(ii) Continuity is necessary condition of differentiability. Means all differentiable functions are necessarily
continuous but continuous functions are not necessarily differentiable. For example |x| is continuous
function but is not differentiable.
16. Differentiability on (a, b) : Function is said to be differentiable on (a, b) if it is differentiable at each point of
this interval.
17. Differentiability on [a, b] : Function is said to be differentiable on [a, b] if it is differentiable on (i) (a, b), (ii)
right hand derivative exists at a, and, (iii) left hand derivative exists at b.
18. Polynomial functions, sinx, cosx and ex are everywhere differentiable. |f(x)| is not differentiable at points
where f(x) = 0.
