Activity 3
Instructions: Read the text that follows and copy the highlighted parts in
your notebook.
Delivering a speech is never an easy task; mastery requires
constant practice. Just remember that in speeches, intonation, dramatic
pauses, and emphasis are essential to make an impact on people. Instead
of speaking in monotone, consider using vocal techniques. To do this, you
must review the speech carefully.
1. Consider the parts where lines could be delivered using a normal,
faster, or slower rate. Usually, if emphasis is to be given, the slower rate
of speech is to be taken.
2. Think about the required emotion and emphasis on certain parts
of the speech. The beginning and the end are both essentially crucial so
they should be handled at the speaker’s best. Check the guidelines and
the rubric for delivering a memorized speech that follows:
How to Improve Delivery
1. Avoid bad vocal habits. Watch for these problems as you
practice.
• Do you used vocalized pauses (e.g., “uh,” “um,” “Ok,” like,”
etc.)?
• Do you use unusual tone? (e.g., saying every sentence? Or
phrase? As if it were a question?)
2. Make eye contact with the individuals in your audience as
you speak. You can look down your notes but not too long.
2
3. Be animated or lively.
• Move around your space as you speak but maintain good
posture. This helps to control nervousness and makes the
speech more interesting to your audience.
• Gesture with your hands and arms to add emphasis to your
speech.
• Avoid distracting mannerisms and movements, such as
playing with your hair or clothes or swaying your body.
Components of a speech:
1. Introduction: The introduction of your speech establishes your speech’s
purpose, previews your key points and tells your audience why they should
listen.
Your introduction should immediately capture your audience’s attention
and interest.
Your introduction should give your audience a preview of what they can
expect to hear for the duration of your speech.
When preparing your speech, it’s actually easier to write your introduction
last, after you have written the rest of your speech.
Your introduction must:
a. Set the tone of your speech
b. Capture your audience’s attention
c. State your purpose
d. Outline your agenda
2. Body: The body of your speech is the point at which you go into full detail
about each of your points. The body is where you tell your story.
Important key points to remember:
Organize your thoughts into a cohesive, logical, flow of ideas.
Each main point of your speech should support your speech’s
purpose.
Use a variety of examples to illustrate the main points of your
speech, from research, facts and figures, to personal anecdotes and
references.
Don’t be afraid to let your personally come through; know your
audience and tailor your approach accordingly. The body of your
speech should be creative and engaging.
3. Conclusion: The conclusion of your speech summarizes your purpose and
main points while leaving a lasting impression with your audience.
Some important key points to remember:
Use your conclusion as an opportunity to summarize the main
points of your speech.
3
Don’t repeat your main points word for word; rather, paraphrase the
key themes and arguments you have just presented.
Consider ending your speech with an additional anecdote or
quotation that captures the theme of your speech.
Don’t introduce any new points or supportive evidence into your
conclusion as it will confuse your audience.
Write your conclusion at the same time as the introduction (after
you write the body) so that the introduction and conclusion
complement one another.
In developing a speech, there will be different types of transitions used
such as temporal, equality, causality, compare and contrast, and introduction
and summaries.
Activity 4
Instructions: Write a brief speech on the steps to combat your feeling of
anxiety or nervousness. Once done with your speech, read it in front of
your family or friends. Your speech is rated according to its content,
organization, and conventions. (10 points)
