Name of the Experiment

Introduction to ADS and

Designing an Rectangular Patch Antenna

Course No : ETE 308

Course Title : Microwave and Antenna Engineering Sessional
Date of Experiment : 22/04/2024
Date of Submission : 13/05/2024

RE MARK S

Name :
Roll no :
Level :L-3
Term :T-I
2

Objectives:
 To simulate a rectangular patch antenna in ADS to achieve impedance matching.
 To fabricate and test the antenna prototype, validating its performance in radiation pattern and
efficiency.
 To explore parameter variations to optimize antenna characteristics, focusing on impedance
matching and radiation properties.

Used Software:
Advanced Design System-ADS 2017
3

Procedure :
Step 1: Design Layout
i. Open the software ADS-2017
ii. Select Above Toolbar: File  New cell [Rename as you wish] Create Layout.
iii. Choose Layout Technology as “Standard ADS Layers 0.0001 millimeter layout resolution.
iv. Drag and drop a Rectangular Shape from the Toolbar at the Layout and by default, it is set as
cond1.
v. Set the parameter
Conductor 1
Lower Left X -5
Lower Left Y -5
Width 10
Height 10
vi. Similarly, Drag and Drop another Rectangular Shape by default it is set as cond2.
vii. Set the parameters as

Conductor 2
Lower Left X -10
Lower Left Y -10
Width 20
Height 20

viii. Select v,s deil:drawing from the Toolbar and Drag and drop another rectangular shape and select
the parameters as same as same as Conductor 2.
ix. Select Pin icon From the Toolbar and by default it is renamed as pin1.
x. In the properties pan on the right side of the window set the impedance as 200 Ω.

Step 2: Substrate Selection

i. Select “Substrate editor” from the toolbar. New Substrate workspace window would appear.
ii. Select File  New  Create Substrate. A 2 dimensional Rectangular antenna schematic diagram
will appear
iii. Set the upper and Lower Layer above and below the conductors as AIR and The Substrate Teflon
(2.15) between the conductors. Then close the Tab.

Step 3 : Simulation
i. Select “EM Simulation Setting” from the toolbar. New EM setup window would appear.
ii. Select Frequency plan and set initial frequency Fstart to 8GHz and Npts as 50 then click
Simulate.
iii. After The Simulation Two graphs appear , One is for Magnitude vs Frequency and the other is for
Phase vs Frequency.
iv. Click “Smith Chart” at the bottom of the graph window To view the parameters in Smith Chart.
