Question 1. Determine the internal normal force


between lettered points on the bar. Draw all

Question 11. The concrete post (Ec = 25 Gpa and αc = 9.9 x 10-6/0C ) shown in figure is reinforced
with six steel bars, each of 22 mm diameter (Es = 200 Gpa and αc = 11.7 x 10-6/0C). Determine the
normal stresses induced in the steel and in the concrete by a temperature rise of 350C. Ans.𝝈𝒔 =

Question 12. A steel tube 30mm internal diameter, 2.5mm thick and 4000mm long, is covered and
lined throughout with copper tubes 2mm thick. The three tubes are firmly joined together at their
ends. The compound tube is then raised in temperature by 100oC. Find the stresses in the steel and
copper. Assume E=200kN/mm2 for steel and E=110kN/mm2 for copper; the coefficients of linear
expansion of steel and copper are 1.2 x 10-5 per oC and 1.9 x 10-5 per oC, respectively. Ans.𝝈𝑠 =
